Saved By the Bellwether Some school fundraisers start hawking greener products |
|
15 Jul 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 8:39 AM on 15 Jul 2008 Some school and nonprofit fundraisers recently have turned to greener options to generate needed cash. Instead of sending youngsters out into the community to hawk items of questionable greenness like candy, magazines, and virgin-forest wrapping paper, some schools have instead turned to greener wares such as fair-trade coffee, metal water bottles, hand-made soaps, and recycled-conten ... |

Wall*E

| I saw WallE the other day with my kids and I found it absolutely rapturous, particularly the first half-hour or so. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up nominated for Best Picture. Not only is it a creative triumph, but it manages to convey 'lessons' (ugh) about 'environmental stewardship' (ugh) in a way that isn't didactic or overbearing. It's really something. I was going to try to write a profound post about it, but luckily Frank Rich takes on that task today, so ... |

| I've started running a few times a week. Each morning, I grab the clothes I've set out the night before and finish getting dressed in the garage, because I don't want to wake my family. Then I go into my neighborhood and run, although running is a misnomer. Really, it's more of a jog -- and sometimes just a walk. These legs are made for parenting. These jog/walk sessions don' ... |

| To file under 'academic demonstration of what we already knew,' here's an abstract from a new paper in the journal Environmental Politics: Environmental scepticism denies the seriousness of environmental problems, and self-professed 'sceptics' claim to be unbiased analysts combating 'junk science.' This study quantitatively analyses 141 English-language environmentally sceptical books published between 1972 and 2005. We find that over 92 per cent of these books, mos ... |

Out With the Red Pen, in With the Green House passes bill to green up schools |
|
05 Jun 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 4:47 PM on 05 Jun 2008 The House of Representatives has passed a bill that would put more than $20 billion over the next five years toward improving energy efficiency in schools. Democrats say the modestly named 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act would save school districts billions in energy costs. In addition, said Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller (D-Calif.) ... |

Climate and service Obama's commencement speech calls for service to the country, planet on climate front |

| David beat me to a post on Barack Obama's commencement speech at Wesleyan on Sunday. The part about climate change and clean energy was good, but what I found most encouraging was at the beginning, when climate change was cited, along with hunger, war, and economic strife, as an area where our personal lives and the life of the nation should be aligned: [Y]ou are about to enter a world that makes it easy to get caught up in the notion that there are actually two dif ... |

Celebrating Earth Day with Tom Friedman An interview with The 'Stache pre-pie-in-the-face |

| Yes, Tom Friedman came to Brown University on Earth Day to unveil his new book and got hit by a pie. But he cleaned himself up, came back with a joke about surviving Beirut and Jerusalem but running into trouble in Providence, and went on to deliver a stem-winder of an address for an op-ed columnist essentially outlining his latest book. I found The World Is Flat to be a good window into business models in the 21st century. His new offering, Hot, Flat, and Crowded ... |

| There were plenty of depressing numbers out there this Earth Day, from dwindling numbers of moose in Minnesota to ongoing honey bee decline. But to me, this takes the Prozac-frosted cake: a study found that while young people could identify a thousand corporate logos, they couldn't identify even a handful of plants and animals in their backyards. Will future generations care about protecting the planet if they can't even pick a starling out of a lineup? How can we ... |
