News |
| Posted at 10:56 AM on 14 Aug 2008 Americans are driving less, burning less gasoline, and buying fewer cars, and the feds have the stats to prove it. New numbers show that Americans drove 4.7 percent less in June 2008 than they did in June 2007, shaving off some 12.2 billion miles. For those keeping track at home, that makes a total 53.2 billion fewer miles driven between Nov. 2007 and June 2008 than in that eight-month ... |

|
01 Aug 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 1:42 PM on 01 Aug 2008 High gas prices are helping Greyhound and other intercity buses shun their loser-cruiser reputation. Ridership on the U.S. intercity bus system fell by a third between 1960 and 1980, by half again by 2006 -- but jumped 13 percent in the past two years. "People are starting to feel good about stepping aboard a bus," says transportation expert Joseph Schwieterman. "Many see it ... |

|
25 Jun 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 12:20 PM on 25 Jun 2008 For decades, Americans have trickled steadily out of cities into suburbia -- and then into exurbia. But with gas prices high and likely to stay there, the wallet-conscious are now poised to trickle back in. In 2003, the average suburban household spent $1,422 on gasoline annually; in April 2008, that had leaped to $3,196 per year. "Before it was 'we spend too much time dri ... |

|
16 Jun 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 1:20 PM on 16 Jun 2008 With gas prices rising, more people are busing, scooting, biking -- and riding the electric scooter we all love to mock. Yes, sales of the nerdarific Segway have risen to an all-time high, as more folks deny transportation fashion in the interest of gas-saving comfort. The two-wheeled, electric scooters get up to 25 miles per charge, have a top speed of about 12.5 miles per hour, and have, just once, caused the Lea ... |

Great Scoot! Scooter ridership zooms as gas prices rise |
|
03 Jun 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 4:21 PM on 03 Jun 2008 For reasons both environment- and wallet-related, motor scooter ridership is zooming (along with transit and bike ridership, natch). Between 1997 and 2007, annual sales of new scooters jumped from 12,000 to 131,000. Scooter sales in the first three months of 2008 were up 24 percent over the same time period last year, and sellers are having trouble keeping scooters in stock. But engine-powered two-wheelers ... |
