What's That, a Bout? Obama talks about fighting the nuclear industry, but his record is less strident |
|
04 Feb 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 4:51 AM on 04 Feb 2008 Barack Obama talks on the campaign trail about fighting the nuclear power industry, but the real story is more complicated, reports The New York Times in a front-page story. In 2006, Illinois residents were up in arms after finding out that Exelon Corp. had not informed them about radioactive leaks at one of its nuclear power plants. Obama responded by introduci ... |

Obama Super Bowl ad

Gristmill |
| Far as I know, Obama was the only candidate to buy an ad during the Super Bowl today, one that ran in 24 states, to the tune of $250,000. It's interesting to me that in perhaps the highest profile, highest stakes ad the Obama campaign has ever run, the focus is on two strongly progressive messages: ending the war and saving the planet. Here it is: |

| The OMFG WILL GORE ENDORSE NOW?! stories are getting almost as tiresome as the OMFG WILL GORE RUN NOW?! stories got. One of the sillier aspects of the Silly Season, I guess. Noam Scheiber speculates why Gore might keep waiting, despite the many people begging him to enter the fray. |

Carbon-loaded question Obama parries ABEC |
David Roberts |
31 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Obama gets buttonholed by a planted ABEC coal shill: Nothing he says here is particularly objectionable. The priority on reducing CO2 emissions is welcome. It is true that if we can figure out a way to cost-effectively sequester coal emissions, it will bring some benefit. More important, though, is what's not said. He says we can't emit more CO2, but he stops short of calling for a moratorium on dirty coal plants with no sequestration. (He says he won't 'license ... |

Tonight's climate-less Democratic debate: Brought to you on behalf of ABEC
|
David Roberts |
31 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| I looked through the transcript, and as far as I can tell there wasn't a single question about climate change in tonight's Democratic debate between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. This is the fourth CNN debate sponsored by coal front group Americans for Balanced Energy Choices (ABEC). Not one of the four has contained a question on climate. |

Arnie hearts John Cali gov Schwarzenegger endorses John McCain |
David Roberts |
31 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| So Schwarzenegger endorsed McCain today, citing his fight against wasteful spending, his "vision" for protecting the environment ("and the economy simultaneously"), and his national security credentials. Of course McCain's battle against earmarks is entirely symbolic, given that they are a tiny sliver of federal spending. His "vision" on global warming amounts to an outdated and weak cap-and-trade program coupled with massive subsidies fo ... |

| Posted at 5:16 AM on 31 Jan 2008 Last night's Republican debate spawned at least one memorable surprise: all four GOP candidates appeared to express support for California in its battle with the U.S. EPA to get a waiver it needs to implement its greenhouse-gas emissions standards for vehicles. Competing for the Governator's endorsement? All four Republican candidates support California's right to a waiver from the Bush EPA |

| In tonight's debate, much to my surprise, the Republican candidates got a direct question about the California waiver. Also rather to my surprise, all four said they support California's right to a waiver. It's amazing how isolated Johnson (*cough*Cheney*cough*) is on this. Not one of his party's standard-bearers will back him up. That is some sad sh*t. Here's the portion of the debate on Pavley and climate change: [L.A. TIMES' JANET] HOOK: This is for Senator ... |

The Endorsmenator On the Schwarzenegger endorsement |
David Roberts |
30 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| There is speculation all over the place about a Schwarzenegger endorsement. "Sources" tell CNN that he'll endorse McCain tomorrow. McCain's a gimmee for Arnie -- another maverick Republican who supports action on global warming. And since it looks increasingly likely that McCain's got it sewn up, that's probably that. Matters would have been much more interesting if Romney got the nomination. I strongly suspect, and have heard from a few sources of my own, ... |

Here is his graceful announcement: Here is Grist's factsheet on Edwards' environmental record; here is our interview with Edwards. Republican primary in Florida

David Roberts |
29 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| In case you hadn't heard, there's a Republican primary in Florida today. It has largely come down to a Romney/McCain contest, the polls have been bouncing all over the place, it's utterly impossible to predict what will happen, and it's likely that whoever wins -- particularly if it's a sizeable win -- will secure the Republican nomination. So it's a big deal. Naturally I won't/can't endorse anyone, but just considering things from the generic green voter's perspectiv ... |

| David Roberts has argued for waiting until 2009 to pass a climate bill. Environmental Defense is pushing hard for a bill this year, and I appreciate his invitation to explain why. We agree that the political landscape in 2009 will be much like today's as far as climate change legislation goes: we'll have the same interest groups, a similar Senate line-up, and a crowded national agenda that threatens to divert politicians' attention. | I have predicted that Al Gore won't endorse a candidate during the primary. I still think that's probably true, and appropriate. But I'm starting to wonder. What if Obama's momentum -- from SC and his recent endorsements -- gives him just enough juice to reach near-parity with Clinton on Feb. 5, where she's long been thought to have a substantial advantage? What if their campaigns stay in a close dogfight for weeks or months afterward, even leading up to the conventi ... |
