Holly Richmond |
21 Aug 2008 |

South Central Community Farm: Not dead yet In L.A., Mayor Villaraigosa plays footsie with Forever 21 over site of former farm |
Tom Philpott |
19 Aug 2008 |

| Photo: loudtiger When I lived in New York City, I used to marvel at the weeds that would force their way up through sidewalk cracks. What a will to live, I thought: From clumps of dirt crammed between concrete slabs, these vigorous shoots fended off the hard, slapping heels of a thousand rushing city dwellers, just to claim a place in the sun. The effort to save South Central Community Farm in Los Angeles reminds me of those defiant survivors. Stepped on by the ... |

Podiatribe On toxins in your body |
Umbra Fisk |
18 Aug 2008 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, I saw an infomercial late at night about these foot pads that you wear to sleep and they will "remove toxins from your body." I didn't know who else to ask, so you win that lottery. Do we actually have that many toxins in our body? And does wearing silly pads on our feet really pull them out so we can easily throw these toxins in the trash? I think you should do an experiment and let me know if I'm missing the boat ... |

Scents and Sensibility Making a stink about green(ish) deodorants |
Kate Sheppard |
12 Aug 2008 |
The Bottom Line |
| Choosing a deodorant can be the pits. Upon moving to Washington, D.C., about a year ago, I quickly realized two things: Our Nation's Capitol was built on a swamp and The Hill is called that for a reason. So biking -- my chief form of transit in the city -- can be quite the damp, smelly affair. After arriving at more than a few congressional hearings smelling certifiably ripe, I realized my hippie stick ... |

From A to Green |
| Make your list and check it twice. Lately, the world news has been filled with stories of hungry people struggling to feed themselves as food prices rise dramatically. Even in the U.S. and other wealthy countries, where the situation is not as dire, people have been altering their eating and spending habits to adjust to the higher bills. Always an ethical bridesmaid ... Tips for bridesmaids wanting fair-trade frocks |
Sarah van Schagen |

| As if the list of bridesmaidsy duties (party-planning, dress-bustling, photo-posing, tear-wiping, etc.) isn't long enough, finding an ethically sourced, eco-conscious, and, um, attractive frock for the occasion is no piece of (multi-tiered) cake.Today, The Guardian addresses this very dilemma: One of my dearest friends will be getting married next year and has asked me to be her bridesmaid. Tell Costco to stop selling climate crack Compressed air cans are contributing to ozone destruction |

| Photo: Jeff Mo There was an interesting post a while ago about the havoc created by compressed air cans -- you know, the ones you use to dust off your keyboard. Who knew that they were full of intensely powerful greenhouse gases? I sure didn't, but thanks to Eric de Place, now I do -- so I make myself insufferable whenever I see someone with one, and I point out how easy it is to just turn the keyboard over and knock the crumbs out. But whenever I see a pallet of ... |

| Clean for a day. Ah, dish duty. Who hasn't ignored it, dreaded it, rock-paper-scissored over it? But there comes a time in each eater's life when dishes must be done. Happily, today's generation of eco-detergents makes it a less-toxic task than in the past -- though not completely pure. Our Ruined Harvest As corn and soy fields drown in rainwater, the food crisis deepens |
Tom Philpott |

| A cornucopia of bad circumstances. Here in the United States, we grow 44 percent of the world's corn crop, and 38 percent of its soy.
