The House of Representatives yesterday approved $25 billion in direct loans to help the auto industry comply with stricter gas mileage standards. The loans will assist automakers in meeting fuel-efficiency standards set in last year's energy bill that push fleet standards up to at least 35 miles per gallon by 2020. The funds can be used to retool older plants and help companies create advanced batteries and new hybrid technologies. Auto suppliers will also be eli ...

Amid a flurry of votes on energy issues in the House today, the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming held a hearing on the role of automobile fuel economy as gas prices continue to increase. 'Because 70 percent of oil goes into transportation, any solutions to the oil crisis must focus on the transportation sector,' said Select Committee Chair Ed Markey (D-Mass.). Tyler Duvall, the assistant secretary for policy at the Department of Transp ...

The White House has refused to accept the Environmental Protection Agency's conclusion that greenhouse gases are pollutants that must be controlled, and has told EPA officials that the email they sent containing the document of their findings would not be opened, reports The New York Times. Apparently the email in question has been hanging in limbo since December 2007, according to EPA officials. The document details the EPA's proposed response to the Supreme Cour ...

We reported a few weeks ago that the House Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming had reached a deal with the White House to secure documents from the Environmental Protection Agency on its work in response to the Supreme Court's decision in the case Massachusetts v. EPA. We also reported that The Wall Street Journal had gotten ahold of an advance draft of the EPA's regulatory proposals for automobile fuel efficiency resulting from the Massachuse ...

Republican presidential contender John McCain gave a speech in Fresno, Calif., today calling for a $300 million prize, paid by the government, to be awarded to the person who can design a better electric car battery. 'This is one dollar for every man, woman, and child in the U.S. -- a small price to pay for helping to break the back of our oil dependency -- and should deliver a power source at 30 percent of the current costs,' said McCain. The Republican candid ...

Tough draft Draft copy of EPA rulemaking on fuel efficiency suggests higher standards are possible |

Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal teased that they'd gotten ahold of an advance draft of the EPA's regulatory proposals for automobile fuel efficiency. According to the WSJ, EPA staffers found that cars and trucks could be even more fuel-efficient by 2020 than the 35 miles per gallon required by the latest update to CAFE standards. The draft notes that advanced technologies like plug-in hybrid vehicles could help raise fuel efficiency well beyond 35 mile ...

| Is the sting of $75-a-barrel oil and the threat of World War III exploding in the Middle East enough to convince Congress to finally boost auto fuel economy? Probably not, but a bipartisan coalition of senators led by Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is launching an admirable new effort anyway -- the Fuel Economy Reform Act. Barack Obama. | Cringe as we might over record-high gasoline prices, they could be the best thing to happen to automobile fuel economy since the Arab oil embargo. Nowhere to go but up. The soaring cost of oil in recent weeks has sent Washington lawmakers into an election-year frenzy. Some of their proposals -- like one from Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) to offer Americans $100 checks to defray ... |

Is CAFE kaput? Since 1975, CAFE -- or corporate average fuel economy -- standards have stood as America's defining energy-efficiency strategy. Yet, despite much wailing and gnashing of teeth by activists and a handful of politicians, the standards for passenger cars haven't been raised since 1985 -- they still call for automakers' car fleets to get an average ...

A whole lot of exaggerating going on. If you think the fuel economy of U.S. vehicles is dismal, well, you're right. Perhaps more right than you know. Official U.S. EPA statistics ascribe a pathetic average of 20.8 miles per gallon to the 2003 car fleet, about 6 percent lower than 15 years ago. The fleet averaged 22.1 mpg in 1987, before Americans got h ...
