| In Salzburg, one person made -- and several people subsequently reiterated -- the point that all this work and struggle on behalf of future generations should be undertaken in a spirit of joy. It's the human capacity to transcend circumstances, to love and laugh and be goofy together no matter how oppressive the context, no matter how irrational it may seem, that makes it all worth doing. And with that maudlin intro, I give you a video that makes the point much more ef ... |

Reel Funny An interview with climate mockumentary filmmaker Randy Olson |
Erik Hoffner |
10 Jul 2008 |
Grist Feature |
| Randy Olson became a filmmaker after fifteen years as a marine biologist, so the perspective he brings to the craft is rooted in science -- but blended with his own irreverent humor. His hilarious new film on global warming is a perfect example. Randy Olson. After quitting his university job in 1993, Olson went to film school and teamed up with one of his heroes, renowned marine ecologist Jeremy J ... |

| The Onion's green issue is out, and it's a doozy -- from eco-junkies recycling ('If you come across an old needle lying around, by all means, use it'), to crediting Working Assets' long-distance with the planet's survival, to an opinion piece by a smokestack ('Soon, my tummy starts to feel full. And when I feel like I can't hold any more, out pop the wonderful clouds!'). They even get in a poke at Steven Johnson! Priceless. |

Sizzle this summer New mockumentary on climate science, dialogue, and societal change is opening soon |
Erik Hoffner |
09 Jun 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Filmmaker Randy Olson has just completed Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy, a hilarious new mockumentary thickly peopled with real life climate scientists, activists, skeptics, and a rollicking plot-line that could bring a lot more people into the global warming tent. I found it refreshing and a good follow-up to the Gore movie, because it's not so much about the scientists or the celebrities telling us why we should care. Instead, it's fun, watchable, and about real peop ... |

Quit recycling Celebrate Earth Day by ditching annoying green clichés |
Ashley Braun |
22 Apr 2008 |
Gristmill |
| I'm all about the three R's that have been the standby of every Earth Day since 1970: reduce, reuse, recycle. Got it. Even so, this Earth Day, I'm beseeching the world to do the unthinkable: stop recycling ... those annoying green clichés, that is. I think it's gee-golly-swell that environmental issues have started gaining such mainstream momentum recently, but if I read, see, or hear another overly trite use of 'It is/is not easy being green!' or 'An Inconvenient X, ... |

King's comments were immediately pounced upon -- not by feminists, but by Ferrari owners, who protested that their vehicles spew le ... |

Buzz Kill On Jell-O shots |

Ask Umbra |
| Greetings, A very important discussion among my colleagues this week: is it better to purchase reusable, petroleum-based products (plastic) or to use paper disposables? Specifically, we're talking about Jell-O shot cups. A recent (and brilliant) invention is this little plastic shot cup with a twistable ring inside. Ostensibly, a flick of the wrist will free even the most stubborn Jell-O shot and allow hours of fun. Some of my friends have argu ... |

NASA chief Griffin stands by his Luddite remarks -- as space agency guts climate science work Unfortunate |

The Associated Press reports that Griffin 'regrets airing his personal views about global warming during a recent radio interview.' That is, he apologized for speaking his mind. Sad. RealClimate humor Who says scientists aren't funny? |
Gar Lipow |
15 May 2007 |

| RealClimate has an extended satire against climate denier use of false correlation=causation logic to argue for solar cycles as the main cause of global warming. As humor with extended charts and co-efficients of correlation go, it is quite funny. However, I must admit that an exchange between two commenters on the post was much funnier: James: CO2 has an insulating effect -- we know this because people have measured it. Humans have been putting more CO2 in the a ... |
