On Wednesday, I leave for Salzburg, Austria, where -- thanks to the generosity of a Knight Foundation Fellowship -- I will be attending a session of the Salzburg Global Seminar on "Combating Climate Change at Local and Regional Levels: Sustainable Strategies, Renewable Energy." I am of course excited about the substance of the event, ...

Last night I finally got around to watching Once, the little Irish indie flick that got so much critical acclaim last year. It is, in fact, a remarkable film -- worthy of the buzz. I'm not sure what you'd call it. A "musical"? Not exactly -- the movie's entirely naturalistic. There's no spontaneous breaking out into song and d ...

Or how they can help stop global warming? Or how can they fix the wipers on their ... |

Wow, I guess I underestimated my ability to influence coverage here at Grist. If you haven't noticed, environmental media has been getting a lot of play around here lately. So, this week I'm simply going to provide a roundup of green-media topics appearing on Grist (and elsewhere): More Environmental Film Last week I mentioned there'd be more on environmental film festivals. I didn't lie. If you missed it, check out Paul Henderson's report, Feelin' Movie, which discu ...

Last weekend I abandoned my cot in the supply closet at the Grist office to get out of Seattle for a spell and see the world. Specifically, I went to help celebrate a friend's birthday down in Eugene, Oregon, and go to a Clumsy Lovers show in Corvallis. Sadly, the band's bass player had strep, but I did discover that Corvallis' Sunnyside Up bakery makes a tasty and cleverly-named treat called the 'you're doin' a heckuva job brownie (with raspberries).' Hopefully a por ...
