| Yeargh! This week sucks. We're having a whole series of planning/strategy meetings at Grist, which have eaten all my blogging time. There's a conference on ethics and climate change starting tomorrow at UW that I intended to go to but now probably can't. The WGIII IPCC report comes out on Friday, and I was supposed to write a story on it, but when am I going to do that? The Andrew Bird concert is on Saturday night. I've got a piece on smart grids for Popular Science ... |

Pollan continues to fail to ever write anything less than awesome The new NYT piece does not disappoint |
David Roberts |

Gristmill |
| I can't believe no Gristian has yet commented on the latest Michael Pollan piece in the NYT. What, is saying 'Pollan has a new piece and it's awesome' getting tedious? This one focuses on the farm bill and how it makes us fat: A public-health researcher from Mars might legitimately wonder why a nation faced with what its surgeon general has called 'an epidemic' of obesity would at the same time be in the business of subsidizing the production of high-fructose corn ... |

| This evening, I was on Fox's Hannity & Colmes discussing ... toilet paper. Yes, really. I'm sure my stiff, awkward performance will show up on YouTube sooner or later, so that's something to ... hm, 'look forward to' doesn't seem appropriate. Expect, then. |

| The piece on Grist in Outside magazine -- which we mentioned here -- is now online. You'll want to read every last delicious word! And while you're at it, enter their contest: send a funny Gristy headline for the piece to mesofunny@outsidemag.com and win a two-year subscription. One thing I wanted to say about it, now that the whole thing's available: The piece mainly focuses on Chip, and to a lesser extent me and Lisa. Conspicuously and unjustly absent is our othe ... |

Brooklyn vacation report A good time was had by ... me |

| Just got back in town today. Not quite ready to jump back in the grind, so I'll procrastinate a bit by talking about my vacation. We woke up Saturday morning(ish) to discover that quite literally across the street from the friend's place where we were staying (on the east side of Fort Green Park) there was a little street market, with vendors selling local, organic, farm-raised, home-baked, hand-crafted, packed-full-of-authentic-goodness foodstuffs and crafts. Thus, ... |

| My face may be made for radio, but I don't especially like the way my voice sounds. Even so, I accepted an invitation to talk ethanol on today's Sunday Salon show on Berkeley's KPFA radio station. I'm glad I did. The host, Sandra Lupien, was very well-prepared and asked great questions. The other guests were Isabella Kenfield, who has done great work about Brazil's ethanol program as a freelance journalist there; and Jake Caldwell, who is an energy researcher for t ... |

| It's late to ask, I realize, but: my wife and I will be in Brooklyn for the next three or four days. Without children. Hooray! Our plan is to sleep in, and eat, and read. And maybe shop. And then sleep in some more. Aaah ... Any suggestions about sites to see? Places to eat or drink? Out-of-the-way treasures they don't tell you about in the guide books? Share. (As I'll be in Brooklyn, without internet access, I won't be working. So all you contributors, if you ha ... |

Watch TV for Grist! Tell us when green bursts from the screen |
Katharine Wroth |
14 Feb 2007 |
Gristmill |
| For the second time in two nights, I was innocently watching bad TV when a green theme popped up. A gal can't get a break from her day job these days with so many producers rushing to prove their eco-cred. So how far-reaching is this trend?Figuring that out will either require me to watch way too much TV or it will require your help. Loyal Grist readers, I ask ye: please think of Grist each time green creeps into one of your favorite shows, and report it here.I'll ... |

| Speaking of incremental improvements, Grist will be launching a weekly podcast shortly. Before we officially roll it out to the entire Grist audience, I'm hoping you Gristmillians could take a listen and provide some feedback. Specifically, we'd like to make sure that the RSS feed is working, the podcasts are downloading and playing fine, and the sound quality is good. Grist still kneads your dough

Gristmill |
| Dear Gristmillers, As I'm sure you're now aware, since we've chattered about it incessantly for the last two weeks, Grist has to move. We're growing, you see -- and no, it isn't that we're getting too big for our britches since being written up in the Columbia Journalism Review. It's that we're growing in our ambitions, and in our reach. We need dough for more office space, and also to act on the big ideas we have for new columns and features and puns. We're now ... |

| Dear Gristmillers, Major thanks to all of you who have contributed to Grist's moving fund over the last ten days, helping the world's fiercest, funniest environmental news team attain bigger offices and greater journalistic heights. If you haven't contributed yet, we'll soon stop nagging you, concluding that you're either broke, or care only about moving us to tears. A gift will help our scrappy nonprofit not only move to better offices, but move on big plans to br ... |

| Dear Gristmillers, It's nearly a week into our two-week 'Get a Move On' fundraiser, and we still have $45,000 to raise for the bigger offices we need for Grist's growing team, growing ambitions, and groaning puns. And what if we don't raise this dough? Well, we could improvise, I suppose. Like today, when we experimented with renting three tables at a local coffee shop. (I'm not at liberty to divulge its name, but it starts with 'S' and rhymes with 'world dominatio ... |

| Dear Gristmillians, I'm getting a little worried about some of my fellow Grist staffers. As you may know, Grist is growing in both size and ambition, and has outgrown our current office. We must move -- but to where? We've tried cramming into a Flexcar parked behind our old space, but that is just not working out. Among other things, we can't seem to agree on one radio station. So, we're off in search of a new location where we'll hopefully have a little more ... |

| Dear Gristmillers, If you're paying close attention you know that we're faced with a big move and need to raise $60,000. As I mentioned yesterday, if you can help, you could get a shot at one of 24 pairs of planet-friendly shoes from Min, or a hand-crafted bamboo bike from Calfee Design worth -- gulp -- $3,000. For those of you I haven't heard from yet, I suppose it's all a matter of enticements. Perhaps you're not one for foot- or pedal-power, so aren't motivated ... |

| Dear Gristmillers, Have we moved you? Even once? To smile, gasp, march, rally, or inveigh? If so, it's time for a switcheroo. This time we need you to help move us. As you can see, our original office has gotten a bit cramped. But a physical move isn't the only one in store for Grist in the coming weeks. We're also expanding the cutting-edge political and cultural coverage you've come to depend on. We're moving on big stories like the U.S. elections and the climate ... |

| 'Life's a Bleach and Then You Die.' So true. With 53% of the vote, this headline won last week's battle royale, beating out runner-up 'Oh No He Didn't.' | It is no surprise (to me) that last week's winner is 'Enthuse Your Curbism' with 53% of the vote. What I do find surprising is that 'Waddle They Do Now?' faired better than 'Good Mennonite, and Good Luck'. Go figure. Also a little disappointing is the number of votes: 13 (an alltime low). I'd like to think you were spending all your time voting for us in the People's Choice Awards. If so, thank you, as Grist is currently kicking butt. Anyhoo, here are the next ba ... |
