Let the games begin Ragtag youth and ABEC face off in South Carolina |

| Photo: iStockphoto On the eve of the South Carolina Democratic primary, some battles are being fought on stage, and others in the parking lot. This primary season, leading up to arguably the most important presidential election in recent history, has been a circus. Even outside the candidate events, voters waiting in line to cheer Huckabee or Obama might see confederate-flag-jacket-donning Ron Paul supporters espouse southern pride, orange-shirted vol ... |

Coal is the enemy of the human race: Edwards in the debate edition Edwards puts the coal issue into the Dem debate |
David Roberts |
16 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Below the fold, I've put the entire portion of the transcript from last night's Dem debate that deals with climate and energy. It is to the candidates' credit that they took a narrow, stupid question about Yucca Mountain and managed to expand it into a discussion of energy. JMG scolded me for not giving kudos to John Edwards for bringing up the fact that coal is the enemy of the human race. And rightly so: he deserves kudos. This is what he said: I believe we need ... |

Green in sheep's clothing? Pro-warming Romney has sham slam on McCain |
Joseph Romm |
15 Jan 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Think Progress has the whole story, but I'll repeat it here, since, tragically, it may represent the shape of things to come in climate politics for many years, making it hard for Republicans to do the moral thing on climate: Last weekend, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (R) slammed Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for supporting 'radical climate change legislation,' and 'pushing for a massive new energy tax.' Romney is using an anti-environment front group, ... |

| So, McCain made a big deal out of climate change before the New Hampshire primary, sucking up to the state's independents. Now the Republicans are heading to Michigan, where there's an epic fight going on between environmentalists and massive rush of proposed new coal plants. Think McCain will take sides in that struggle? |

DeSmogBlog owes Obama three apologies Obama is in no way 'George Bush Lite' |

| I am a big fan of the climate website, DeSmogBlog. So I was shocked when, the day after his unprecedented victory in Iowa, DeSmogBlog gave Barack Obama 'the inaugural 2007 SmogMaker Award for blowing smoke on global warming.' Gimme a break. How could anyone win that award any year -- let alone in its inaugural year -- when George W. Bush is still president? [Not to mention a year in which Lomborg and Inhofe continue their influential disinformation compaigns!] A ... |

| While I was vacationing, the Guardian's Comment Is Free site ran two pieces by yours truly, one assessing the climate issue as it manifests in the Democratic presidential field, the other doing the same for the Republican field. Check 'em out. (I continue to be mystified by the extraordinarily high level of fruitcakery in the comments over there.) UPDATE: I see that SolveClimate just made roughly the same point, and via them, AEI's Ken Green did the same. At least ... |

Is the competence of CBS News overblown? Presidential candidates answer dumb question about global warming |
David Roberts |
11 Dec 2007 |
Gristmill |
| I have complained a number of times -- even on CNN! -- that the mainstream political press is ignoring the issue of global warming, particularly in the context of the presidential race. Well, it seems CBS News finally decided it was time to address the issue, as part of its "Primary Questions" series, which asks 10 questions of each of the candidates. What question did they choose? "Is the global warming threat overblown?" Oh. My. God. Will you ... |

Coal lover to skip climate forum Rudy Giuliani's ties to dirty energy and efforts to kill the Senate energy bill |

Gristmill |
| You might recall that a while back there was talk of a(nother) presidential forum on climate and energy, to be convened by Al Gore and Arnold Schwarzenegger in New Hampshire, involving all the candidates from both parties. Surely given the location, the subject, and the star power, no candidate could say no, right? Well, turns out it's not happening. Why? Because of the Republicans, only McCain agreed to attend. Giuliani didn't even return their calls. In other news ... |

| The difficulty with assessing candidates by how they address climate change is that policy statements and tailored speeches give little insight into the relative importance each candidate places on global warming as compared to other issues. It is particularly difficult to distinguish between Democratic candidates, who employ an almost identical language of urgency when addressing environmentalists. Tom Harkin, senior Senator from Iowa, hosts an annual barbecue. T ... |

| There was -- see if this sounds familiar -- almost nothing about climate or energy in the recent Democratic primary debate hosted by NPR. There was one intriguing tidbit at the end, however, triggered off this question from a listener: Mr. JAMES IRWIN: What do you think the toughest choice you have left to make is? Is it gay marriage, immigration, the war in Iraq? What haven't you made up your mind on yet? And why haven't you? Clinton, Gravel, Dodd, Edwards, an ... |

| How ambitious should the next president be in tackling global warming? A document issued today by a team at the University of Colorado indicates that No. 44 can be, and should be, far more aggressive than any of the candidates has promised so far. The Presidential Climate Action Project -- a two-year effort headquartered at the university -- has released a presidential action agenda that contains more than 300 specific changes in federal policies, programs and sta ... |

| Unless the Democrats manage to blow the '08 elections, or some other calamity strikes, a president who is ready to seriously confront the climate crisis will be sworn into office in January 2009. Following in the footsteps of other Democratic candidates, Joe Biden unveiled his climate and energy plan on November 20, 2007. Biden's plan looks a little bit generic compared with the offerings we've seen from Edwards, Dodd, Richardson, Obama, and most recently, Hillary C ... |

| A couple nights ago I spoke briefly and rather aimlessly at the first Seattle EcoTuesday. I mentioned that the leading Democratic candidates all have detailed, creditable climate and energy plans, and the leading Republican candidates don't. Afterward, a guy pulled me aside to scold me for "making it a political issue." It's something I hear a lot, and I remain utterly baffled by it. The assumption seems to be that politics is bad and that the ideal state w ... |

It seems ungrateful to ask them for more. But ask we must. We need to know what they'll do to act quickly. ... |

| The Grist presidential forum on climate and energy went off without a hitch and was a huge success. I'll have much more to say about it tomorrow, but for now I just want to thank, again, all the groups that worked to bring it together, the wonder-working production crew at the venue, and the candidates who participated. As for me, the adrenaline from the event has worn off, but the subsequent alcohol intake has not, so I believe I'll go to bed. More later. |

| I suppose no one should be shocked that Fox had a five-against-one (Greenpeace's John Passacantando) panel to savage Hillary Clinton's terrific climate and energy plan. The video is worth watching to see just how much some conservatives hate the strategies that are crucial to avoiding catastrophic global warming: I was surprised to see that Wayne Rogers of M*A*S*H fame has morphed into another Fox wacko.
