Bat Out of Heaven Red Sox partner with NRDC to green Fenway Park |

21 Sep 2007 |
News |
| Posted at 10:00 AM on 21 Sep 2007 America's national pastime is going green in Beantown as the Red Sox step up to the plate to make going to Fenway Park a whole new ball game. Under a five-year partnership with the National Resources Defense Council, the nation's oldest active ballpark may vend beer in corn-starch-based cups, serve local, organic food from concession stands, add solar panels, and even initiate a new tradition: a fi ... |

Greenie Get Your Gun Number of hunters and fishers in U.S. has declined since 1996 |
|
04 Sep 2007 |
News |
| Posted at 7:50 AM on 04 Sep 2007 Wildlife agencies have been scrambling to make up funding shortfalls in the last few years due at least in part to a drop in the number of hunters and fishers and the revenue-generating licenses they buy. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, hunter numbers have declined about 10 percent between 1996 and 2006, down to about 12.5 million from 14 million, due in part to t ... |

On the Ball: Lack of specific information edition A mysterious World Cup goes green |

| The sporting! It continues to go green! Solar panels on stadium roofs, recycled pitch-watering systems and fair trade snacks for half time should make the World Cup a model for environmentally friendly sporting events, French officials said on Tuesday. It's the rugby World Cup that they speak of, by the by. You'd have to search the interwebs to find that out, because the story never mentions the word 'rugby.' Not so much with the key information there, Reut ... |

Swiss soccer team has the world's largest stadium-integrated photovoltaic system on the roof of the Stade de Suisse Wankdorf Bern! Heh heh. Wankdorf. |

| Beijing's four-day trial run of keeping vehicles off of its roads was either wildly successful or a complete wash, depending who you ask. The city plans to put 50,000 bicycles out to rent during the Games in hopes of easing congestion and pollution. (But will they be in fancy vending machines)? You'll also be glad to know that Paula Radcliffe, the world record holder in the women's marathon (2:15.25!) and a sufferer of exercise-induced asthma, plans to compete re ... |

| About six months too late to be part of our "oh look, all the glossies are going green" trend piece, Backpacker magazine has put together its own global warming issue. And yes, before y'all ask, it's printed on recycled, chlorine-free paper. The cover features a hiker waist-deep in water with a submerged mountain behind him (familiar, no?), and the bold print advertises stories about "The Future of Wilderness" and "Green Gear That Really ... |

On the Ball: Play hard NYC debates grass v. artificial turf on playing fields |
Sarah K. Burkhalter |
18 Aug 2007 |
Gristmill |
| This NYT piece is interesting in that oh-I-never-thought-of-that sort of way. Grass playing fields are -- in New York City, at least -- an endangered species: To avoid the ignominy of being trampled underfoot, the grass fields need to be idle all winter, and once a week the rest of the year. As a result, there is increasing pressure from league coaches to install synthetic turf to allow the fields to be used year-round to meet local demand. But not only can ... |

Burning too much energy at the gym? New York Sports Club kicks in to conserve |

| The other day at the gym I was engaging in classic attention-deficient media trawling -- attempting to read my magazine, watch the morning newscast, and work up a sweat all at the same time. So it didn't bother me too much when the TV kept shutting off. The equipment at these high-traffic fitness clubs is renowned for breaking down, so I chalked it up to an electrical glitch. Today I learned that in late July, the New York Sports Clubs reprogrammed their televi ... |

| Hold on to your long boards, ladies and gentlemen, the Summer X Games is now underway in sunny Los Angeles, Calif. And while I can't say I personally would compete in a sport where one must hurl oneself through the air and then land oneself atop a foot-long piece of wood on wheels, I do applaud the Games' efforts to leave as little a footprint as possible. | In college I wrote my honors thesis on the connection between running and spirituality. And I like the idea of eco-running as a combining-of-passions sort of idea. Except I'm not really into combining my passions a la eco-runner Samuel, by picking up trash while I run. Because I'm training for a marathon, and I live in the city, and if I picked up every bit of trash on my long runs, I'd probably never finish.
