Obama expecting 'serious conversation' about 'drastic steps' on climate change

| There was -- see if this sounds familiar -- almost nothing about climate or energy in the recent Democratic primary debate hosted by NPR. There was one intriguing tidbit at the end, however, triggered off this question from a listener: Mr. JAMES IRWIN: What do you think the toughest choice you have left to make is? Is it gay marriage, immigration, the war in Iraq? What haven't you made up your mind on yet? And why haven't you? Clinton, Gravel, Dodd, Edwards, an ... |

| How ambitious should the next president be in tackling global warming? A document issued today by a team at the University of Colorado indicates that No. 44 can be, and should be, far more aggressive than any of the candidates has promised so far. The Presidential Climate Action Project -- a two-year effort headquartered at the university -- has released a presidential action agenda that contains more than 300 specific changes in federal policies, programs and sta ... |

What should I ask Andrew Rice?

03 Dec 2007 |

| In about three hours, at 1pm PST, I'll be chatting with Andrew Rice, the 34-year-old Okla. state senator and Democratic candidate for Senate in Oklahoma. Yes, that's the guy running against the 74-year-old Inhofe. You can read about his positions on the issue here. (Global warming is one of the top four.) Oklahoma's a fairly conservative state -- it went 66% Republican in the last presidential election -- though there's a popular Dem in the governor's mansion. Rep ... |

| UPDATE: Australia's new government has ratified Kyoto. Wow. That was fast. Though we've mentioned them a couple of times in our news stream, I'm not sure I've fully appreciated just how seismic recent political changes in Australia have been. Not only was the Liberal (pro-business right) party defeated but according to John Quiggen it's completely falling apart, with most of its prominent conservative power brokers quitting and their successors repudiating the far-ri ... |

| The Heartland Presidential Forum will take place in Des Moines, Iowa, tomorrow, broadcast live from 2:30 to 5:30 EST on CSPAN1 and webcast live at movementvisionlab.org. Clinton, Dodd, Edwards, Kucinich, and Obama will be there. This forum should be somewhat unique in that grassroots activists from all over will be allowed to tell their stories and ask questions on stage. I'm told farm and environmental questions will be involved. Should be interesting. |

Coal's desperate campaign for survival A multi-million dollar ad campaign tries to convince Americans that coal still rules |

| Today's Progress Report from CAP has a great rundown on the clean coal industry and the presidential debates. I've put the whole thing under the fold. Read it and weep: Viewers tuning into Wednesday's CNN/YouTube Republican debate probably saw commercials for "clean coal." They may have also seen an ad for the debate in that morning's Washington Post, with a note at the bottom reading: "Sponsored by Clean Coal, America's Power." These initiat ... |

| Unless the Democrats manage to blow the '08 elections, or some other calamity strikes, a president who is ready to seriously confront the climate crisis will be sworn into office in January 2009. Following in the footsteps of other Democratic candidates, Joe Biden unveiled his climate and energy plan on November 20, 2007. Biden's plan looks a little bit generic compared with the offerings we've seen from Edwards, Dodd, Richardson, Obama, and most recently, Hillary C ... |

| A couple nights ago I spoke briefly and rather aimlessly at the first Seattle EcoTuesday. The assumption seems to be that politics is bad and that the ideal state w ... |

| Global warming takes down its first major political victim: Conservative Prime Minister John Howard suffered a humiliating defeat Saturday at the hands of the left-leaning opposition, whose leader has promised to immediately sign the Kyoto Protocol on global warming. Why the stunning loss? A key reason was Howard's "head in the sand dust" response to the country's brutal once-in-a-thousand year drought. As the UK's Independent reported in April: ... |

| A few final notes from Grist's presidential climate forum, before (?) you get sick of me talking about it. Most memorable bits: Dennis Kucinich mentioning, at the very top of his speech, that he's a vegan. I heard the sound of thousands (or at least a dozen extremely vocal) Grist readers swooning.
