Florida faces unfavorable tide New report calls for climate action, but not everyone's listening |
Miles Grant |

Gristmill |
| With more coastline than any state in the lower 48 and about a tenth of its economy ($65 billion a year) based on tourism, Florida has more to lose than any other state from the threats of global warming. Rising sea levels creep closer to coastal development. Warmer tropics fuel stronger hurricanes. And higher ocean temperatures kill coral and harm fish populations, threatening the state's $4.5 billion sportfishing industry. Plenty of reasons that a report released y ... |

Muddy footprints What a ranking of cities can tell us -- and what it can't |

| There's a big carbon footprint report out yesterday from Brookings. It ranks cities [PDF] according to their per capita carbon emissions. Sort of, anyway. Before I pick on it a little, I guess I should mention that Pacific Northwest cities do exceptionally well. Out of the 100 cities in the analysis, Portland ranks 3rd, Boise is 5th, and Seattle 6th. There's very little difference between them. That's wonderful and all, but the analysis only covers about 50 pe ... |

Bush administration climate report ... at last Overdue federal report acknowledges climate-change realities |
Kate Sheppard |
30 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Under pressure from a court order, the Bush administration put out a new report on climate change yesterday that comes to the conclusion that 'most of the recent global warming is very likely due to human-generated increases in greenhouse gas concentrations.' The report covers familiar (to anyone who's been paying attention) ground -- the impacts of climate change on the environment, economy, and public health. A 1990 law requires that presidents submit a report t ... |

| You know how some wackadoo rightwing group is always touting a new list of scientists who don't believe in global warming? And it always turns out the list is populated with a bunch of random people who either don't know they're on it or don't have the first bit of expertise on the subject? Well, the Union of Concerned Scientists is trying a different tack. They've compiled a list composed of actual Ph.D. climate scientists who have published in peer-reviewed journa ... |

| Environmental Defense Fund is running another ad in support of the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act, this one in Washington, D.C., and other markets around the country. It features a talking, businessman-shaped candle melting while offering a bunch of the tired excuses one hears about why climate legislation is a bad idea. 'Sure, climate change is a problem, but let's not rush into anything,' says melting man. 'Remember: haste makes waste.' Watch the ad: |

| The following is a guest essay from noted climate scientist James Hansen. ----- My recent experience with governors raises a question about whether this is an effective way to communicate about climate change. | Feel like you're just not depressed enough today? Read the last bit of this Dot Earth post: During a break, I asked [Nobel prize-winning atmospheric chemist Dr. F. Sherwood] Rowland two quick questions. The first: Given the nature of the climate and energy challenges, what is his best guess for the peak concentration of carbon dioxide? ... His answer? '1,000 parts per million,' he said. My second question was, what will that look like? 'I have no idea,' D ... |

| Posted at 3:00 PM on 29 May 2008 The White House has begrudgingly admitted that "most of the recent global warming is very likely due to human generated increases in greenhouse gas concentrations." | Previously, I looked at why the permafrost won't be perma for long. Then I looked at whether the potential destruction of the tundra represents the point of no return for the climate, necessitating that we keep atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide below 450 ppm or else risk going to 800 ppm to 1,000 ppm. Here I examine two local amplifying feedbacks that further threaten the permafrost: forests and fires. Reduced snow cover and albedo (reflectivity) in the summ ... |

The cowardly lion McCain to skip another crucial climate vote |

John McCain -- who just weeks ago said of the Climate Security Act, "I hope it will pass, and I hope the entire Congress will join in supporting it and the President of the United States would sign it" -- now says he won't show up to vote on it. He won't vote against it, mind you. Won't go on record. Won't take a stand. He just won't show. 'I have not been there for a number of votes. The same thing happened in the campaign of ... |

| Last week, I picked up a copy of the newly reissued 1971 Ursula Le Guin classic The Lathe of Heaven, which takes place in dystopic, post-collapse Portland, Ore., circa 2002 or so. It's typical brilliance from Le Guin, of whom I can't read enough, but I was interested to see that the novel begins by describing Mt. Hood devoid of snow due to the greenhouse effect. The climate is entirely different from that of the 1960s, with blue skies a thing of the past and rainfall pa ... |

I had said it was 15 percent, which was a loophole the size of the Gateway Arch. How big a loophole is 30 percent offsets? Wait and see. I had said the three offsets -- domestic, international, and international forestry -- could make up 15 percent of allowances because the ... |

Now we're finally on the doorstep of Senate action on a comprehensive climate change bill. Floor debate over the Climate Security Act (S. 3036) ... |
