| Another day, another Whitman editorial boosting nukes. At least this one has a slightly better disclaimer: Christine Todd Whitman is the former governor of New Jersey and EPA administrator. She is the CASEnergy Coalition co-chair. The CASEnergy Coalition is an advocacy group that believes greater use of nuclear energy is critical to a U.S. energy policy. I guess if my organization was created at the behest of the nuclear industry, with money from the nuclear indu ... |

| Here's yet another op-ed from Christie Whitman cheerleading for nuclear power. To get a sense of the bad faith that infuses the whole thing, check out this paragraph: Of course, we could buy energy-saving appliances or drive fuel-efficient cars. We can recycle cans, bottles, and newspapers. We can even plant carbon-absorbing trees. But, no matter how much we may wish they would, these acts by themselves won't satisfy our energy demands. To do that, we need a di ... |

Costs soar for new nuclear power plants Strict safety guidelines cause construction delays at nuclear plants in Finland and Taiwan |

| Bloomberg has a very long article on the troubles plaguing Finland's Olkiluoto-3, 'the first nuclear plant ordered in Western Europe since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.' The plant has been delayed two years thanks to 'flawed welds for the reactor's steel liner, unusable water-coolant pipes and suspect concrete in the foundation.' It is also more than 25 percent over its 3 billion euro ($4 billion) budget. The article notes: If Finland's experience is any guide, ... |

| Posted at 9:11 AM on 06 Sep 2007 A federal judge poured cold water on the U.S. government's plans to build a nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain in Nevada this week -- or, more accurately, he left the feds high and dry. The Department of Energy has been seeking 8 million gallons of state-controlled water to drill test holes at Yucca Mountain; the state of Nevada, which wants to be rid of the dump, has said no ... |

| Radioactive Flyer International safeguards for nuclear materials are flawed, says report As nuclear energy enjoys a renaissance as a touted climate-change fix, a new report identifies significant flaws in the international safeguards meant to keep nuclear materials in reactors (as opposed to, say, the hands of illegal bomb makers). A two-year study by the Nonproliferation Policy Education Center concludes th ... |

Silence up north The coming nuclear expansion in Ontario is absent from election debate |

| There's a bit of a, whatchamacallit, an election coming down in Ontario. So far a number of issues have come up (e.g. schools), but the governing Liberals' plan to increase nuclear power construction in Toronto isn't one of them. It's a shame, because a number of recent articles in the Toronto Star show how this plan is being undermined before it's even gotten off the ground. First of all, there's the problem that the existing reactors are delivering su ... |

| We Put the Unclear in Nuclear Potentially deadly uranium spill in Tennessee kept secret As part of its model for a newer, more relevant form of democracy in the 21st century, the U.S. government in 2004 clamped down on the public's access to information on all things nuclear, for so-called national-security reasons. | This is a very, very big deal. If nukes have to go offline just when you need them most, that's a huge monkey wrench in plans for a nuclear resurgence. Given that this much-discussed (if less observed) resurgence centers on precisely those states most likely to suffer crippling heat waves, this is a huge problem for investors. The last thing anyone wants after dropping two big ones ($2B) on a nuke plant is to have to buy juice at more than $100/mWh on the spot market during a h ... |

IMHO, the strongest stuff comes at the bottom: The accelerating threat of global warming requires innovation and may demand risk-taking, but there are better options than nuclear power. A combination of energy-efficiency measures, renewable power like wind and solar, and decentralized power generators are already producing more energy worldwide than nuclear power plants. Their use is expa ... |

| News today that a quake has caused a fire at a nuke plant in Japan follows revelations of operator error that could have caused an accident at the 1,316 MW Krummel reactor in Germany, owned by Vattenfall Europe. Then Vattenfall tried to cover up what happened. I learned of this at SolarFest this weekend ... |
