Friday music blogging: Josh Ritter A perfectly wrought love song for an Autumn weekend |
David Roberts |
05 Oct 2007 |
Gristmill |
| It's been a great year for music. In addition to fantastic new albums from Cloud Cult, Modest Mouse, Okkervil River, and Band of Horses, there's the latest from everyone's favorite "new Dylan," Josh Ritter. Ritter's talent for marrying hooky melodies with knotty, literate lyrics has won him some passionate fans -- more than one Gristie is nursing a crush (or ma ... |

Friday music blogging: Band of Horses A new track from the presumptive album of the year |
David Roberts |
28 Sep 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Listen Play "Is There a Ghost," by Band of Horses: I'm not sure I've ever witnessed an album embraced so unreservedly and immediately by so many indie fans as Everything All the Time, the 2006 Sub Pop debut from Band of Horses. Three of the founding members -- Ben Bridwell, Matt Brooke, and Creighton Barrett -- were in the "quiet core" band Carissa's Wierd, but nothing about that whispery, mildly div ... |

Friday music blogging: John Vanderslice A sad, paranoid tune to haunt you over the weekend |
David Roberts |
21 Sep 2007 |
Gristmill |
| John Vanderslice is a Bay Area singer-songwriter, once with the band mk Ultra but now a solo artist. He also occasionally helps produce albums in the much-acclaimed recording studio he founded, Tiny Telephone. The studio uses only analog instruments and recording, but Vanderslice dirties the sound up with tons of distortion and effects. He calls it "dirty hi-f ... |

Friday music blogging: Stephen Fretwell Because Dylanesque never goes out of style |
David Roberts |
14 Sep 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Listen Play 'Coney,' by Stephen Fretwell: I know next to nothing about Stephen Fretwell aside from his amusingly-appropriate-for-a-guitarist name. I stumbled across his album a couple weeks back and it's been growing on me. He's your basic Dylanesque singer-songwriter -- the nearest analogue that I can think of on the current scene is Josh Ritter. If you like pleasant acoustic tunes, check out Fretwell's new album Man On the Ro ... |

Friday music blogging: The Apples in Stereo A new theme song for Gristmill |
David Roberts |
07 Sep 2007 |
Gristmill |
| I've found a theme song for Gristmill! The Apples in Stereo are 15-year veterans of the Elephant Six collective down in Georgia -- chipper lo-fi psych pop stuff. This is from their new album New Magnetic Wonder. I've never been a huge follower of that scene, but I like this new album well enough, and this song just seems apt. |

24 Aug 2007 |

| Listen Play 'Moneymaker,' by Rilo Kiley: Rilo Kiley is at the center of the Hip Indie universe, which predisposes some people to dislike them and others to love them uncritically. (Happily, your music blogger falls in neither camp.) Singer Jenny Lewis (like fellow RK fronter Blake Sennett, a former child TV star) is not only a fashion icon, not only cute as a button, but is a friend and collaborator to virtually every litera ... |

| If you happen to be perusing the newest issue of Jazz Times -- available on newsstands! -- flip on over to the Gearhead section and check out the ace review of the Yamaha CP300 Stage Piano. It's written by a young piano prodigy who's tearing up the D.C. jazz scene. You can hear some of his music here, and buy some of it here, though note that a new album is in the works and will likely be released around the end of the year. |

Don't go to BP Amoco! And don't piss off Pearl Jam |
Sarah van Schagen |
21 Aug 2007 |
Gristmill |
| BP's sludge dumpage into Lake Michigan has a whole mess of people pissed off. Including green-leaning band Pearl Jam, who performed an angry li'l ditty at this year's Lollapalooza festival. The lyrics are pretty simple; sing it with me: "Don't go to BP Amoco!" |

