350 ppm or bust Hansen paper released; WaPo fails to link to Grist |
David Roberts |
07 Apr 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Several posts on this site have mentioned a recent paper from James Hansen et al. -- Target CO2: Where Should Humanity Aim? (PDF) -- which argues that the official E.U. target of 550 ppm global atmospheric CO2 is far too high, and that anything over 350 ppm risks putting human beings in a world radically different than anything they've ever known. The final version of the paper is now up, and there's been some good news coverage. For a good overview, see Ed Pil ... |

Sorry, deniers Research finds (once again) that climate change is not caused by cosmic rays |

| One more denier talking point has been debunked by scientists using actual observations. You can read the Science News article here, which explains, 'New research has dealt a blow to the skeptics who argue that climate change is all due to cosmic rays rather than to man-made greenhouse gases.' You can read the original article, just published by the Institute of Physics' Environmental Research Letters, 'Testing the proposed causal link between cosmic rays and cloud co ... |

| From the Think Progress Wonk Room. Atop the Drudge Report right now: Do the stories behind these headlines tell the tale that global warming alarmists have 'hijacked' the political debate despite a 'lack of natural disasters' and no global warming 'since 1998'? No. Let's review: DRUDGE HEADLINE #1: REPORT: GLOBAL TEMPS 'HAVE NOT RISEN SINCE 1998' This claim has been thoroughly debunked every time it's popped up. The oil-backed global ... |

More from the delayer-1000 du jour Why did Nature run Pielke's pointless, misleading, embarrassing nonsense? |
Joseph Romm |
02 Apr 2008 |
Gristmill |
| The usually thoughtful journal Nature has just published a pointless and misleading -- if not outright dangerous -- commentary by delayer-1000 du jour, Roger Pielke, Jr., along with Christopher Green, who, as we've seen, is another aspiring delayer. It will be no surprise to learn the central point of their essay, ironically titled 'Dangerous Assumptions' (available here [PDF] or here, with a subscription), is: 'Enormous advances in energy technology will be needed to s ... |

The biggest source of mistakes: carbon vs. carbon dioxide A factor of 3.67 makes a big difference when discussing climate |
Joseph Romm |
25 Mar 2008 |
Gristmill |
| The biggest source of confusion and errors in climate discussions probably concerns 'carbon' versus 'carbon dioxide.' I was reminded of this last week when I saw an analysis done for a major environmental group that confused the two and hence was wrong by a large factor (3.67). The paragraph I usually include in my writing: Some people use carbon rather than carbon dioxide as a metric. The fraction of carbon in carbon dioxide is the ratio of their weights. The atomic ... |

Fair and balanced? NASA's Hansen responds to NYT's Revkin |

| This post ends with an exclusive look at James Hansen's response to NYT journalist Andy Revkin's piece commenting on Hansen's (draft) article on why we need a CO2 target of 350 ppm. But first the backstory. Revkin used me as the 'balance' for his piece: Some longtime champions of Dr. Hansen, including the Climate Progress blogger Joe Romm, see some significant gaps in the paper (it is a draft still) and part ways with Dr. Hansen over whether such a goal is remotely f ... |

Gristmill |
| Here is the draft [PDF] of the long-awaited defense of why we need an ultimate target of 350 ppm for atmospheric carbon dioxide, by NASA's James Hansen et al., titled 'Target Atmospheric CO2: Where Should Humanity Aim?' (Yes, they know we're already at 385 ppm and rising 2 ppm a year.) The paper does suffer from one analytical weakness that makes it a tad less dire than it appears -- and some people believe the core element of this analysis is wrong (see very end of ... |

That statement is based on the data of the World Glacier Monitoring Service, which 'has been tracking the fate of glaciers for over a century. | I like the L.A. Times. They do some of the best reporting on environmental issues. So I'm reading a pretty good piece on how the EPA administrator overruled his science advisers on the recent ozone ruling (more on that in a later post), and I come to this remarkable paragraph that shows how the president himself actually intervened to weaken the EPA regulations: President Bush intervened at the 11th hour and turned down a second proposal by the EPA staff that w ... |

Climate change is back, baby! Where is the media coverage of February's incredible warming and extreme weather? |

| Well, that record cooling trend in January, which was solid evidence (to some) that human-caused global warming was at an end, melted away as fast as the summer ice in the Arctic. Not only did February begin a frighteningly unsustainable warming trend for this year, it saw a record number of tornadoes. Climate change is making a comeback! In your face, delayer-1000s! And as Jon Stewart -- or the Pope -- might say, damn you, polluters! But where is the news covera ... |

| Jim Manzi, with whom I have debated warming policy responses before, has a problem with The Washington Post's coverage of new studies on climate change. He writes: The premise of the story by Juliet Eilperin is well-expressed by its headline: 'Carbon Output Must Near Zero To Avert Danger, New Studies Say'. Eilperin prominently quotes Carnegie Institution senior scientist Ken Caldeira, co-author of one of the studies promoted by the article, who says: 'The question is, ... |

| The New York Times carried this interesting write-up of the Heartland Institute's 2008 International Conference on Climate Change. For those not familiar with this conference, it's like a scientific meeting on climate change -- without the science. The NYT article concluded with this statement, which pretty much sums it up: The meeting was largely framed around science, but after the luncheon, when an organizer made an announcement asking all of the scientis ... |

| If those who counsel inaction and delay succeed, billions of humans will suffer unimaginable misery and chaos while most other species will simply go extinct. Maybe the best one line description of our current situation I have read is: It may seem impossible to imagine that a technologically advanced society could choose, in essence, to destroy itself, but that is what we are now in the process of doing. That's the final sentence in Elizabeth Kolbert's fine glob ... |

| NASA's James Hansen has weighed in (PDF) to ... ... expose the recent nonsense that has appeared in the blogosphere, to the effect that recent cooling has wiped out global warming of the past century, and the Earth may be headed into an ice age. On the contrary, these misleaders have foolishly (or devilishly) fixated on a natural fluctuation that will soon disappear. As Hansen explains: Weather fluctuations or 'noise' have a noticeable effect even on mo ... |

California waiver update

David Roberts |
04 Mar 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Earlier this year I wrote about a new (EPA-sponsored) study showing that increased CO2 in the atmosphere is directly correlated with increased ozone, particulates, and carcinogens in the air. Since California suffers disproportionately from those traditional air pollutants, it follows that California does have "extraordinary and compelling conditions" in the face of climate change, and the EPA's decision to deny Cali's waiver was bogus. Now the author of th ... |

| I fully understand why spreaders of climate disinformation have hyped up a (sort-of) cold January as if it somehow provided scientific evidence to support their campaign to undermine the well-established scientific understanding of human-caused climate change. That's their job (literally, in many cases). But I can't understand why the media keep treating such disinformers as if they were a genuine part of the scientific process who deserve free publicity, rather ... |

That is the conclusion of a new paper in Geophysical Research Letters (subs. req'd) co-authored by one of my favorite climate scientists, Ken Caldeira, whose papers always merit attention. It should also be pointed out that those worried about global cooling did not necessarily dispute the fact that carbon ... |
