Errata A few last bits of musing from Grist's presidential forum on climate |
David Roberts |

Gristmill |
| A few final notes from Grist's presidential climate forum, before (?) you get sick of me talking about it. Most memorable bits: Dennis Kucinich mentioning, at the very top of his speech, that he's a vegan. I heard the sound of thousands (or at least a dozen extremely vocal) Grist readers swooning. Kucinich offering every American a guaranteed minimum income, and coal miners in particular a not-mining wage equal to what they were making in the mines. Who me ... |

More light, less heat Reflections on Grist's presidential forum on climate change |

| On Saturday, presidential candidates Dennis Kucinich, John Edwards, and Hillary Clinton gathered in L.A. to discuss climate and energy at a forum co-sponsored by Grist and PRI's Living on Earth. The forum was moderated by Steve Curwood of LoE, with Mary Nichols of the California Air Resources Board and me providing questions. Despite a delay getting started -- Clinton was late arriving -- things went off without a hitch. Well, mostly without a hitch. When Clinton ca ... |

Wayne Rogers is no Alan Alda Fox News disses Clinton climate plan |

| I suppose no one should be shocked that Fox had a five-against-one (Greenpeace's John Passacantando) panel to savage Hillary Clinton's terrific climate and energy plan. The video is worth watching to see just how much some conservatives hate the strategies that are crucial to avoiding catastrophic global warming: I was surprised to see that Wayne Rogers of M*A*S*H fame has morphed into another Fox wacko. He labels Hillary's plan 'idiotic,' calls her a 'crazy pe ... |

Who are you calling sensible, punk? Hillary Clinton struggles to explain away her previous opposition to corn ethanol |
David Roberts |
07 Nov 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Over the years, Hillary Clinton has voted against subsidies and mandates for corn ethanol in the Senate a number of times. If you know anything about corn ethanol, you know that's a good thing. When Clinton released her (otherwise excellent) energy plan this week, it contained a whole boatload of ... subsidies and mandates for corn ethanol. That is, conversely, a bad thing. Obama's campaign took the opportunity to bash Clinton for it -- not for switching from a sensi ... |

Clinton's climate and energy plan Some reflections on the strengths and weaknesses of Hillary's new proposal |

| Efficiency and permit auctions and R&D, oh my! Hillary Clinton released her comprehensive energy and climate plan today. It is thoughtful, comprehensive, and though disappointingly conventional in a few areas, inspiringly bold in others. With the release of Clinton's plan, all three Democratic frontrunners for the presidency now have visionary, far-reaching energy plans that would fundamentally reorient the country away from carbon-intensive energy ... |

The advisors speak A conference call with Clinton's energy advisors, about her new energy plan |
David Roberts |

Gristmill |
| I was just on a conference call with the Clinton campaign's energy advisors, who were answering questions from the press. A couple of interesting tidbits: I noted that the cap-and-trade system laid out by Clinton dramatically exceeds what's contained in the Lieberman-Warner bill, both in terms of the permit auctions and the overall targets, and noted that Clinton's on the Senate energy committee, which will be taking up the L-W bill soon. I asked if her bold plan mean ... |

| Here is Hillary Clinton's comprehensive new climate and energy plan, just introduced: ----- Powering America's Future: Hillary Clinton's Plan to Address the Energy and Climate Crisis Hillary understands that we face two immense energy and environmental challenges: a growing climate crisis, and an increasing reliance on foreign oil that is driving up energy costs for Americans. She also knows that Americans have always demonstrated the will and the ingenuity to ... |

| UPDATE: The full transcript of the speech is here. Hillary is getting ready to unveil her new energy strategy in a speech in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Afterwards, her campaign advisors will be taking questions from the media. I'll be live-blogging the speech, below: Climate change is bad; high energy prices are bad; importing all our oil is bad; power plant pollution is bad.The president has done nothing to help; he's censored scientists. We can solve this problem. It ... |

| Over the course of Monday and Tuesday, Hillary Clinton is going to introduce her new energy plan -- "Powering America's Future: New Energy, New Jobs' -- with a few speeches and briefings. I will, naturally, be covering it like a static-clingy blanket. If anyone out there in blog land runs across interesting links or documents relating to it, send them my way. |

| Today, in an address to the Carnegie Institution for Science (timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Sputnik), Hillary rolled out her science agenda. After some strong rebukes to the Bush administration for its "war on science," she offered this course of action: Expand human and robotic space exploration and speed development of vehicles to would replace the space shuttle. Launch a space-based climate change initiative to combat global warmi ... |

The future is solar; politics is ethanol Hillary pays tribute to Iowa politics |
David Roberts |
23 Jul 2007 |
Gristmill |
| This is (bitterly) funny: As Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton climbed onto a makeshift stage at the Iowa State Fairgrounds and embraced motor fuel from corn as a key to America's future, she completed a turnabout from being an ethanol opponent, a position she held only two years ago. ... Political observers view her about-face as a political necessity, saying Iowa's first-in-the-nation's caucuses -- in which residents of the country's biggest corn-producing state v ... |