Friday music blogging: Jens Lekman Classic pop for a summer weekend |
David Roberts |
17 Aug 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Listen Play 'The Opposite of Hallelujah,' by Jens Lekman: Today we bring you a Swedish singer-songwriter named Jens Lekman. On the surface, Lekman's music is a bit of a throwback: mannered, melodic, occasionally orchestral pop, delivered with a precise baritone. It wouldn't be out of place alongside Frank Sinatra. But listen a little closer and you hear a deadpan wit, a post-ironic self-effacement that feels quite of-the-moment ... |

Let it all out Complaints Choir looking for members |
Kate Sheppard |
16 Aug 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Got good chords? Got stuff to bitch about? The first official U.S.-based Complaints Choir is forming in Chicago, and they'll be debuting on Nov. 3. The Complaints Choir is performance art -- people send in their complaints about life, the world, the environment, whatever's pissing them off, and then everyone gets together and makes a song out of them. Think the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for cynics, or at least people who are fed up with all the crap. A lot of the comp ... |

The Ditty Bops A green band that's really green |
Adam Browning |
13 Aug 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Last week, headed to the Lanesplitter for a Tune-Up, quite by accident I ended up seeing the Ditty Bops at the Freight and Salvage.I'm glad I did. The music was sweet and smart and catchy. But music aside, the show was eye-opening. Bono, step aside: Here's the new standard for what it means for musicians to engage in activism. At Vote Solar, we are periodically invited to table at shows where big name acts have decided to incorporate an activism component to ... |

Friday music blogging: Gonzales A quiet, soothing tune for the end of a long week |
David Roberts |
10 Aug 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Listen Play 'The Tourist,' by Gonzales: Wow, I sure am glad it's Friday. I'm exhausted. Not the kind of exhausted where you want music that will re-energize you, but the kind of exhausted where you want something nice and soothing to help you turn off and unload the week's worries. Solo Piano, an album by an artist known cryptically as Gonzales, is that kind of music. (It's also, incidentally, my go-to early morning ease-in ... |

27 Jul 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Listen Play 'Catastrophe and the Cure,' by Explosions in the Sky: You thought I forgot! This week's song is from a fantastic band out of Austin, Texas called Explosions in the Sky. They play in a style that has somewhat unfortunately been dubbed "post rock," though the band, like most bands stuck with the label, hates it. The prefer plain old "rock." What sets the genre apart is that it's instrumental (no v ... |

Black-eyed Peas: Live Earth edition Their eco-song doesn't suck. Too much |
Sarah van Schagen |
27 Jul 2007 |
Gristmill |
| I have been remiss in my music-related reportage, and I apologize. I had heard prior to Live Earth (which was three weeks ago) that, like Madonna, the Black-eyed Peas would be writing a song specifically for the spectacle. But I never updated you as to how that worked out. Then, today, thanks to my "media hound" colleague, I found out that unlike Madonna's song, this one does not suck. As much. Check out the video for "SOS" here. |

| More from James Hansen's email: I was invited to go on stage at "Live Earth" at the Meadowlands, between Jon Bon Jovi and Smashing Pumpkins performances. I agreed to this, on the condition that I could bring my grandchildren, Sophie and Connor. I assumed it would be like last year when I appeared with Al Gore before a young audience, with a rather impromptu discussion of global warming. Bad assumption. When I asked "Where's Al?", I was told th ... |

Friday music blogging: Wilco From the Wilco demographic |

20 Jul 2007 |

| Listen Play 'Walken,' by Wilco: A coworker who shall remain nameless is fond of mocking me for my love of Wilco. Her theory is that Wilco's fan base is overwhelmingly dominated by "whiny white guys in their early 30s." I'm afraid I fall squarely in that demographic, and though Wilco does have broad appeal ... the theory is not entirely fanciful. So anyway, this one's for my peeps. Global warming: That's a rap! Young rappers say 'peace out' to skeptics |

| 'Glaciers melting, waters rising, sky is storming, global warming!' That's how a rap written by a group of Vermont teens begins. And they hope it ends with local lawmakers taking action on climate change.
