Bingaman and Domenici propose Energy Efficiency Promotion Act Good stuff |
David Roberts |
19 Apr 2007 |
Gristmill |
| I'll leave it to Gar to judge if the targets are sufficiently aggressive, but either way I'm happy to see new legislation on energy efficiency being proposed in Congress. This stuff isn't sexy and doesn't garner much media attention, but -- as we keep saying -- efficiency is the low-hanging fruit. Time to eat some of it. |

Presidential contender supports carbon tax If you can really call Chris Dodd a 'contender' |
David Roberts |
19 Apr 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Finally, a candidate for president has come out in support of a carbon tax! OK, it was Chris Dodd, but still. Dodd's big energy speech this morning was mostly the usual stuff about tax credits and subsidies, but here's the section that produced the headline: The truth is, we can make all the clean energy investments in the world, but we will never be able to rid ourselves of fossil fuel energy sources when they remain the cheapest option. It's true that so ... |

| The House of Representatives held its first Ag committee hearing ever on organic agriculture today. I attended the hearing and found out Rep. | Down in Salt Lake City, the National Governors Association is holding a three-day Energy Summit. Tired of federal slacking, the NGA has for the first time in its history drawn up a specific list of priorities for Congress to consider this session. Here's what they said: At the top of the list - in fact, an 'imperative' - is acting to head off the devastation of climate change, Huntsman said during opening remarks at the three-day Utah Energy Summit in downtown Salt ... |

Step It Up media coverage Mostly in the local papers |

| I'm moving this to a separate thread. I'm trying to track news coverage of SIU events -- most of which is popping up in local and regional newspapers. If you know of a story I haven't got here, leave it in comments -- I'll be updating. Forthwith: Coverage of Step It Up events in Annapolis, Md., the Hudson Valley, all across Maine, Chicago, Pennsylvania, the Adirondack Mountains, Michigan, Florida, Southern California, Notre Dame, several Conn. towns, Colorado College ... |

Step it up! Get out there on the street! |
David Roberts |
14 Apr 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Today is the day! Across the United States, in more than 1,300 communities, citizens are gathering together at local grassroots events to send a clear message to Congress: Step it up. Pass legislation that will insure an 80% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The world's eyes are upon us. Go here to find an event in your area. Later today, after I get a little sleep, I will be attempting to chronicle at least some portion of what promises to be a historical o ... |

Green around the Gilchrest Good interview on climate change |

| Good interview with Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-Md.) in Foreign Policy in Focus this week. Gilchrest, chair of the House Climate Change Caucus and co-sponsor of the Climate Stewardship Act, was not appointed to the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming last month because he refused to deny that humans are causing climate change. | Rep. Jay Inslee's two central passions, clean energy and global warming, received scant attention during his last eight years in Congress. | Interesting: Senators of both parties are pushing for U.S. intelligence agencies to assess the danger to the nation's security posed by global warming. Sens. | There's not much new in this story about Dingell -- yeah, yeah, he's going to move slowly and deliberately on climate change -- but I really hate this way of framing things: Speaking with reporters, Dingell said that he expects the end result to elicit complaints from both environmentalists and industrialists. 'I seriously doubt if anybody is going to be happy with what we do, and that may be the best test of whether we have written a good bill,' he said. The &q ... |

| This short piece from Harvey Wasserman gets pretty much everything right -- and by "right" I mean, "in agreement with me." My only quibble is that he spends too much time bashing nukes, and bashing them for the wrong reasons (wrong effective-messaging-wise, not necessarily substance-wise). I'd prefer he bash them because they're more expensive and less flexible than R&E, not for the well-hashed-over waste issue. But that's a quibble. Here's t ... |

More Inhofian troglodyticism The man blocks Gore's concert on the Capitol steps |

| One of the many stories I missed today: Sen. James Inhofe, in a characteristically petty display of foot-stomping, is blocking Al Gore's efforts to have one of his Live Earth concerts on the Capitol steps. Inhofe says it's partisan. Guess it is now. Some good quotes: Noting that many political events -- including the 1990 Earth Day celebration -- have been held on the Capitol steps, [Republican Sen. Olympia] Snowe was, her spokesman said, 'genuinely disappointed' ... |

| Readers of this site may well be burnt out on talk of Gore's testimony to Congress. But if not, do check out Brad Plumer's wrap-up -- it's good. One point I think bears emphasizing. Almost all the analysis I've seen of the event -- particularly with regard to the dust-up with Inhofe -- discusses how it's going to play to the public, as though Gore approached it as an extension of his movie, speaking for the cameras' benefit. I think that gets it all wrong. I don't ... |

Cap-and-trade: better than nothing. Cap-and-trade with auctioned permits: better than cap-and-trade without. We should be pursuing widely distributed, small-scale renewable electricity generation, tied together with a smart grid. Our choice is not between nuclear and coal. ... |
