| Dear Umbra, We really enjoy the community aspect of trick-or-treating but we don't want to give out candy to the little ones, or toxic plastic Chinese toys. Two hundred kids come to our house every Halloween. How do we keep it green, safe, and economical? Jodi McMillian Charleston, W.Va. Dearest Jodi, Two hundred children? How did you keep it economical last year? Let's see, if you were to buy a bag of mini Snickers with 70 in the bag, a ... |

Dropping the Ball Times Square New Year's Eve ball goes green |
|
04 Oct 2007 |
News |
| Posted at 2:02 PM on 04 Oct 2007 The ball that drops in Times Square on New Year's Eve is -- say it with us now -- going green. This year, the 100th anniversary of the tradition, the fifth iteration of the ball will have an aluminum skeleton and be lit by energy-efficient LED lights. With 16 times as many lights, it will use half the wattage of the last ball. That's the power equivalent of 10 toasters toasting for six hours, for the ... |

Everything Auld is New Again On New Year's resolutions |
Umbra Fisk |
03 Jan 2007 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dearest Readers, Happy New Year! Welcome to 2007. Who knows what it will hold for us all. I hope you have a few parts of your year planned and have resolved to leave the rest up to chance, fate, and short-term impulses. As has become my tradition, I shall start the year with a few resolutions of my own. I just revisited my 2006 Grist resolution, which -- as part of a strange condom-related commentary on reduci ... |

Wrapper's Delight On wrapping creatively |
Umbra Fisk |
18 Dec 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Due to my procrastinating nature, I once again find myself in the position of having to wrap what seems like hundreds of gifts in wasteful wrapping paper, only to have it torn apart and thrown away the very next day. I'm a proponent of the "reduce, reuse, recycle" philosophy, but during the holidays, wrapping my gifts in the Sunday comics doesn't say "mindful conservationist" so much as it says &q ... |

14 Dec 2006 |
Daily Grist |
| Monsieur Heat Miser Europe's holiday spirit, shopping disrupted by global warming In the worst consequence of global warming yet, European retailers are fretting that consumers may be too warm to do their holiday shopping. "Christmas business lacks impetus as there is no Christmas spirit in warmer weather," laments Hubertus Pellengahr, a German retail association spokesperson. "Retail s ... |

Presents of Mind On holiday gifts for young folk |

13 Dec 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, I've read Grist's gift guide, but I didn't see very many ideas for youths and young children. On the other hand, I did like the idea of giving The Lorax, which was mentioned in one of your other responses. Do you have any other eco-friendly gift suggestions for my nieces and nephews for this Christmas? I want to encourage them to appreciate our natural environment, and besides, I figured it couldn't hurt if t ... |

| In every era the attempt must be made anew to wrest tradition away from a conformism that is about to overpower it. -- Walter Benjamin, "Theses on the Philosophy of History" Eat, drink, and be mindful.
