'Mine's bigger' Me on Hannity & Colmes |
David Roberts |
22 Dec 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Here I am on Hannity & Colmes, 21 Dec. 2007. Mark Steyn was sitting in for Sean Hannity. The other guest is Chris Horner of CEI. There's some satisfaction in taking shots at Horner and CEI. God knows they get off too easy most of the time. And watching Horner bumble around and make no sense is fun.He called me an 'alarmist' and decried ad hominem attacks in the same sentence. In a discussion of whether there's a scientific consensus, you are not allowed ... |

Watch more Fox News! FutureGen on at 5:00 p.m. Central, tonight |
Sean Casten |
17 Dec 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Fox News is doing a special report on the FutureGen project and -- rather remarkably -- couldn't find anyone to argue that $6500/kW coal-fired power coupled to a hydrogen plant is a dumb idea. Then along came Grist, and this crazy blogger who thinks FutureGen is dopey. The interview was last Friday; they're running the coverage tonight, in advance of tomorrow's decision on whether Illinois or Texas will 'win.' (Nice plug for Grist here, eh? Apparently, nowhere else ... |

His easily digestible distillations of PDFs? His amusing quotes by flacks and hacks? Then please: donate to Grist now. Help us get our Umbra back
|
David Roberts |
03 Dec 2007 |
Gristmill |
| So I'm getting ready to make my Christmas wreath and I'm wondering whether there's someplace I can get organic pine cones and I go to check it out with my No. 1 eco-tipper Umbra and OMFG SHE'S BEEN KIDNAPPED! That's right, they've absconded with Umbra. Yes ... they. Word has it they're making her eat from styrofoam and throw bottles in the trash. They're even threatening to make her write her next column on the benefits of liquid coal! For the love of God, don't let i ... |

Agritourism: not just for Italy anymore The NYT gets its hands dirty |
Tom Philpott |
26 Nov 2007 |
Gristmill |
| In Italy and France, people don't love small farms just for the delicious food they produce. They also prize them for their looks -- small-scale diversified agriculture is pleasing to the senses. So city dwellers often head out to the country on the weekend and hang out on farms, and support them with their tourist dollars. Last week, Emily Biuso of The New York Times ran a good piece about how agritourism is slowly catching on in the United States. I direct you to ... |

Success
|
David Roberts |
18 Nov 2007 |
Gristmill |
| The Grist presidential forum on climate and energy went off without a hitch and was a huge success. I'll have much more to say about it tomorrow, but for now I just want to thank, again, all the groups that worked to bring it together, the wonder-working production crew at the venue, and the candidates who participated. As for me, the adrenaline from the event has worn off, but the subsequent alcohol intake has not, so I believe I'll go to bed. More later. |

Shameless self-promotion RED positioned to fund $1.5 billion of recycled energy projects |
Sean Casten |
16 Nov 2007 |
Gristmill |
| While humility makes it awkward for me to be posting this, David said it would be OK. (I swear!) More seriously, this is a day of great pride at RED and I wanted to share a bit with you -- and perhaps explain the lack of time I've had for more insightful posts lately. We've just completed a pretty substantial equity raise, with funds available to invest in recycled energy projects that convert waste heat to power. The target for our investments are places where ... |

| The blogs are abuzz over this depressing new Shorenstein study of media campaign coverage: In all, 63% of the campaign stories focused on political and tactical aspects of the campaign. That is nearly four times the number of stories about the personal backgrounds of the candidates (17%) or the candidates' ideas and policy proposals (15%). And just 1% of stories examined the candidates' records or past public performance, the study found. The press' fo ... |

Me in Fast Company

David Roberts |

| I don't think I've mentioned it here, but I've got a monthly column on green business in the print edition of Fast Company. I wasn't sure whether they put it up for free online, but it appears they do: my column from the November edition is right here. It is a piece of craven corporatist capitulating to The Man, by which I mean it's a qualified defense of carbon offsets. Give 'er a read. |

| Heard the hype about Grist's hometown throw-down and purchased your ticket, but haven't quite figured out what to wear how you're gettin' there? You're not alone. Grist reader Diana from Olympia, Wash., wrote to us asking if anyone else from her area might be carpooling, and we thought to ourselves: selves, might there be others hoping to hitch a ride so as not to arrive at an awesomely organic eco-party via single-person carbon-mobile? | Two things I wrote yesterday are now up on other sites. Over at the Guardian's opinion site, I've got a piece on Obama's new energy plan. (Wow, the comments are really awful over there.) Over at TPM Cafe, I'm taking part in a "book club" roundtable on S&N's new book Break Through (heard of it?). While my comments here on Grist focused on the policy angle, over there I'm addressing the political story. Here's a taste: Environmentalism is not dead. It ... |

Or if you like, you can watch Bill talking to me: One amendment, for those who actually listen to the whole thing: I praised renewable portfolio standards for being 'technology neutral' in that they don't dictate what 'non-fossil' energy has to fill the quota.
