Coal's desperate campaign for survival A multi-million dollar ad campaign tries to convince Americans that coal still rules |
David Roberts |

| Today's Progress Report from CAP has a great rundown on the clean coal industry and the presidential debates. I've put the whole thing under the fold. Read it and weep: Viewers tuning into Wednesday's CNN/YouTube Republican debate probably saw commercials for "clean coal." They may have also seen an ad for the debate in that morning's Washington Post, with a note at the bottom reading: "Sponsored by Clean Coal, America's Power." These initiat ... |

| Unless the Democrats manage to blow the '08 elections, or some other calamity strikes, a president who is ready to seriously confront the climate crisis will be sworn into office in January 2009. Following in the footsteps of other Democratic candidates, Joe Biden unveiled his climate and energy plan on November 20, 2007. Biden's plan looks a little bit generic compared with the offerings we've seen from Edwards, Dodd, Richardson, Obama, and most recently, Hillary C ... |

A political issue Partisan debate on climate change vs. unity |

| A couple nights ago I spoke briefly and rather aimlessly at the first Seattle EcoTuesday. I mentioned that the leading Democratic candidates all have detailed, creditable climate and energy plans, and the leading Republican candidates don't. Afterward, a guy pulled me aside to scold me for "making it a political issue." It's something I hear a lot, and I remain utterly baffled by it. The assumption seems to be that politics is bad and that the ideal state w ... |

America was founded by giants. Others have appeared since to guide us through crises or to great things: Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King. We have had leaders whose oratory has, sometimes in a single sentence, rallied the American people around their obligati ... |

| Tonight's CNN/YouTube debate for the Republican presidential candidates is, like the previous CNN debate for Dems, brought to you by the coal industry. From ThinkProgress: Sponsorship of tonight's debate appears aimed at influencing Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R), who is leading a "crusade against coal." Crist has unveiled a plan to reduce his state's carbon dioxide emissions by replacing coal plants with solar thermal power plants. He has also canceled ... |

| This post is by ClimateProgress guest blogger Bill Becker, Executive Director of the Presidential Climate Action Project. Rajendra Pachuari. As I mentioned in a previous post, many of my colleagues in climate-action circles are delighted at the detailed commitments the presidential candidates in the Democratic field are making around global warming. It seems ungrateful to ask them for more. But ask we must. We need to know what they'll do to act quickly. ... |

| Global warming takes down its first major political victim: Conservative Prime Minister John Howard suffered a humiliating defeat Saturday at the hands of the left-leaning opposition, whose leader has promised to immediately sign the Kyoto Protocol on global warming. Why the stunning loss? A key reason was Howard's "head in the sand dust" response to the country's brutal once-in-a-thousand year drought. As the UK's Independent reported in April: ... |

| A few final notes from Grist's presidential climate forum, before (?) you get sick of me talking about it. Most memorable bits: Dennis Kucinich mentioning, at the very top of his speech, that he's a vegan. I heard the sound of thousands (or at least a dozen extremely vocal) Grist readers swooning. Kucinich offering every American a guaranteed minimum income, and coal miners in particular a not-mining wage equal to what they were making in the mines. Who me ... |

| The Grist presidential forum on climate and energy went off without a hitch and was a huge success. I'll have much more to say about it tomorrow, but for now I just want to thank, again, all the groups that worked to bring it together, the wonder-working production crew at the venue, and the candidates who participated. As for me, the adrenaline from the event has worn off, but the subsequent alcohol intake has not, so I believe I'll go to bed. More later. |

| I suppose no one should be shocked that Fox had a five-against-one (Greenpeace's John Passacantando) panel to savage Hillary Clinton's terrific climate and energy plan. The video is worth watching to see just how much some conservatives hate the strategies that are crucial to avoiding catastrophic global warming: I was surprised to see that Wayne Rogers of M*A*S*H fame has morphed into another Fox wacko.
