Project Better Place CPR for the electric car |
Adam Browning |
31 Oct 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Project Better Place has a new take on jumpstarting the electrification of transportation: they've raised $200 million (about enough to buy, what, three fuel cell vehicles?) to start building infrastructure for charging and battery exchange stations. That's just a down payment. If you play Internet Nancy Drew for a sec you will quickly find out that Israel Corp, a major investor, also has a stake in oil refineries, and 45 percent of Chery, the Chinese car company t ... |

Two Become One Major car-sharing companies will merge |
|
31 Oct 2007 |
News |
| Posted at 12:31 PM on 31 Oct 2007 Major car-sharing companies Flexcar and Zipcar announced yesterday that they plan to merge. Zipcar, the larger of the two, has had strong growth mainly in large cities on the East Coast; Flexcar is more widely available on the West Coast. In both schemes, members can reserve a car over the phone or the interwebs, generally at a cheap hourly rate, then return it to its same location. Gas, repairs, parking, and ... |

Here to stay Why I don't agree with James Kunstler about peak oil and the 'end of suburbia' |
Joseph Romm |
29 Oct 2007 |
Gristmill |
| The remarkably low fueling cost of the best current hybrids (like the Toyota Prius) and future plug-in hybrids are major reasons I don't worry as much about peak oil as some do. James Kunstler, for instance, argues in his 2005 book The Long Emergency (see Rolling Stone excerpt here) that after oil production peaks, suburbia 'will become untenable' and 'we will have to say farewell to easy motoring.' In Rolling Stone, Kunstler writes, 'Suburbia will come to be reg ... |

Ad Hawk European Parliament votes to require car ads include warnings on CO2 emissions |
|
29 Oct 2007 |
News |
| Posted at 7:27 AM on 29 Oct 2007 The European Parliament recently voted that car ads must include warnings on vehicle CO2 emissions. If the rule successfully negotiates the rest of the European Union legislative process, 20 percent of a car ad would have to warn or educate consumers about the CO2 emitted from the vehicles advertised, as well as their fuel consumption. The 20 percent rule would apply to overal ... |

URGE2, baby Automakers debate skipping directly to full-electric cars |
David Roberts |
26 Oct 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Ah, finally! The argument surfacing among auto-industry leaders gathering for the Tokyo Motor Show this week is over whether it is time to skip past partial electrification of cars -- represented by gasoline-electric hybrids such as the Toyota Prius -- and push instead to revive the idea of an all-electric car. On one side are Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors Corp. Both have played down all-electric cars in favor of developing gasoline-elec ... |

| My beater has passed 170,000 miles. I couldn't get the key to turn the other day, and the steering column wouldn't lock. Rather than spend a day ripping my car apart, I had it towed to a dealership where I was told it would cost $900 to repair. A spring had broken and the column lock pin had fallen into the key mechanism. I told the mechanic to throw the pin and spring away because I don't care if the column locks, I just don't want it to lock while I'm driving down ... |

The big bet Your chance to get in on the hydrogen action |
Joseph Romm |
22 Oct 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Treehugger reports on a public bet I have made with Greg Blencoe, CEO of Hydrogen Discoveries: Greg Blencoe wins if hydrogen fuel cell vehicles hit 1% of new sales of the typically-defined car and light truck market in the U.S. during 2015 or any year before. Joseph Romm wins if it is 2016 or any year after. At stake is $1000, plus a certain amount of pride (if I lose, I must be photographed wearing a t-shirt saying 'I was wrong about hydrogen.') Congestion Is the cure worse than the disease? |
Clark Williams-Derry |
15 Oct 2007 |
Gristmill |
| The ever-geekalicious Todd Litman of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute had a great take on traffic congestion a few weeks back on Planetizen. As Litman explains, most congestion studies (such as this annual study, which always gets a lot of press) consistently overestimate the costs of congestion. But even using these relatively high estimates, the costs of congestion are pretty modest, compared with the comprehensive costs of owning and operating ... |

Slow your city Like they do it in Italy |
Tom Philpott |
08 Oct 2007 |
Gristmill |
| From Der Spiegel:It's not easy to be punctual for a meeting with Stefano Cimicchi. Parking places are hard to come by in Orvieto, even if cars are still legal. Cars in the city center stick out like a sore thumb among strolling pedestrians, who move to the sides of the streets with studied slowness. After a couple of twisty laps though the narrow medieval alleyways of the old town center, you might find a parking place on the edge of the small Umbrian town -- and pay ha ... |

Debunking Shellenberger & Nordhaus -- Part III What Californians know that Shellenberger & Nordhaus don't |
Joseph Romm |

| 'The kind of technological revolution called for by energy experts typically does not occur via regulatory fiat' claim Shellenberger & Nordhaus. Actually, that is typically the only way it occurs. I defy anyone to name a country that has successfully adopted alternative fuels for vehicles without employing some kind of regulatory mandate. This is also true in the electricity sector. Consider that in terms of electricity consumption, the average Californian gen ... |

| The big story this week was congestion: the Texas Transportation Institute released its annual Urban Mobility Study to the typical fanfare. See, e.g., stories here, here, here, here, here, and here. The headlines, as always, are gloomy: congestion's on the rise just about everywhere, and is wasting our time, gas, and money. The word from the researchers isn't particularly hopeful either. Sure, there are things that can be done to slow the increase in con ... |

Patrick Mazza |

| To bring on the amounts of variable wind and solar energy and plug-in vehicles needed to meet our vast energy challenges, we will need a smart grid capable of managing much more complex power flows. Outside of some progressive exemplars, however, don't expect leadership to come from the utility sector. Instead, changes will be forced by new policies and players, including some you might not expect, like big box retailers. Those were my key takeaways from the stell ... |
