| UCLA students in Prof. Sherman's 'ENVIRON 188: Effective Methods of Social Change' class got quite a surprise yesterday when Larry and Laurie David showed up to lecture about the climate crisis. One student in particular, Erick Tarula (pictured at left with Larry David; photo: Getty Images, courtesy mtvU), was even more surprised when he was handed the keys to the Prius Larry drives on Curb Your Enthusiasm. | Oh, this is just too good. The leader of the UK conservative party, David Cameron, has been bragging about his green credentials lately (remember, they're sane in the UK, so they demand that all their leaders have green cred), and urging other MPs to change their personal behavior to demonstrate green values. Oops: David Cameron was forced to backtrack on his personal green credentials yesterday by admitting that he traveled to work by bicycle not to cut ca ... |

| This is a bit far afield, perhaps, but the British press is reporting that new drivers in the UK will soon have to take an 'eco-driving' test in order to get their license. The UK initiative is modelled after a Dutch program that claims that smarter driving habits -- slower acceleration, less braking, lower top speeds -- can shave gas consumption by a third or more.Last year, after a brief (and undeserved) flap over they Toyota Prius's worse-than-advertised mi ... |

| Some California drivers are getting all steamed up that they have to share the carpool lanes with single-occupant hybrids, like the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic, under a new state program. Some of the complaints, of course, should be taken with a grain of salt. Said one fumer in an online discussion group: "These [drivers] barely go 65 mph and allow no one to pass them on the right... Talk about road rage!" Uh, dude, that's not road rage -- that's wh ... |

Plug-in hybrids go viral

| I'm not a big fan of flash animation. I am, however, a huge fan of plug-in hybrids. Love trumps hate in this instance, so I urge you to check out Calcar.org's efforts to spread the word on the benefits of plug-in hybrids with this piece of viral marketing. If you make it to the end of the animation, there's a chance to sign a petition to automakers urging them to manufacture plug-ins. |

Consumer Reports backtracks

| Odograph will be happy to hear that Consumer Reports has admitted error: some hybrids save money after all. Including fuel savings and tax credits, Consumer Reports said, the Toyota Prius hybrid would save about $400 over five years and the Honda Civic hybrid would save about $300 compared with conventionally powered models. The magazine said it overestimated depreciation of the cars in arriving at its initial conclusion. I guess the millions thousan ... |

As you will learn from the length of the commercial, as well as the fact the car is on the 'wrong' side of the road, it is for UK audiences. Sigh ... Europeans do so many things so much better. Gas Mileage: Consumer Retorts Consumer Reports' real-world mpg figures make the Prius even more appealing |

| Consumer Reports recently claimed that EPA's vehicle ratings routinely overstate how fuel-efficient cars and trucks are in real-world driving. For standard cars and trucks, the magazine says, EPA's ratings overstate real-world fuel economy by 30 percent. But for small hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius, they claim that EPA overstates actual miles-per-gallon by a hefty 42 percent. (Ouch.) Now, I believe that there's reason to question Consumer Reports' figures. O ... |
