Moyers talks to Boxer
|
David Roberts |

Gristmill |
| Wow, you kinda forget what good TV journalism looks like until you watch Bill Moyers. He makes the cable babblers look like children. Don't miss Moyers interviewing Barbara Boxer on the flame-out of the Climate Security Act. She's really quite good on this, but in the end, as much as I kind of regret saying it, I'm just not sure she has the centrist credibility to sell this program. It's not fair, but optics are optics, and D.C. is a shallow, silly place. |

Rep. Bartlett hits House on renewables -- and I don't mean Gregory House Time to focus on tax credits, not Lieberman-Warner |

| I love House. Not the House of Representatives, but the TV show. Everybody loves to see people with seemingly inexplicable symptoms saved from sure death. No doubt that explains the fascination with the Lieberman-Warner bill. But people ... I've been trying to be gentle about this ... it's dead. Sure, like Amber on the season finale [spoiler alert!] L-W can be briefly revived so we can say goodbye to it forever, but that is really just a soap opera gimmick. We do ... |

News |
| Posted at 7:53 AM on 09 May 2008 The war in Iraq is one reason the U.S. is such an environmental laggard, Barack Obama said in a CNN interview Thursday. "I think the way we have run this war in Iraq has ... led us to ignore the critical needs for us to focus on a sound energy policy in this country," Obama told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "It has left us unable to lead on critical global issues like global warming. ... |

| Posted at 1:11 PM on 01 Apr 2008 While it is not true that Al Gore is running for president (honestly, how do these rumors get started?), it is true that his Alliance for Climate Protection has officially launched a new "we" campaign. The ad campaign aims to spend $300 million over three years to create a sense of both urgency and solvability around the climate crisis. The first ad hits TVs on Wednesday, likening the ... |

Al Gore's got some big bucks Thoughts on the newly announced 'we' campaign |
Jon Rynn |
01 Apr 2008 |
Gristmill |
| So Al Gore announced a $300 million 3-year effort 'aimed at mobilizing Americans to push for aggressive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.' My question is, wouldn't it be better to spend that money on building grassroots organizations pushing for climate change legislation instead of spending it mostly, I presume, on advertising? If $100 million was spent each year on grassroots organizations in 30 major cities, that would work out to $3 million per each major metr ... |

Urgency and solvability: The "we" campaign Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection unveils ambitious $300 million ad campaign |
David Roberts |
31 Mar 2008 |

| If you read Juliet Eilperin's great rundown in the Washington Post, you know that today marks the launch of a massive PR effort from Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection. Gore has concluded that U.S. politicians will continue to be timid on climate change until the public demands otherwise. "The simple algorithm is this: It's important to change the light bulbs, but it's much more important to change the laws," he said. "The options available to ... |

Idiot protest or brilliant parody?
|
David Roberts |
01 Feb 2008 |
Gristmill |
| I got a strange PR release today that sent me to this. I've read it over pretty closely and I still can't tell whether it's intended to be parody. If it is parody, it's quite clever -- really nails the self-righteousness arms race underway in the eat-your-own faction of the green movement. If it is serious, it may rank as the stupidest environmental protest ever, and that is against some fairly stiff competition. |

| I channel surf (I'm a guy). I find something of interest and as soon as a commercial hits, I move on. I landed on Keith Olbermann's show, Countdown, just as he was launching into Bush. I sat there shaking my head in awe. When Olbermann lets loose, he is intelligent, courageous, and articulate -- the polar opposite of Glenn Beck, the smarmy bobblehead clown who also has a show that attempts to mix humor with news. One show is funny, the other comical. There's a differe ... |

| 'The Democrats' Global War on Weather' and 'Jack Bauer, Climatologist???' are the headlines conservatives are using to mock efforts by progressives to finance a National Intelligence Estimate to study global warming. As but one example, a 'ferocious drought and famine' were the driving forces behind the crisis in Darfur, ... |

| Last week the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ran part one of a two-part series on how Cuba survived without oil after the fall of the Soviet Union. (Not technically true -- there was oil, just far too little of it.) The next part runs this Sunday and has to do with the redefinition of Cuban medicine in the post-oil world. It's all very fascinating, and it's produced by one of our national treasures, David Suzuki. But it's had me thinking once more about the likely res ... |
