CAFE news; Obama's speech The logjam is breaking |
David Roberts |
07 May 2007 |
Gristmill |
| It appears that after a long period of haggling -- involving the bizarre tableau of Republican Ted Stevens pushing for tougher regulations -- the Senate Commerce Committee is ready to cough up a bill that would raise CAFE standards to 35mpg by 2019 (35mpg across the fleet, including light trucks). The committee is expected to vote through the proposal tomorrow; that would lead to the first floor vote on CAFE since 2002, and if passed, the first fuel-economy boost in ... |

| Will Johnson Stand Firm on Emissions? EPA finalizes renewable-fuel standard, evaluates emissions ruling With much fanfare, the Bush administration has finalized a renewable-fuel standard for cars and trucks. The rule, mandated by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, requires 4.7 billion gallons of motor fuel -- a little more than 4 percent of the total produced -- to come from renewable sources this year, increasing to 7.5 ... |

Ask a Brokeass: We get around On eco-friendly transport for the not-so-rich |

| Dear Brokeass, What I'm having the worst issue with is that most of the stuff we do has such a small impact. Recycle, reuse, on and on. I know the biggest place to make an impact is transportation, but the vehicle cost has me down. I'd love a hybrid car, but when you're strapped for cash and you need transportation to get to work/school, used hybrids in the $2,000 range just do not exist. | Here's an interesting bit from a Q&A with Reid and Pelosi: I have a couple questions about global warming. First, to Mr. Reid, does the Senate plan to follow Ms. Pelosi's plan to create a new select committee? Will you actually create a new select committee? And then for both of you, I'm curious, you've talked about global warming and there are many solutions out there from a cap on carbon dioxide to renewables, energy efficiency. As you talk about legislation ... |

| Bill McKibben's Step It Up 2007 campaign (read his dispatches) is trying to rally a bunch of simultaneous protests pushing a single goal: reducing greenhouse-gas emissions by 80% by 2050. This approach -- picking a goal rather than supporting specific legislation -- is known as bright lining, and it's something you're going to hear a lot more about on this site fairly soon (stay tuned!). I'm a big fan. What if we could get every green group to agree on a bright line ... |
