John McCain and climate change How strong is McCain's commitment to fighting global warming? |

Gristmill |
| The following post was first published on Passing Through, The Nation's guest blog, where I will be posting all month. Though recession and war are probably higher on the public's immediate priority list, there is no challenge of greater historical consequence facing the next U.S. president than the climate crisis. It is vitally important that the next chief executive enter the Oval Office committed to decisive and sustained action. He or she will need a firm g ... |

A compulsive ... nontruth-teller John McCain avoids using the word 'mandatory' when discussing cap-and-trade |

| When will the media stop calling McCain a straight-talker and realize he is a pathological doubletalker? I realize the 'L' word is frowned upon in politics, so instead of using that word, which, in any case, doesn't do justice to the full range of doubletalk in the political arena -- let's just imagine there is an agreed-upon objective scale from 1 to 10 of veracity (with 5 being half-true) that goes something like this: (10) Fred Thompson, December 2007: 'I' ... |

Barack's economic policy speech in Wisconsin Obama lauds green jobs and clean tech in economy speech |

| Photo: Sam Graham-Felsen In a speech on Wednesday at a GM auto plant in Wisconsin, Barack Obama outlined his economic agenda for the country. He described his stimulus plan, promising to boost green jobs, help the middle class, dole out tax cuts, negotiate worker and environmental protections in upcoming free-trade agreements -- and, to help pay for much of it, end the costly war in Iraq. The environmental highlights of the speech are below (audio ... |

| Posted at 5:36 AM on 13 Feb 2008 Still glowing after racking up three more decisive primary victories in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., Barack Obama today is giving a major speech on the economy at a General Motors plant in Wisconsin. Stay tuned to Grist for the green take. Hillary Clinton made a less ballyhooed speech at a GM plant in Maryland on Monday, where she emphasized the importance of hybrid ve ... |

Bad outfits, good recycling habits Hillary Clinton touts her green cred in an Us Weekly spread |
Lisa Hymas |

| Us Weekly, Feb. 18 In an effort to humanize and humorize her image, Hillary Clinton gamely went along with a four-page spread for the latest issue of celeb rag Us Weekly, offering comments on some of her fashion misses of yesteryear. Explaining a huge, garish coat she wore in 2000, she says, 'I'm a big believer in recycling -- even carpets! |

| Posted at 5:05 PM on 11 Feb 2008 Prior to his weekend wins in Louisiana, Nebraska, Washington, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Barack Obama promised to begin developing the U.S. position on an international pact to halt global warming now, instead of waiting until 2009. "I've been in conversations with former Vice President [Al] Gore repeatedly, and his recommendation, which I think is sound, is that you c ... |

Obama takes Maine in a wicked pissah

| Looks like Obama has won Maine in something of a blowout. This was a state that was widely expected to go to Clinton, and in which she had a commanding lead in the polls through late last year. At this point she's got to be wishing everyone could just go to sleep until the Texas primary. On the bright side, she's got a very, very narrow lead in New Mexico, with 99% reporting. In other rumorish news, it suuure sounds like Colin Powell's getting ready to endorse Obama: ... |

| Barack Obama's speech in Seattle today made this 26-year-old feel positively old. I and a few other Gristers hopped a bus over to the rally in Key Arena and were greeted by a stadium overflowing with supporters, many of them high school and college students. I overheard an usher say 'I dont see this kind of support for [Seattle's basketball team] the Sonics anymore.' (The venue holds 18,000 people: by speech time it was over capacity, with people crowded on the floor, ... |

The shape of the race The next U.S. president will favor a carbon cap. What effect this has on the race is anyone's guess. |

| Now that John McCain is the presumptive Republican nominee, the shape of the debate over climate change takes on different contours. Hillary and Obama are offering substantively similar climate plans, so there's no need to wait for the Democratic contest to be decided before we start gaming out a few scenarios. 1) Will climate change take on more or less prominence as an issue in the general election? Argument for less: with everyone preaching from the same book, th ... |

No climate for old men Why John McCain isn't the candidate to stop global warming |
Joseph Romm |

| McCain's astonishing doubletalk on climate in the Florida GOP debate -- denying that a cap and trade system is a mandate -- made me start rethinking what a McCain presidency would mean for the fight to prevent catastrophic global warming. The more I researched McCain's views, the more I talked to others, the more I felt forced to change my previous view. Salon has just published my long analysis, which concludes that while he would be vastly superior to Bush on c ... |

| I wouldn't normally post about the latest round of Gore endorsement speculation, since nobody ever has anything new to say about it, but this comes from Steve Clemons, a D.C. insider who knows of what he speaks. He says a source close to the Clinton campaign told him that a rumor is running rampant that Gore is going to come off the fence and endorse Obama soon. Again, this is a third-hand account, worth only so much, but Clemons has credibility, so I thought I'd pass ... |

| Mitt Romney dropped out of the presidential race today, which all but insures that John McCain will be the Republican candidate. I wonder: how will Republicans and industry groups lobby against a carbon bill if their president supports it? That is a strategic dilemma I'm sure they have their finest minds working on as we speak. |

New Nation post Will the media give McCain a free ride on climate? |
David Roberts |
07 Feb 2008 |
Gristmill |
| My latest post on The Nation is up, asking: Will the media give McCain a free ride on climate? I know there's a sense out there that because McCain is relatively sane on climate, this race might pose the opportunity to have a serious discussion of the issue. But my fear is the opposite: that because the candidates (seem to) agree on the issue, the media will ignore it, focusing instead on areas where there's controversy. That's basically what happened in 2000, as my ... |

| Posted at 10:46 PM on 05 Feb 2008 Coming out of Super Tuesday's primaries and caucuses in 22 states, the Republicans are looking ever more likely to nominate their most eco-conscious candidate, John McCain, who was the big GOP winner of the day. | Far as I know, Obama was the only candidate to buy an ad during the Super Bowl today, one that ran in 24 states, to the tune of $250,000. It's interesting to me that in perhaps the highest profile, highest stakes ad the Obama campaign has ever run, the focus is on two strongly progressive messages: ending the war and saving the planet.
