What do oil lobbyists think about drilling for oil?

| Here, MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell discusses McCain's plan to drill, drill, drill with RNC deputy chairman and McCain supporter Frank Donatelli: What Mitchell didn't tell you: Before joining the RNC, Donatelli was a registered lobbyist. For whom, you ask? What type of clients? Three guesses! Oh, fine, you got it the first time: ExxonMobil Corp. and Dominion Resources. But why would MSNBC viewers need to know that? |

You can't be too rich or too dirty Fossil interests plow money into Congress |

| Rich and thin is passé. What's hot now is rich and dirty. Why is a smart energy and climate policy so elusive for this country? In three words -- money, money, money. The nation's energy bill is now about a trillion dollars. That means the super-rich fossil fuel companies have enormous profits they can spend on lobbying to ensure their continued dominance. How much? Jeff Goodell has the answer here: In the first quarter of 2008, Big Coal's new front gr ... |

| Million here, million there, pretty soon you're talking about real money: Peabody Investments Corp., a subsidiary of coal producer Peabody Energy Corp., spent nearly $1.3 million in the first quarter to lobby on issues related to the coal industry, according to a disclosure report. The company lobbied Congress on legislation involving renewable energy and energy independence, promotion of coal-to-liquid fuel, global warming, mine communications technology, tax cr ... |

| Chapter 1, courtesy of our friends at Greenwire ($ub req'd): The coal industry is spending tens of millions of dollars to cement support among members of Congress and the top presidential candidates in an effort to fight critics of coal-fired power and is also appealing directly to the voters those politicians need. Why, you ask? Turn to Chapter 2, this time from The New York Times: 'Stymied in their plans to build coal-burning power plants, American utilit ... |

The agricultural lobby vs. the public interest, part 5435 Factory farms fight to avoid reporting on toxic emissions |
Jason D Scorse |
26 Feb 2008 |
Gristmill |
| This article in the WaPo shows yet again how insidious the agricultural lobby in this country is, and how we need leadership that will take it on. This time it's the factory farms fighting laws that mandate that they provide information on their emission of toxic gases (from animal waste). Breaking the power of the agricultural lobby should be a top priority for the environmental community; at every turn it fights for corporate welfare and against environmental progre ... |

| Speaking of reasons climate legislation is going to be impossible this year: It's good to see the Washington Post pick up on the coal industry's massive lobbying effort. The focus is Americans for Balanced Energy Choices (ABEC), which we've discussed before. WaPo's Steven Mufson uncovered a few details. Right now, ABEC is spending $1.3 million for ads in Iowa, Nevada, and South Carolina (not coincidentally, early primary states). It's also deploying street teams on th ... |

The dinosaur lobby weighs in on the energy bill Fossil-friendly biz groups send letter to Senate requesting reversal of Supreme Court decision |
David Roberts |
07 Dec 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Today, an extraordinary letter about the energy bill was sent to the U.S. Senate by a coalition of business groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, oil, gas, forestry, and mining lobbying groups. With what can only be described as brass balls, they are asking the Senate to reverse the Supreme Court's decision in Massachusetts v. EPA. They say "the energy legislation must contain explicit language clarifying that nothing in this bill can be construe ... |

| Remarkable: The bill is being circulated by Senator Jeff Bingaman, Democrat of New Mexico, chairman of the Senate Energy Committee and the energy bill's lead author. Until this week, Mr. Bingaman had opposed big subsidies for coal-based fuels, saying that each new production plant would cost billions of dollars and that the economic uncertainties posed risks for taxpayers. But in what could be an effort to fend off demands from coal-state lawmakers for bigger subsidies ... |

| Senator Bingaman is with the majority of Americans in wanting more renewable energy. Accordingly, he has authored legislation that would require utilities to increase renewables in their portfolio to 15 percent by 2020. Senator Domenici is with the craven few who don't want this to happen. Accordingly, he has authored an amendment to redefine qualifying renewables to include nukes and coal. So tricky! But we are on to him. The vote on Domenici's amendment will ... |

| It's official: Richard "Dick" Pombo (R-Nowhere) will not be attempting to reclaim the House seat he lost to Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.). The nation may breathe a sigh of relief. (McNerney's probably effed anyway, though -- after all, it's still an extremely conservative district.) You may recall that upon losing Pombo went almost immediately through the revolving door to scummy PR and lobbying firm Pac/West. As that did not satisfy his insatiable hunger ... |

| Citizens from Appalachia were at the UN's meeting on sustainable energy policy this week to challenge the clean-coalers, and were received really well by the other delegates. Coal advocates were hard-put to refute the evidence that coal kills communities. Now the effort moves to D.C. from May 12-16 for the 2nd Annual Mountaintop Removal Week lobbying effort. Organized by Appalachian Voices, the effort will advance the Clean Water Protection Act toward passage and he ... |

Reid gears up to defend stupid mining law Sigh |
David Roberts |

| The 1872 Mining Law is evil. It gives mining companies cheap and privileged access to public land, and makes it virtually impossible for anyone, including the gov't, to stop them from grabbing it (yet another cost of mining that gets offloaded onto the public). Attempts to get rid of or update the absurdly archaic and destructive statute have long been blocked by legislators from mining states. Among them is Harry Reid (D-Nev.), now the majority leader in the Senate, ... |

Let's all go to the lobby Exxon Mobil hikes spending, big time |

| Perhaps fearing the coming crunch of climate and energy legislation, oil giant Exxon Mobil more than doubled their reported lobbying expenditures in 2006 to $14.5 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. This blows their previous year's total of $7.14 million and next-highest-spender Chevron's $7.5 million out of the water. |
