| The holiday season is upon us, and you know what that means: bajillions of crazed consumers seeking sales assistants full of cheer, good tidings of markdowns, and the joy of reaching the last TMX Elmo just before that little old lady in the wheelchair does. Boo-ty Call On Halloween |
Umbra Fisk |
30 Oct 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, What do you recommend handing out to the trick-or-treaters this Halloween? I would like to avoid the wasteful packaging and additives found in store-bought goodies. I'd bake my own treats, but I doubt parents would let their kids eat anything that's not individually sealed. How can I have an environmentally friendly Halloween? Robin Walla Walla, Wash. Dearest Robin, We are on the cusp of a most intriguing holiday, so I'm happy to ta ... |

The Grist List |
| By Sarah van Schagen and Katharine Wroth 16 Dec 2005 On the first day ... ... the Grist staff gave to me: the notion that Kwanzaa, Christmas, and Hanukkah are eco-holidays. Kwanzaa ("first fruits" in Swahili) has its roots in African harvest festivals. Christmas involves serious tree-hugging (thank the pagans for that). And Hanukkah celebrates squeezing every last drop from a tiny bit of oil. Photos: iStockphoto. On the second day ... ... the ... |

Moving Light Along On LED holiday lights |
Umbra Fisk |
07 Dec 2005 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Suppose I replace all my many old, tangled, not-so-efficient holiday lights with the newer LED lights. These are supposed to be better for the environment. What is the best way to dispose of my old lights? R-M Ottawa, Canada Dearest R-M, The LED lights are indeed better for the environment, and, since I'm frankly running out of winter holiday-related questions (see my previous work on Christmas trees, gift wrap, cand ... |

Daily Grist |
| It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Deforestation Take a few easy steps to stem the flood of holiday catalogs Judging by the fake-snow-and-forced-cheer displays popping up in stores, it's almost that time of year again: Time for overcrowded travel, bad TV specials, a deluge of dead trees, and heaps of precious gift catalogs through your mail slot. Greenies hope you'll celebrate the holidays this year by opting out ... |
