Bye-bye, hybrids Kicking Toyota out of the country |
Katharine Wroth |

| Let's say you're threatened by hybrids. Let's say you're particularly threatened by hybrids coming into the U.S. from another country, and proving mighty popular. What might be a creative way to fix the problem? Oh, how about suing for patent infringement? 'If the International Trade Commission agrees with Solomon, [Toyota] could be banned from importing the systems and the Prius and Highlander hybrid models that they power.' Stay tuned. |

'Health Care for Hybrids' -- a smart trade? Obama and Inslee propose to save the American auto industry by paying it to do the smart thing |

| Don't miss "Salvaging the Auto Industry," a Boston Globe op-ed from Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.), two of the Dems' brightest lights on energy issues. (Inslee wrote a piece in Grist on his New Apollo Energy Act.) Obama and Inslee propose a piece of legislation called the 'Health Care for Hybrids' Act. The idea is that the feds would help American auto companies pay some of their enormous healthcare costs; in return, the companie ... |

| Announcements of technological breakthroughs that are going to save the planet are a dime a dozen. The true test is commercial success on the free market. By 'free market' I mean no tax money to support its continued existence, and by 'save the planet' I mean something that does not feed the planet to our cars. We are going to see a commercial application of this new technology in just a few months. You can find more details here. I promised on my last post to look ... |

| At 25 years of age, Sundance is the country's premier festival of independent film. But a lot has changed over that quarter century. Well, actually, one thing has changed: m-o-n-e-y. There's a ton of Hollywood cash spent at Sundance, and I could see it everywhere I looked last week. The "VIP" corporate parties on Main Street. The piles of free stuff for celebrities. The Moviefon ... |

| Speaking of Participant Productions, I just discovered they have two more environmentally themed films in development: 1) Luna Luna is based on the true story of Julia Butterfly Hill, a drifter turned environmentalist who galvanized the movement in the early 90's to save the redwood trees in Northern California from deforestation.Julia Hill was a young woman without direction or purpose whose travels brought her to Northern California and the quiet majesty of the ... |

| Normally, with the exception of those for hybrids, I can't stand car commercials. But then there is this. As you will learn from the length of the commercial, as well as the fact the car is on the 'wrong' side of the road, it is for UK audiences. Sigh ... Europeans do so many things so much better. I'd like to see a counter ad from Toyota with 'this is what a Prius sounds like ...' followed by silence. (Via PSFK) |

| About a week ago I did a short post on Prius/oil-related matters that seemed to irritate a few folks. I hadn't noticed until today that our occasional contributor (and pundit nonpareil) Clark Williams-Derry posted a response. He seemed to be approaching the question the same way some other people did, so I thought I'd offer a reply. | Treehugger mocks this, from the notoriously hack-a-rrific Wall Street Journal editorial page: Petroleum not consumed by Prius owners is not 'saved'. It does not stay in the ground. It is consumed by someone else. Greenhouse gases are still released. I'm all for mocking the WSJ editorial page, but this statement is quite true. Oil supply and demand are tightly coupled right now and are only going to get more so. Any dribble of oil you don't use will be snapped up ... |

| I dropped in on the local electric car dealership the other day to kick some tires and see what's new. I especially liked the look of one model. Gas Mileage: Consumer Retorts Consumer Reports' real-world mpg figures make the Prius even more appealing |

| Consumer Reports recently claimed that EPA's vehicle ratings routinely overstate how fuel-efficient cars and trucks are in real-world driving. For standard cars and trucks, the magazine says, EPA's ratings overstate real-world fuel economy by 30 percent. But for small hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius, they claim that EPA overstates actual miles-per-gallon by a hefty 42 percent. (Ouch.) Now, I believe that there's reason to question Consumer Reports' figures. O ... |
