Pathetic Justice Supreme Court slashes Exxon's punitive damages for Valdez oil spill |
|
25 Jun 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 10:37 AM on 25 Jun 2008 ExxonMobil is off the hook for billions in punitive damages related to the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. In 1994, the oil giant was ordered to pay $5 billion in punitive damages. In 2006, that amount was cut to $2.5 billion. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court slashed the amount once again, to $507.5 million. By a 5-3 vote (Exxon stockholder Samuel Alito sat out), the court reasoned ... |

The Road to Recovery Commuting can drive you crazy -- no, literally |
|
09 Jun 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 3:04 PM on 09 Jun 2008 Think your commute drives you crazy? Well, you might be right. In a culture so accustomed to being on-the-go, sitting immobile in traffic for hours each day can take a toll on mental health, researchers say. "If you're stuck in traffic, there's a feeling of being out of control," says psychologist Laura Pinegar, who says she's hearing more and more complaints of traffic anxiety in her ... |

'You just gave my speech' Drilling for fossil fuels and subsidizing nuclear power: McCain energy policy |
David Roberts |
09 Jun 2008 |
Gristmill |
| McCain reveals the heart of his energy policy: McCain was more gung-ho about nuclear power and expanded domestic drilling for oil and natural gas. When a donor in Richmond summed up his advice as, 'nuclear, and drill wherever we've got it,' McCain responded: 'You just gave my speech. Thank you, my friend. |

James and the giant lie Oklahoma senator makes stuff up, wastes time in climate change debate |
Kate Sheppard |
04 Jun 2008 |
Gristmill |
| James Inhofe (R-Okla.), the Senate's leading climate change denier, had plenty of kooky and alarmist things to say in yesterday's debate over climate change legislation. Think Progress has video of one of his wing-nuttiest contributions to the discussion, in which he lies about Al Gore, An Inconvenient Truth, and the IPCC: Yep, the same IPCC that shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Gore. |

| In today's daily action alert from the Family Research Council, President Tony Perkins bemoans the fact that the Senate is wasting time talking about climate change when the gays are still running around getting married willy-nilly: Now, fresh off a holiday weekend in which most families paid $4 a gallon to drive to neighborhood barbecues, American patience has worn thin. Imagine the frustration this week, as Congress returned to work -- not on judges, marriage, or ... |

News flash: Newton's laws were 'overthrown' Bizarre talking points of WaPo columnist Krauthammer |
Joseph Romm |
31 May 2008 |

| Sir Isaac Newton is one of the towering geniuses in all human history. Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer? Not so much. Krauthammer has written a classic anti-science screed, 'Carbon Chastity: The First Commandment of the Church of the Environment,' that recasts many favorite anti-scientific denier memes in odd terms. You still hear and see all of these today, so let me touch on a few of them. And as I will discuss in Part 2, the article is most useful be ... |

Gristmill |
| Once your power source has reached, say, 10 percent of the electricity grid, let alone 20 percent, it should be time to cut the cord to government funding. Yet after more than $70 billion dollars in direct subsidies, billions more in insurance subsidies, plus another $13 billion available through the energy policy act of 2005, Sen. McCain and others still feel that climate legislation must not merely create a price for carbon dioxide that would advantage all carbon-free ... |

| So an industry CEO tells E&E News that nuclear is the only non-carbon baseload power (not!) and that therefore nuclear is our only future and since the United States does such a great job of dealing with low-level radioactive waste, we should become the world's repository.
