Cuz all the cool kids are doing it Twice the Grist with half the pain: Netvibes and Twitter |
Daniel Bachhuber |
16 Aug 2007 |
Gristmill |
| For all of you tech-savvy Grist readers, we've added two more methods of getting yer Grist: Twitter is 'a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send 'updates' (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) via SMS, instant messaging, email, the Twitter website, or an application such as Twitterrific.' In other words, it's Facebook statuses mashed up with RSS and IM. In nontechnical terms, it's everyone in the same room together ye ... |

Huffington calls on press to do that thing I did
|
David Roberts |
16 Aug 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Arianna Huffington wonders why, with all the press coverage of the Utah mine collapse, so little has focused on the horrible safety record, anti-unionism, and political back-room dealings of the mine company's faux-folksy CEO, Bob Murray. What she does not do, apparently, is read her own site. Just saying. |

Shameless self-promotion Friday Writing about Mooney, writing about storms |
Kate Sheppard |
10 Aug 2007 |
Gristmill |
| I reviewed Chris Mooney's new book, Storm World: Hurricanes, Politics, and the Battle Over Global Warming, for The American Prospect, and it's up today. Gristmiller Kit Stolz reviewed it here a while ago, but uh, mine is ... longer. Anyway, the book is good, though not the galvanizing polemic that made his first book, The Republican War on Science, a bestseller. But Mooney's got quite the knack for telling the back story on how science and politics became friends w ... |

| The Guardian has just put out a list of the top ten green websites. You'll never guess who's No. 1. The online magazine Grist proved the most popular with Guardian and Observer staff, suggesting it has met its aim to rescue coverage of environment issues from being 'predictable, demoralising, or dull'. 'An informed and intelligent approach to the environment and wider ethical issues,' says Lucy Siegle, the Observer's ethical living correspondent. 'I also appreciate ... |

YearlyKos: My long day

| This morning, I woke up early to go to the Energize America 2020 panel. There was far too much information to replicate here -- you can see the details of the plan on their site -- but as I said earlier, what's remarkable is that such a collaborative project has produced such a solid, practical plan. And the openness of the process is not some add-on, it's part of the core principles guiding the project. Read through the plan -- it fills enormous gaps in the energy p ... |

| As you may or may not know, this weekend the progressive website Daily Kos is holding its annual convention -- YearlyKos -- in Chicago. According to noted advocate of moderation and compassion Bill O'Reilly, Daily Kos -- which has over 50,000 registered members and on the order of 600,000 visits a day -- is a hate site that's all but indistinguishable from Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, Mussolini, and David Duke. (Much more here.) Sounds like it should be a good party ... |

| Hmmm. This is interesting. Seems that American Express is running a contest, and the winning project gets $5 million. I mention this for two reasons: out of civic duty, and because our project is in the running for five million freakin' dollars. We are currently about 1,200 measly votes from making it to the next round. The project, "Harvest the Sun," is a collaboration of Vote Solar and the Center for Resource Solutions, and would go toward our work ... |

Fox attacks the environment; I do a poor job defending it Videos for your viewing pleasure, if that's the word for it |

| Film director Robert Greenwald has been producing a series of videos exposing Fox News as a propaganda arm of the far right wing (is "exposing" the right word when everyone already knows it?), under the rubric Fox Attacks. The latest in the series is Fox Attacks: The Environment, which is about Fox's hackery on the subject of global warming. Here it is: Accompanying the video is a campaign by a grassroots coalition to spread the word about Fox's environm ... |

Grist D.C. reader party: Thanks for the memories A good time was had by all |

| It's been over a week ago now, but memories of Grist's D.C. reader party linger on like the stain on my boss Chip's shirt from where I knocked his "causemo" all over him at the very beginning of the night, in front of several members of our board of directors. (See: How to Get Ahead at Work, p. 245) The grace and good humor with which he, um, failed to fire me on the spot were characteristic of the evening: lots of very smart, very charming people. | As Dave noted yesterday, we rolled out a new site feature last weekend, and although we simply call it 'topics,' it's something we've been working on for months. Eventually it will be integrated into the site just as profoundly as commenting. Like the integrated search rolled out a while back, 'topics' is meant to give you another tool to find current and archived articles. Some features will be helpful for everyone -- the 'read more about' tool embedded in artic ... |

'Environmental pragmatist' in The New York Times All about hydrogen |
Joseph Romm |
21 May 2007 |

| Probably half the media queries I get concern hydrogen -- thanks to my last book, The Hype about Hydrogen. Yesterday's New York Times Magazine had an exceedingly long article, 'The Zero-Energy Solution,' on a solar-hydrogen home. The author refers to me as 'an environmental pragmatist,' no doubt because I don't automatically embrace every environmental solution that comes along, but judge each on its technical and practical merit. I have written a number of arti ... |

Jerry Falwell dead We shed a tear |
David Roberts |

| Fundamentalist Christian minister Jerry Falwell is dead at 73. It's probably churlish to use the occasion of someone's death to point out that said person was a paranoid, avaricious, hate-spewing enabler of America's basest lizard-brain impulses, so I won't go there. I will, however, note that one of the proudest moments of my young career was being cited by name in the course of a rambling, delusional Falwell sermon on global warming, which apparently is 'Satan's Att ... |
