Doesn't anyone know how to play this game? Unilateral drilling deal is bad politics |
Gar Lipow |
07 Aug 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Joe Romm seems to think Obama's public support for drilling is smart politics, getting something for nothing. Romm is one of the smartest policy guys out there, but I think he has missed a key point on the politics here. Supporting drilling is a way of reaching out to low-information voters. But low-information voters don't make up their minds based on policy details; they make up their minds based on symbolism and perception of candidate gestalt. For Obama to say 'Dril ... |

When all you have is a Krauthammer, everything looks like a nail Drilling more in the U.S. won't avert any environmental damage from drilling overseas |
David Roberts |
07 Aug 2008 |
Gristmill |
| I was planning on ignoring this column from Charles Krauthammer -- always a good idea -- but two or three people have asked me about it now, so I guess it's worth saying something. Krauthammer's thesis is that when we put areas in the U.S. off limits to oil drilling, we push drilling into countries that have less sophisticated technology and fewer regulatory restrictions, thereby doing more environmental damage in the aggregate. In other words, by protecting the ... |

Dumb as a Layer of Rocks NYC officials fear natural-gas drilling would taint water supplies |
|
06 Aug 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 12:05 PM on 06 Aug 2008 New York City officials want to ban natural-gas drilling within a mile of six major upstate reservoirs for fear that the city's drinking water could become contaminated. Extracting gas from the Marcellus Shale rock layer, as some state regulators and lawmakers are pushing to do, would require shooting millions of gallons of water and unidentified chemicals underground to ... |

Matt Yglesias on the GOP drilling push Is drilling debate a repeat of the immigration debate? |
David Roberts |

Gristmill |
| Last week, Matt Yglesias finished his stint blogging for The Atlantic. Next week he starts blogging for the Center for American Progress. In between he's taking a week off -- the first time, according to Matt, that he's gone more than 24 hours without blogging in over four years. We don't want Matt's head exploding from holding its opinions in, so in the interest of relieving the pressure, here's something he sent along about the drilling kerfuffle: So here's a thou ... |

Drumming up outrage Are Obama's energy panders as bad as McCain's? |
David Roberts |
06 Aug 2008 |
Gristmill |
| I think Kevin Drum is being too hard on Obama here. Obama and the entire Democratic Party are getting killed on energy right now. The pressure to do something is extraordinary. Obama is looking for concessions that can take some of the heat off without giving away the game, and in terms of concessions, opening the SPR and taxing windfall profits are two of the least offensive. You can dispute the political calculation -- maybe he should have doubled down and bet big ... |

Something for nothing Since offshore oil is de minimis, why shouldn't Obama and the Dems make a deal? Part 1 |
Joseph Romm |
06 Aug 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Getting something for nothing is always a good idea. Kudos to Senator Obama and other progressives for understanding this. The key questions are: How much of a 'nothing' is ending the congressional moratorium on offshore drilling? How much of a 'something' can progressives get by way of a serious effort to end our oil addiction once and for all? Right now, it seems like conservatives are willing to hold their breath until they turn blue in the face before the ... |

| Originally posted at the Wonk Room. In eastern Pennsylvania yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) repeatedly argued, 'We need to drill here and we need to drill now.' His invocation of the slogan of Newt Gingrich's right-wing 527 corporation, American Solutions for Winning the Future (ASWF), was coupled with the following call for Congress to 'come back to town and come back to work': Congress should come back into session, and I'm willing to come off the campaign tr ... |

Our modern-day Eris House Republicans' magical thinking on oil prices |
David Roberts |
05 Aug 2008 |

| Wow. House Republicans are now saying that their hissy fit cum frat party on the floor is lowering the price of oil. Not for the first time, I have to wonder: do they believe this? Do they really indulge in this kind of magical thinking? The oil price issue is an interesting political case. It's immensely influential in our daily economic life, but we have virtually no idea why it behaves the way it does. Oil is like the gods were for Greeks -- omnipresent, looming, ... |

| Many in the environmental community are annoyed by Barack Obama's change of position on offshore drilling, even while they applaud his comprehensive energy plan. | As you contemplate the House Republican spectacle today, wherein they protest the "Democrat five-week vacation" in the face of high gas prices, keep a few things in mind. The 109th Congress -- the first session of Bush's second term -- worked the least, and accomplished the least, of any Congress since the original do-nothing Congress of 1948. The Republicans totally botched it when they ran the place. Meanwhile, the 110th has worked its tail off, in the fa ... |

| Obama is taking lots of heat for his softening on offshore drilling. I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it's extremely important to get the renewable tax credits passed, and Republicans have made it very clear they won't allow that to happen unless they get some drilling. As usual, Dems don't have the votes to overcome united Republican opposition, so the choice is to let the credits go down in flames -- and get tagged as ineffectual on the most hot-potato political ... |

Another four of the 18 billion is in the Eastern Gulf off of Florida, which ... |
