House creates global warming committee Vote passes easily |
David Roberts |
08 Mar 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Today the House of Representatives voted to create the much-discussed committee on global warming: The U.S. House of Representatives Thursday passed a rule to create a committee that will focus on climate change. On a vote of 228-195, the House approved creation of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) has been pushing for the committee as a way to raise public and lawmaker awareness of climate ... |

| Tom Engelhardt of the indispensable Tom's Dispatch received permission from the editors of the New York Review of Books to reprint an essay by Bill McKibben that appears in the current issue. Dingell meets Gore Gore to testify to Congress |
David Roberts |
03 Feb 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Here's a handy political rule of thumb: don't front on John Dingell. In recent weeks, House Speaker Pelosi moved to create a special committee on global warming chaired by Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.). It won't have subpoena powers, but it will call hearings. It was a shot across Dingell's bow, letting him know he better take global warming seriously. Well, Dingell has just booked Al Gore as the sole testimony before a March 21 joint hearing of his Energy and Commerce ... |

| Perhaps the most rewarding moment I witnessed at Sundance last week, after watching several post-screening Q&A's with Everything's Cool directors and stars, came on my last night in Utah. They'd just finished the film's only screening in Salt Lake City, and the packed house had nearly all stayed for the rap session, armed with questions about the future and what they can do. The theater managers had to ask them to wrap up the Q&A more than once, and even when t ... |

Bright lining Lines that are bright, how we love them |
David Roberts |
17 Jan 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Bill McKibben's Step It Up 2007 campaign (read his dispatches) is trying to rally a bunch of simultaneous protests pushing a single goal: reducing greenhouse-gas emissions by 80% by 2050. This approach -- picking a goal rather than supporting specific legislation -- is known as bright lining, and it's something you're going to hear a lot more about on this site fairly soon (stay tuned!). I'm a big fan. What if we could get every green group to agree on a bright line ... |

| David asked contributors for end-of-year lists. Since I normally focus on conservative assumptions, I thought I'd use it as an excuse to look at future breakthroughs and cost improvements. I was going to weasel by calling these "possibilities," but instead I decided to use the time-tested technique of public psychics: I'll call them predictions, crow over any that come true, and pretend the rest never happened. 1. Is today's warming man-made? Here's why the scientific community thinks so |
Andrew Dessler |

Gristmill |
| This is a 'greatest hit' from my previous blog. It's a topic that comes up all the time, so I think it's worth a reprise. ----- As George Bush said at a recent press conference: 'the globe is warming. The fundamental debate: Is it manmade or natural?' Why does the scientific community think humans are significantly contributing to today's warming? To understand why, first recognize that whenever the climate shifts, there's a reason for it. It does not wande ... |

Bill McKibben: How close to catastrophe? A new essay |
David Roberts |

| What follows is a new essay by Bill McKibben, addressing -- in the context of reviewing five new books -- just how close we are to ecological catastrophe, and what reasons there are for hope. The essay will appear in the Nov. 16 edition of the New York Review of Books. The NYRB editors gave Tom Engelhardt's excellent TomDispatch permission to publish it in advance; he in turn gave me permission to run it here. Thanks to Tom and to the NYRB editors. | If the fossil fuels don't getcha, the genetics will. More on Gore's speech The most noteworthy features |
David Roberts |

| Just to follow up a bit on Amanda's post, it seems to me that there are three particularly newsworthy features of Gore's speech: A "carbon freeze"? I've never even heard of that. But if we took it seriously -- if we really halted, immediately, the growth of our collective GHG emissions -- it would functionally amount to huge cuts. Those new coal-fired power plants in Texas would certainly be off the table. In fact, the coal industry would be forced to sh ... |

Talking Points

| Climate and energy have entered mainstream dialog. They're being discussed on op-ed pages and cable news, by ordinary people around the water cooler (do they still have those?), outside of environmental and policy-wonk circles. Hell, Rory's grandparents bought her a Prius on Gilmore Girls. Or so I hear. This is all to the good: these are extraordinarily important issues, and every concerned citizen should be at least minimally educated about them. Problem is, t ... |

I hesitate to reply, but here goes. People, mainly poor people -- in the U.S., but far more so in developing countries -- are increasingly vulnerable to severe weather: floods, droughts, hurricanes, etc. The reasons have mainly to do with growing population, bad land-us ... |

Adaptation and political context

| The U.S. should be doing more to prepare for changes in the climate that are already inevitable. As many folks have pointed out, even if we completely stopped emitting CO2 tomorrow, the gases already in the atmosphere will yield climate weirdness 30 to 40 years from now. Adaptation -- the term of art for these sorts of adjustments -- is necessary. And it probably doesn't get the attention it should in policy discussions. Nevertheless, I'm leery about discussin ... |

| The other issue that's come up in Pielke-Roberts Mild Disagreement '06 is the relative importance of mitigation vs. adaptation, climate-change wise. A couple of issues need to be distinguished here. First, the substance: According to Roger, the "Kyoto Protocol, as is the FCCC under which it was negotiated, is in fact strongly biased against adaptation." It frames money spent on adaptation as money directly drained from mitigation (which it says would make ... |
