| The U. of Arizona put together an impressive seminar series on climate change this past fall. There were seven talks by different U of A professors, covering almost all important aspects of the 'climate change problem.' The talks are now online. I have a video iPod, and I downloaded the seminars and watched them during my recent trip to the AGU meeting. It's a worthwhile way to pass a 4-hour plane trip. If you want to learn more about climate change, I recommend yo ... |

Where can you find the "truth" about global warming? It ain't a Senate website |

| I listened with great interest to the audio recording of the SEJ panel discussion described in David Roberts' recent blog post. Much of the argument there can be distilled down to one simple question: Where can I find credible answers to scientific questions about climate change? Here's the scientific community's answer: look to the peer-reviewed scientific literature. A strong consensus there is the closest thing we have to well-founded knowledge, and it ... |

I Feel Hot and Cold (Can't Explain) On how climate change will affect us |
Umbra Fisk |

Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, My girlfriend asked me the other day why global warming was going to be so bad for her. I just graduated with a degree in environmental science, and I like to think I learned something in my classes, but I still struggled to give her a concise, straightforward answer. I see new research coming out all the time in Daily Grist and other places on the consequences of global warming and pre ... |

A Bit of the Old Ultraviolet On UV ratings |
Umbra Fisk |
14 Oct 2004 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Our radio station provides daily information regarding ultraviolet ratings. I am curious about what these ratings actually represent, and why they change so dramatically. For example, for the past few years, most ratings have been between three and seven. Now we are getting ratings of 10. I doubt the ratings are directly related to Dobson units, which measure the amount of atmospheric ozone present, because they ... |

Leavin' on a Jet Stream On jet streams |

06 Feb 2003 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Why does the jet stream move from west to east? Joe Pittsburgh, Penn. Dearest Joe, To get a decent bagel? Image: NASA. There are actually two main global jet streams, the "polar" in the Northern Hemisphere and the "subtropical" in the Southern Hemisphere. The ridiculously simple answer to your question is that jet streams move west to east because the Earth rotates west to east in its orbit. (It also matters t ... |

Big Plan on Campus Universities combat climate change |

| "Do it in the dark!" That's the rallying cry at Tufts University in Medford, Mass., where an ambitious campaign is under way to cut greenhouse gases. Sure, climate change activism -- conserving energy, using renewable fuels, and constructing eco-friendly buildings -- isn't as sexy as marching against Vietnam or burning bras. But in an increasingly warm world, working to reverse global climate chang ... |
