| Ian McEwan. Photo: Eamon McCabe Booker Prize-winning British novelist Ian McEwan, now best known for Atonement, is at work on a new novel about climate change that will include 'extended comic stretches,' The Guardian reports. The unnamed work isn't due out for another two years, but McEwan read an excerpt to an audience in Wales on Sunday. The protagonist of the forthcoming novel is Nobel Prize-winning physicist Michael Beard, who aspires to save the planet, ... |

Confirmed it through the grapevine Brangelina drink to life on an organic vineyard |

| Back in August, we hinted at the possibility that Brad and Ange were looking to sample some eco-friendly wineries. But now we've heard official word (through the grapevine) that they've chosen a lovely organic variety in the south of France. The Jolie-Pitts have purchased Château Miraval, a 1,000-acre property featuring two swimming pools, two gyms, 20 fountains, a lake, a moat, and a lush organic vineyard. The $60 million estate also includes 35 bedrooms -- ... |

BP-powered no more

| Remember that new environmental blog at The New Republic that was "powered by BP"? Apparently it is no longer thus powered. As gratifying as it is, in a schadenfreudey sort of way, to see that other small media operations can be as dysfunctional as, er, some small media operations I'm familiar with. I'm glad this got settled quickly -- I really do think it will be a blog worth reading. (This post brought to you by Wal-Mart.) |

People Tree (ironically a very popular brand in Japan) has secured 300,000 Euros to help expand its line. Sofala Investments, the parent company of the African luxury label a.d. schwarz, will plant a tree this October and November at its forest reserve in Mozambique for every registered race participa ... |

Puzzle Peace Climate campaigners could have a shot at winning the Nobel Peace Prize |
|
05 Oct 2007 |
News |
| Posted at 6:59 AM on 05 Oct 2007 Word around the campfire is that climate campaigners Al Gore and Sheila Watt-Cloutier may be on the short list of nominees with a shot at landing this year's Nobel Peace Prize. The prestigious award -- to be announced Oct. 12 -- has traditionally been awarded to human-rights activists and peace advocates (except for that whole Henry Kissinger thing). In 2004, the Peace Prize comm ... |

| So a bunch of onetime Gore advisers and aides gathered for a meal last night: Among those longtime Gore loyalists who munched on a buffet of sandwiches and salmon at the [Gore friend and ally Peter] Knight home: Longtime powerhouse Dem fundraiser and Democratic National Committeeman Robert Zimmerman; Knight's wife, Gail Britton; Tom Hendrickson, the former North Carolina Democratic Party chair; Mary Pat Bonner, founder of the Bonner Group; Dr. Richard Boxer, ... |

| On the list of most environmentally unfriendly ways to avenge yourself on an ex-boyfriend, leaving the water in your tub running so it can flood your former squeeze's apartment sits pretty close to the top. But punishment-by-excessive-water-use is exactly what Lindsay Lohan allegedly wrought on Harry Morton last month. This, from TMZ.com: Lohan lives one floor above Harry Morton, son of Las Vegas mogul Peter Morton, who just sold the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Lin ... |

Gore campaign staff gathering? A fish story in the Telegraph |

| Update [2007-4-22 12:29:39 by David Roberts]: Gore's people deny it all. Figured. Friends of Al Gore have secretly started assembling a campaign team in preparation for the former American vice-president to make a fresh bid for the White House. So says Tim Shipman in the Telegraph. I suggest a high degree of skepticism. The story is built on leaks from two members of Gore's 2000 campaign team. They say they were approached by other former Gore staffers about whe ... |

| The funniest news lede I've read in a long time: Credit Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally with saving the leader of the free world from self-immolation. Apparently, our befuddled prez was about to stick an electrical plug into the hydrogen tank of a Ford hydrogen-electric plug-in hybrid. This act, if completed, would have generated Hindenburg-esque bad publicity and probably made Cheney our next president. (Eep!) To make the save, Mulally apparently 'violated all th ... |

| Al Gore recently gave his talk on global warming in Norway, to an audience that included one Ole Danbolt Mjoes. Mjoes, as you may know, is the head of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee -- though he insisted he was attending as a private citizen. He said Gore's message is "very important," and took part in a one-minute standing ovation. Reuters has more: 'I have Gore as a clear favorite,' said Stein Toennesson, head of the International Peace Research Ins ... |

How deep is Gore love?

| That Al Gore. Such a busy guy. Apparently, in between getting nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, stealing the show at the Oscars, and testifying before Congress, he's found time to heal a former Beatle's tender heart. This, from TMZ.com: While Heather Mills dances with the stars, soon-to-be-ex hubby Paul McCartney is getting hot and heavy with a new squeeze. The beleaguered Beatle has been spotted a lot lately with Sabrina Guinness, of, yes, the Guinness Stou ... |
