Coal is the enemy of the human race It's also the road to 'energy security' |
David Roberts |
30 Nov 2006 |
Gristmill |
| A few times now John has made a point I have made in the past and now shall make again (how's that for a self-referential intro?). To wit: "Energy security" is a lopsided way of framing our energy problem, and left un-balanced, will do more harm than good. Why? Because the shortest, cheapest route to energy security (or 'independence,' if you like) is through coal, and coal is ... wait for it ... the enemy of the human race. This is not just true for China ... |

The Revolution Will Be Solarized An interview with Travis Bradford, author of Solar Revolution |
David Roberts |
30 Nov 2006 |
Main Dish |
| Solar power has been the Next Big Thing for decades now, yet it remains a niche player in the energy world. The problem of intermittency is unsolved, up-front capital costs remain high, and surging demand for polysilicon, a key component of solar panels, has recently outstripped supply, stifling production. Travis Bradford. So when someone claims that within decades solar ... |

| There's a great op-ed in the NYT today making the argument that, however much Malthus and his heirs have fallen out of favor, they may have the last laugh. Limits are back, baby! Here are two memes I'm happy to see getting out into the mainstream: In the words of a recent interviewee (watch for it tomorrow): Coal is the enemy of the human race. This, from the last paragraph:... we really need to start thinking hard about how our societies -- especially thos ... |

| Pits of Despair Coal industry fends off concerns, keeps working on comeback Some of the tap water in West Virginia's Mingo County is flowing in funny colors: red, brown, and black. Alarmed residents asked the state if the discoloration, caused by high levels of heavy metals including arsenic and lead, could be related to Big Coal's practice of injecting its waste underground. Regulators say there's ... |

The Texas Planet Massacre Texas may approve 16 new coal-fired power plants |

Daily Grist |
| The Texas Planet Massacre Texas may approve 16 new coal-fired power plants The state of Texas, which spews more greenhouse gases than Canada or the U.K., is set to reduce its emissions. And by "reduce" we mean "massively increase." Texas may soon approve construction of 16 new coal-fired power plants. And not the fancy new "clean coal" kind, either -- the old-school dirty kind, which would ... |

Texas set to build new coal-fired power plants National efforts to cut GHG emissions will suffer |
David Roberts |

| Everyone is justifiably excited about the good news out of California, but a much more representative microcosm of the climate debate can be found in the great state of Texas. Texas leads the nation in GHG emissions -- it spews more than Canada or the U.K. It has no plan for reducing those emissions. It has rejected legislative efforts to reduce them for years. In essence, Governor Rick Perry has said that he won't do anything until the feds do, which we all know is ... |

| I'm not sure what I expected when I picked up Jeff Goodell's Big Coal, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is neither a number-and-graph-filled wonkfest nor a provincial, narrow examination of a particular set of companies. Instead, it's an engagingly written narrative that travels through every stage of coal -- from extraction through travel through burning -- and ends with a broad examination of the consequences for the climate. I really can't recommend it highly enou ... |

| Governing magazine has an excellent, compact overview of current developments in coal. If you're hazy on gasification this, coal-to-liquid that, and Fischer-Tropsch the other, I recommend it. With oil and natural-gas prices rising and coal in plentiful supply, it's more or less inevitable that coal's going to get used, so it makes sense that (some) enviro organizations are biting the bullet and joining the push for the cleanest possible applications. Peak oil, coal, and bizarre optimism

| So last week Salon ran a big story on peak oil by Katharine Mieszkowski. It was decent, though focused a bit too much on the loony fringes. I guess the temptation to do that is irresistible when trying to make a long story about the Hubbert Curve and Venezuelan oil reserves compelling. Ethanol and coal What's really disturbing about the new coal-fired ethanol plants. |

| David's post about ethanol and coal inspired me to do a bit of research on just how much coal goes into producing G.W. Bush's favorite 'renewable,' 'clean-burning' fuel source. What I found is ... disturbing. First, some background. Before you can distill corn into fuel, you have to crush it. There are two ways to do so: wet milling and dry milling. According to this USDA document, dry milling accounts for about two-thirds of ethanol production, wet milling the rest ... |
