Matching Wits On burning trash |
Umbra Fisk |
08 Jan 2007 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, We recycle and compost as best we can, but we are still left every week with some trash. Up to this point we've dutifully hauled it to the local dump, which then trucks it away to some landfill. My husband has recently discovered that, since we live outside of city limits, we are able to burn our trash. Thus my question -- between a landfill and burning, which is the lesser of two evils? Daily Grist |
| Their Day in Cote Groundwork begins for Ivory Coast toxic-dumping lawsuit It's been almost five months since a cargo ship dumped over 400 tons of toxic "slops" in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, leaving at least 10 people dead and more than 40,000 ill. At the time, residents of the African nation responded by blockading streets, burning stuff, and collapsing their government. Now that's direct action ... |

Daily Grist |
| Mercury Retrograde U.S. DOE backs off plan to sell neurotoxin to rest of world Caving in to critics and maybe, just maybe, its own conscience, the U.S. Department of Energy has decided against selling off nearly 1,300 tons of mercury left from pre-1960s weapons production. Though the neurotoxin brings a quick buck on the world market -- it's popular with developing countries that use it for mining gold -- DOE will follow ... |

| Plumb Crazy U.S. EPA considers delisting lead as an air pollutant That sound you hear? It's jaws dropping everywhere in response to the U.S. EPA's announcement that it might stop regulating lead as an air pollutant. Citing the fact that concentrations of the toxic heavy metal in the air have dropped 90 percent since 1980, and using logic we can only assume was supplied by EPA administrator Stephen Johnson's six-year-old granddaughter, ... |

Wake Up, Little Sushi On sustainable sushi |
Umbra Fisk |
29 Nov 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, My wife and I love sushi, but we're increasingly concerned about sustainable harvesting. Although we treat ourselves to sushi only once or twice a month, it adds up, and we can't help but wonder about the impact. There's no sensation in the world like letting a slab of sashimi salmon dissolve in your mouth, but can my wife and I continue to enjoy sushi without feeling guilty? What can people like us -- environmental ... |

| What Goes Around Dumbs Around Bush administration considers unloading mercury on world market With stunning foresight, the U.S. Department of Energy is pondering a sale of more than 1,300 tons of mercury on the world market. Never mind that mercury sold overseas will, in all likelihood, just drift back to the U.S. as toxic air pollution. Never mind that, as Linda Greer of the Natural Resources Defense Council objects, &q ... |

| Too Hot to Handle Toxic exposure gives firefighters higher risk of some cancers, study says Rushing into infernos seems risky enough, but new findings suggest flames may be the least of a firefighter's worries. Researchers at the University of Cincinnati say blaze-battlers face a higher risk of developing some cancers than the general population, likely due to their exposure to chemicals, including benzene and styrene. In a review of 32 U.S. a ... |

Chemically Dependent Decades after Silent Spring, pesticides remain a menace -- especially to farmworkers |

| In 1962, Rachel Carson published her landmark Silent Spring, which documented the ravages of agricultural pesticides, particularly DDT, on wildlife. The book inspired wide outrage and helped spark the modern environmental movement. It eventually led to a (now-controversial) ban on DDT. But since then, use of other pesticides has boomed. Sign of the times? Photos: ... |
