Quit recycling Celebrate Earth Day by ditching annoying green clichés |
Ashley Braun |

| I'm all about the three R's that have been the standby of every Earth Day since 1970: reduce, reuse, recycle. Got it. Even so, this Earth Day, I'm beseeching the world to do the unthinkable: stop recycling ... those annoying green clichés, that is. I think it's gee-golly-swell that environmental issues have started gaining such mainstream momentum recently, but if I read, see, or hear another overly trite use of 'It is/is not easy being green!' or 'An Inconvenient X, ... |

| Dearest Readers, I am back. My captors released me early this morning, and I have never been happier to walk somewhere in my life. All that driving gets one down, doesn't it? Big thanks to the more than 2,000 of you who donated to Grist to help secure my release. I am in your debt, even more so than usual. Thank you, thank you. Thank you. I'll remember you all when I earn millions from my tell-all book. (And if you haven't gotten arou ... |

Wrapper's Delight On wrapping creatively |
Umbra Fisk |
18 Dec 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Due to my procrastinating nature, I once again find myself in the position of having to wrap what seems like hundreds of gifts in wasteful wrapping paper, only to have it torn apart and thrown away the very next day. I'm a proponent of the "reduce, reuse, recycle" philosophy, but during the holidays, wrapping my gifts in the Sunday comics doesn't say "mindful conservationist" so much as it says &q ... |

What to do with your old Christmas tree Send it to the fishes. |
Sarah K. Burkhalter |

| I'm sure there are plenty of you out there who have not yet rid yourselves of your 'holiday tree' because you're lazy ... I mean, because you're beset by qualms about the eco-consequences of tree disposal. Never fear! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will take your old tree and send it to the fishes. Cast-off trees are submerged in man-made lakes to create 'natural' habitats for fish, including bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. Hee hee, crappie. The fish a ... |

Wrapture On wrapping paper |
Umbra Fisk |
10 Dec 2002 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Any suggestions on where to find recycled wrapping paper? I know the real environmental choice is to reuse stuff I have around the house, but sometimes newspaper, etc., just doesn't have the right look. Any ideas where I can find recycled/tree-free wrapping paper for the holiday season? I've been looking around (both online and off) but all I can find is rolls of brown packing paper. I want something a little more festive. Thanks, ... |
