Media enable denier spin, part one A (sort of) cold January doesn't mean climate stopped warming |
Joseph Romm |
03 Mar 2008 |
Gristmill |
| I fully understand why spreaders of climate disinformation have hyped up a (sort-of) cold January as if it somehow provided scientific evidence to support their campaign to undermine the well-established scientific understanding of human-caused climate change. That's their job (literally, in many cases). But I can't understand why the media keep treating such disinformers as if they were a genuine part of the scientific process who deserve free publicity, rather ... |

Climate skeptic tries to throw cold water on global warming, gets all wet
|
Sir Oolius |
29 Feb 2008 |
Gristmill |
| From an article titled 'Cold Water on 'Global Warming'' (paraphrased): My climate change prediction is that no one outside of our own inner circle of discredited charlatans and industry shills will want to sit around and watch The Great Global Warming Swindle reruns for three straight days, even if it is at the Times Square Marriott. Once my prediction comes true, I can blame it all on the liberal media. |

Flat earth firsters? A celebration of hot air on Broadway |
Frank O'Donnell |
29 Feb 2008 |
Gristmill |
| No, you couldn't make this one up. It's a meeting, starting Sunday, of hundreds of "scientists" and propagandists, convening to denounce the proposition that global warming is real. It's like a gathering of the Flat Earth Society. Or, since this meeting literally is taking place on Broadway, it recalls the great Preston Jones play, The Last Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia, which did run briefly on Broadway. The meeting is under the ae ... |

Crock is as crock does GM's Lutz can think whatever he wants, but the record shows his actions hurt the climate fight |
David Roberts |
26 Feb 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Yesterday, a post on the Wall Street Journal's energy blog discussed the controversy over GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz calling global warming a 'crock of shit.' It said: Some, like Wired and Grist, buy his argument: As long as GM keeps making progress toward electric cars and expanding the role of alternative fuels like ethanol, the auto maker is clearly blazing a new trail. This is a bad misreading of my point, which I probably didn't make very ... |

James Carville vs. his wife Mary Matalin calls global warming 'a largely unscientific hoax' |
Joseph Romm |
22 Feb 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Mary Matalin, conservative operative and wife of liberal operative James Carville, explained on CNN today why conservatives don't like McCain's views on global warming: It's 'a largely unscientific hoax.' Oh, well, then never mind. Her husband takes a different view (duh): 'What we need to do, as a party, is try our best to focus on those two issues, energy independence and global warming, above the other environmental and energy issues out there.' So to him, glob ... |

Lutz strikes back GM exec defends calling climate change a 'crock of shit' |
David Roberts |
22 Feb 2008 |
Gristmill |
| A couple weeks back, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, at a roundtable with reporters, casually mentioned that he thinks global warming is a "crock of shit." (His point was that it makes sense to develop an all-electric vehicle either way.) Lots and lots of people, mainly bloggers, got in a huge uproar about it. Yesterday, Lutz wrote a defiant post on GM's blog addressing the controversy. His point is that it doesn't matter a bit what his personal beliefs are; wha ... |

News |
| Posted at 1:49 PM on 22 Feb 2008 If climate change is a "largely unscientific hoax" and "political concoction" (in the words of Republican strategist Mary Matalin), it's a hoax and concoction that could threaten the rights of millions of people. Or so said the United Nations deputy high commissioner for human rights this week. "Ultimately climate change may affect the very right t ... |

Hey Man, That Ain't Cool There was no consensus about global cooling in the '70s, says study |
|
21 Feb 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 4:30 PM on 21 Feb 2008 The scientific consensus in the 1970s about "global cooling" is a beloved argument of global-warming skeptics -- and little more, says a survey of scientific literature between 1965 and 1979. During that time period, seven peer-reviewed articles supported global cooling, while 44 predicted global warming. "There was no scientific consensus in the 1970s tha ... |

Hurricanes and global warming Revisiting the climate-science funding question |
Andrew Dessler |
06 Feb 2008 |
Gristmill |
| In the public climate change debate, one often hears the argument that scientists are making hysterical claims about climate change in order to get funding. I already blogged about how the argument fails the 'common sense' test, but I think this issue deserves another post. Kerry Emanual and Chris Landsea, two of the major players in the debate over the connection between climate change and hurricanes, have visited A&M in the last three weeks and both gave se ... |

Andrew Dessler |
25 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| The American Geophysical Union, a scientific organization with over 50,000 members, mostly earth scientists, just released a position statement on climate change. It is a strong endorsement of the mainstream view of climate science, as articulated by the IPCC reports: the Earth is warming, humans are to blame for most of the recent warming, and future warming may be disastrous. While this is a strong statement by itself, its true strength comes when you con ... |

The solar distraction Climate skeptics blame the sun for global warming |
Andrew Dessler |
24 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Global warming skeptics everywhere are jumping on the solar bandwagon: 'It's not greenhouse gases, it's the sun! Let's burn some coal to celebrate!' There are, of course, many, many problems with the solar theory as an explanation for recent warming. To me, the most damning is that the correlation has failed in the last few decades. As highlighted in an interesting news item in this week's Science: [Courtillot] and his team acknowledge that 'anomalous warming ... |

Unstoppable disinformation every 15 minutes from Fred Singer Climate denier contradicts self, facts, remains famous |

| So Kansas state House member Larry Powell has sent a copy of Fred Singer's lame denier treatise, Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years, to every Kansas legislator. Of course, he sent one to Governor Sebelius, who denied a permit for two large coal-fired power plants in his home county. Since I've been blogging regularly on Kansas, Kansas reporter Sarah Kessinger called me Friday for my opinion on Singer's book and what legislators should do to become inform ... |

The 'Inhofe 400' Skeptic of the Day Today: George Waldenberger |
Andrew Dessler |
15 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| In previous editions of the 'Inhofe 400,' we found some skeptics who were completely unqualified and others who are qualified but not actually skeptical. Today's 'skeptic' falls into the latter category. He is meteorologist George Waldenberger. In response to his inclusion on the list, George sent an email to Inhofe's staffers that began: Marc, Matthew: Take me off your list of 400 (Prominent) Scientists that dispute Man-Made Global warming claims. ... |

Show me the money! Scientists do not have a financial incentive to settle the climate debate |
Andrew Dessler |
10 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| An argument often heard in the fruitlooposphere* is that the scientific community has financial incentive to push the consensus view that humans are responsible for climate change. The idea is that toeing the consensus line translates into more research funding. There is, of course, never any evidence presented with this argument. Rather, it is presented as 'common sense': 'Well, of course they're just trying to get more funding ...' So let's apply a littl ... |

| Honestly, if anyone tells you 'For nearly a decade now, there has been no global warming' -- as this Boston Globe columnist has -- they simply are not interested in seriously trying to understand and deal with the gravest problem facing humanity. Let's look at the data, from NASA, presented last month (PDF): Through the first 11 months, 2007 is the second warmest ... |

The 'Inhofe 400' Skeptic of the Day Today: Christopher Castro |

| In previous editions of the 'Inhofe 400,' we found one skeptic whose only qualification for being a 'climate expert' was to have written an op-ed and another who argues that climate change must not be happening because God would never allow it. We also found some economists who don't seem to doubt that humans are causing the climate to change. Today's 'skeptic,' Prof. Christopher L. Castro, is a bonafide atmospheric scientist, so he clearly has relevant expe ... |

That blog provides a long list of names of people who disagree with the consensus, and I have no doubt that many on this list are indeed skeptics. The question is: does their opinion matter? Should you revise your views about climate change accordingly? Considering the source, I think we all know the answer to that. To underst ... |
