| Photo: AP/Paul Sancya Al Gore endorsed Barack Obama on Monday evening in Detroit, Mich., calling him 'a candidate who, in response to those doubting our ability to solve the climate crisis and create a bright future, inspired millions to say, 'Yes we can.'' 'For America to lead the world through the dangers and opportunity we're seeing before us, we've got to have new leadership,' said Gore. All that, and Gore Al Gore to endorse Barack Obama in Detroit tonight |

| At long last, Al Gore is jumping back into the presidential election ring. With an endorsement, we mean. In a speech to be delivered at 8:30 p.m. EST in Detroit, Mich., the Goracle will endorse Barack Obama. From the announcement on Gore's blog: A few hours from now I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama. From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected Presiden ... |

| 'I think if I was Senator Obama I would say the biggest economic problem we face is the biggest national security problem and the biggest environmental problem. And if I were him, I would ask Al Gore to serve as his vice president, his energy czar, in his administration to reduce our consumption and reliance on foreign energy sources. That would send a signal to the world, to American people, to Congress, to everybody, that America's getting serious about this horrendo ... |

McCain has done 'even more' than Al Gore on global warming At least, according to South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham |

| Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.): 'Climate change is the road less traveled but he's traveled it even more than Al Gore,' Graham said. 'Al Gore has talked about it and deserves great recognition but he was around here a long time and never introduced a bill.' Let's see: McCain got 43 votes the first time he pushed his bill with Lieberman. He added some nuclear subsidies for the second go-round and got 38 votes. I'm not sure he can lay c ... |

| In response to a question about whether he'd consider Gore for a cabinet position, Obama said: I would. Not only will I, but I will make a commitment that Al Gore will be at the table and play a central part in us figuring out how we solve this problem. He's somebody I talk to on a regular basis. I'm already consulting with him in terms of these issues, but climate change is real. It is something we have to deal with now, not 10 years from now, not 20 years fro ... |

BREAKING: Al Gore still not running, though superdelegates may force him to, only probably not

| In his column today, Joe Klein spins out a preposterously unlikely scenario whereby the Democratic superdelegates get together and conspire to pass over both Obama and Clinton and instead hand the nomination to ... Al Gore. Two or three paragraphs in I thinking, oh, Joe, pish-tosh. Then: Pish-tosh, you say, and you're probably right. OK then. |

| I wouldn't normally post about the latest round of Gore endorsement speculation, since nobody ever has anything new to say about it, but this comes from Steve Clemons, a D.C. insider who knows of what he speaks. He says a source close to the Clinton campaign told him that a rumor is running rampant that Gore is going to come off the fence and endorse Obama soon. Again, this is a third-hand account, worth only so much, but Clemons has credibility, so I thought I'd pass ... |

The enGoresment reconsidered If Gore's endorsement could make the difference, will he give it? |

| I have predicted that Al Gore won't endorse a candidate during the primary. I still think that's probably true, and appropriate. But I'm starting to wonder. What if Obama's momentum -- from SC and his recent endorsements -- gives him just enough juice to reach near-parity with Clinton on Feb. 5, where she's long been thought to have a substantial advantage? What if their campaigns stay in a close dogfight for weeks or months afterward, even leading up to the conventi ... |

| I said earlier that there's no point in Al Gore endorsing anyone in the primary. But if he does want to have a salutary effect on the presidential election, I have a proposal for him. More on that in a minute. It's looking like John McCain has a better than even chance of getting the Republican nomination. He has the distinction of being by far the most sensible Republican candidate on the subject of climate change. It is one of his storied heresies from Republican o ... |

Whom will Gore endorse?

| First, in other primary news, Bill Richardson, whose energy plan was excellent but who failed to excite anyone, at all, even a little bit, has dropped out of the Dem primary. Also, John Kerry, who didn't excite all that many people either, has endorsed Barack Obama. The big question, according to Josh, is whom Al Gore will endorse. I've seen lots of speculation about this. My strong inclination is that Gore will not endorse anyone until the general, when he will endor ... |

Gore will not serve under any future administration
|
David Roberts |

Gristmill |
| Al Gore says that he will not serve in a future administration. If he returns to politics, which he still 'does not expect' to do, it will be as a presidential candidate. Virtually every Dem candidate for president -- most explicitly Obama -- has dropped hints about recruiting Gore for their administration. Guess that won't happen.Probably for the best, too. He's more effective as an outside critic, building pressure for action. |

The enGorsement Who will Gore endorse, and does it matter? |

| Some commentators are taking the unique approach of discussing Al Gore's Nobel Peace Prize not in terms of whether he'll run for president, but in terms of the dangers of climate change who he'll endorse for president. Marc Ambinder says both Edwards and Obama are actively courting Gore; Chris Cillizza says it will be one of the two. Noam Scheiber thinks it will be Obama, and FWIW, Grist readers agree (see poll). Will the prize raise the political value of the endors ... |

| 'Do I derange you?' Photo: Eric Neitzel/WireImage. Gore's Nobel certainly brought out the mouthbreathers, but it also inspired some insightful commentary, some of it, mercifully, not about its effects on the presidential race. Most commentators did, however, find it difficult to avoid the Bush/Gore comparison. Here's a sample of some of the better stuff I've found around the tubes.
