No Can Do On aerosols |

Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Love the column. Keep up the great stuff! A question: My co-workers and I are suspicious of buying spray cans, even though we know they no longer contain CFCs. We suspect that aerosol cans contain HCFCs -- hydrochlorofluorocarbons -- which are proving to be dangerous as well, this time as greenhouse gases. Do all aerosol cans contain HCFCs? Can we trust a "green" product like an essential-oils-and-water-based deodorizer that c ... |

The Ozone Diet Ozone hole bigger this year than last |

16 Sep 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 3:58 PM on 16 Sep 2008 Happy International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer! Sad to say, the hole that plagues the ozone is already bigger this year than last, and will likely not max out in size until late September or early October. As of Saturday, the hole measured 10.4 million square miles; last year, at its biggest, it was 9.7 million square miles. While a gash bigger than North America might seem somewhat concerning ... |

| Photo: Jeff Mo There was an interesting post a while ago about the havoc created by compressed air cans -- you know, the ones you use to dust off your keyboard. Who knew that they were full of intensely powerful greenhouse gases? I sure didn't, but thanks to Eric de Place, now I do -- so I make myself insufferable whenever I see someone with one, and I point out how easy it is to just turn the keyboard over and knock the crumbs out. But whenever I see a pallet of ... |

| Posted at 10:27 AM on 02 Jun 2008 Asthma inhalers containing ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons will be phased out by the end of 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday. The phaseout of CFCs is required under the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty that the United States actually deigned to sign on to. Alternatives to CFC inhalers use hydrofluoroalkanem as a propellant; HFA inhalers may taste differe ... |

Lethal injections Science: Geo-engineering scheme damages the ozone layer |

| Science has published a major new study, 'The Sensitivity of Polar Ozone Depletion to Proposed Geoengineering Schemes' ($ub. req'd). The study finds: The large burden of sulfate aerosols injected into the stratosphere by the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 cooled Earth and enhanced the destruction of polar ozone in the subsequent few years. The continuous injection of sulfur into the stratosphere has been suggested as a 'geoengineering' scheme to counteract global w ... |

| Posted at 2:57 PM on 22 Apr 2008 Short-term exposure to smog is clearly linked to premature deaths, a National Academy of Sciences report has concluded. Some Bush administration officials have claimed that the link between ground-level ozone and health is, well, hazy: when the U.S. EPA was determining acceptable air standards for ozone last month, officials in the Office of Management and Budget claimed there was "considerable uncertainty" of a ... |

| Posted at 10:39 AM on 14 Mar 2008 President Bush interfered at the last minute to weaken the recently announced U.S. ozone standards, according to EPA documents. On Wednesday, the EPA set both the "public health" standard (how much ozone is in one place at one time) and the "public welfare" standard (consideration of the long-term effect of ozone) at the same level. Before Bush interfered, the agency planne ... |

U.S. Mayors Climate Conference: Gore VI Gore: What we can learn from the ozone hole |

| Kelly Fergusson, mayor of Menlo Park, Calif. ("investment capital of the world!"), asks: we've overcome huge environmental challenges like DDT and the ozone hole before. What can we learn from those successes? First, Gore causes me to do a double take by saying that his mother used to read to he and his sister from Silent Spring. Jeebus! I guess that explains a lot. However, he knows more about the ozone fight. And boy does he know about it -- here he laun ... |

Holes in the ozone theory What the ozone hole tells us about the science of climate change |
Andrew Dessler |

| The atmospheric sciences community is excitedly discussing new results that potentially cast doubt on our understanding of the chemistry of the Antarctic ozone hole. The ozone hole is formed when two molecules of chlorine monoxide react with each other to form what is known as the chlorine dimer, ClOOCl, and that molecule is subsequently blasted apart by sunlight to release the chlorine atoms. New results suggest that this reaction is actually much slower than previo ... |

Hydrochlorofluorocarbons, or HCFCs, emerged in the 1990s as a less-ozone-damaging alternative to CFCs, which did truly nasty things to the ozone layer. But HCF ... |
