| Updated 22 Aug 2008 Barack Obama. Energy and environment in the Democratic YouTube debate Lots of good answers |
David Roberts |
24 Jul 2007 |
Gristmill |
| I haven't watched all of the YouTube/CNN Democratic debate yet. Early reviews are good, and from what I've seen it was unusually substantive and spontaneous, but I agree with Josh Marshall that some of the cutesy videos tarnished the dignity of the proceedings a bit. There were three questions on energy and environment. How can we reduce America's energy consumption? Gravel is loopy; Dodd is solid but kinda boring; Cooper indulges in a silly gotcha. How will we ... |

The future is solar; politics is ethanol Hillary pays tribute to Iowa politics |
David Roberts |

Gristmill |
| This is (bitterly) funny: As Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton climbed onto a makeshift stage at the Iowa State Fairgrounds and embraced motor fuel from corn as a key to America's future, she completed a turnabout from being an ethanol opponent, a position she held only two years ago. ... Political observers view her about-face as a political necessity, saying Iowa's first-in-the-nation's caucuses -- in which residents of the country's biggest corn-producing state v ... |

| The saying goes that during one of his bids for the White House, a woman told Adlai Stevenson 'Not to worry, Senator, all thinking people are with you,' to which he replied: 'But I need a majority!' Not only was Stevenson smart and quick-witted enough to make that story plausible, it suggests that the smartest candidates have always had to do a little bit of hiding their lights under a bushel. But now we live in what Vonnegut called the ultimate scary reality show: C-Stude ... |

Rocky III? Salt Lake City might jump in for another term |
David Roberts |
21 Jun 2007 |

| It's no secret that we have something of a organization-wide crush on crusading Salt Lake City mayor Rocky Anderson. As he mentioned in our interview, his plan has been to leave politics and move into advocacy behind environmental and human rights causes. But it looks like he might be reconsidering. You see, the slate of candidates for Salt Lake mayor is pretty grim. The one truly progressive candidate, the one Rocky endorsed, may not advance beyond the primary. If h ... |

| After reading so many awful stories about Al Gore, it's nice to finally come upon a good one. The reliably excellent Ryan Lizza gets it right in The New Republic. It's also worth reading the transcript of his interview with Gore, which contains much tasty goodness, including this compact, dead-on description of modern presidential campaigns:I don't want to be critical of the candidates, that's not my intention. But I don't think the modern campaign process facilitates ... |

Obama, CTL, and opportunity costs Better, but still not great |
David Roberts |
13 Jun 2007 |
Gristmill |
| This statement from Obama is a welcome clarification of his position on liquid coal: he says he won't support it unless it demonstrates 'at least 20% less life-cycle carbon than conventional fuels.' The key term, of course, is 'life-cycle.' Unless he's weaseling, that means the whole shebang, from mining to refining to burning. This is a clear line in the sand, and Obama's to be commended for it. But.It still dodges the crux of the issue: opportunity costs. The techno ... |

Clinton and Obama: eco-sellouts? A columnist thinks so |
David Roberts |
24 May 2007 |

| Over at Politico, Glenn Hurowitz argues that at key moments, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have sold out the public interest in favor of polluting industries in their states. He says they could stand to learn something from Bill Richardson and John Edwards, whose energy/climate plans are ambitious and powerful. I suspect that if you look closely enough at Richardson's and Edwards' records, you could find some evidence that they're not above parochialism either, but ... |
