A media boon for Pickens T. Boone Pickens' plan is overexposed and inferior to Gore's |

| It's official: T. Boone is overexposed. His monotonous TV ad runs on an endless loop, he has testified in front of Congress, he is now appearing on every cable show, and everybody quotes him even though he doesn't actually agree with anybody but himself. What specifically bugs me: His ads say we can't drill our way out of this problem, but then he says we should drill everywhere -- offshore, Alaska, your backyard. He keeps pushing his absurd idea of switchin ... |

Memo to T. Boone Pickens His energy plan is half brilliant, half dumb |

| The Phone Call based on a true story Major cable network: What do you think of T. Boone Pickens' latest energy plan? Me: Half of it is great -- the big push on wind power. Heck, even the Bush administration says wind power could be 20 percent of U.S. electricity. But the notion that we would use the wind power to free up natural gas in order to fuel a transition to natural gas vehicles makes no sense. Why would we go to the trouble of switching our vehicle fleet f ... |

| My browser's getting crowded. Time for a link dump! Yes! magazine has an entire issue devoted to climate change. There's tons to see, with good pieces from Bill McKibben and Peter Barnes, but I particularly liked this hopeful rundown of solutions. It's odd that I love reading about solutions but I don't write about them much. Not sure why that is. Remember how the Bush administration spent 7.5 years battling and thwarting binding carbon emissions treaties and then sa ... |

Blocking state leadership on global warming Johnson made a decision that should have belonged to Congress |

| Last week, EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson published the official explanation of his decision to deny a waiver of preemption for California's program to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from vehicles. Robert Sussman, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, has a very good discussion of the misguided reasoning Johnson uses. The bottom line: The role of state programs under a comprehensive climate change framework may be a legitimate subject for deba ... |

Feebate watch California mulls nation's first feebate bill |

| Feebates are one of the most promising strategies for lowering vehicle fleet emissions. This week, the California Assembly will vote on the nation's first feebate bill, the California Clean Car Discount Act. It would levy a fee of up to $2,500 on gas guzzlers, with commensurate rebates for fuel efficient cars. The L.A. Times has some good analysis. Opposition to the bill comes from about where you'd expect -- the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the California Mo ... |

I'm not offering a proper answer to the puzzle proffered above either, unfortunately, but just stating the rarely acknowledged facts: Probably there should be an emissions-free car available for $2,500 (or an organic granola bar for 52 cents), but, at the moment, there isn't. There must be a way to reconcile mass car ... |

| Posted at 2:18 PM on 19 Dec 2007 Hey ladies, wondering how to help fight climate change? It's simple: just stop encouraging men who waste resources! In particular, said U.K. climate scientist David King this week, "stop admiring young men in Ferraris." King's comments were immediately pounced upon -- not by feminists, but by Ferrari owners, who protested that their vehicles spew le ... |

| A couple of weeks ago, I attended a seminar hosted by several departments at the University of Texas on the topic of 'peak oil.' The occasion was the visit of David Sundalow of the Brookings Institution, who is hawking his new book Freedom from Oil. This was mutually convenient for him and the university, which is trying to carve out a position as an optimistic, rolled-up-sleeves, can-do problem-solver in the fields of energy and water. I have no objection to that ... |

Debunking Shellenberger & Nordhaus -- Part III What Californians know that Shellenberger & Nordhaus don't |

| 'The kind of technological revolution called for by energy experts typically does not occur via regulatory fiat' claim Shellenberger & Nordhaus. Actually, that is typically the only way it occurs. I defy anyone to name a country that has successfully adopted alternative fuels for vehicles without employing some kind of regulatory mandate. This is also true in the electricity sector. Consider that in terms of electricity consumption, the average Californian gen ... |

Sass Is in Sessions Judge rules against Big Auto, says states can regulate emissions from cars |

News |
| Posted at 11:11 AM on 12 Sep 2007 States should be allowed to restrict greenhouse-gas emissions from cars, and Big Auto should just deal, a federal judge ruled today. Right now, the only real way to curb the emissions is to improve gas mileage; when Vermont decided to adopt California's strict emissions rules, automakers sued, claiming that the state was illegally regulating fuel economy -- and that ma ... |
