Shifting Into Under-Drive Americans drive less, use less gas, buy fewer cars |
|
14 Aug 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 10:56 AM on 14 Aug 2008 Americans are driving less, burning less gasoline, and buying fewer cars, and the feds have the stats to prove it. New numbers show that Americans drove 4.7 percent less in June 2008 than they did in June 2007, shaving off some 12.2 billion miles. For those keeping track at home, that makes a total 53.2 billion fewer miles driven between Nov. 2007 and June 2008 than in that eight-month ... |

Solid to Liquid Can Be a Gas Crow Tribe strikes $7 billion deal for coal-to-liquids plant on reservation |
|
08 Aug 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 8:41 AM on 08 Aug 2008 The Crow Tribe on Thursday agreed to host a massive new $7 billion coal-to-liquids plant on its reservation land in Montana. The plant would produce about 50,000 barrels a day of diesel fuel when it opens, and eventually up to 125,000 barrels a day. Coal for the plant would come from a yet-to-be-developed mine on nearby Crow land with an estimated 9 billion t ... |

| This is the first in a series on how we can build an energy future based on our best science and no longer critically dependent upon exhaustible and polluting fossil fuels. Lines formed at gas stations during the 1973 OPEC oil embargo. Too often, discussions of our future energy system simply reflect the current array of political forces in Washington or the novelty-hungry attention of the media and not the long-term viability of technologies and proposed sol ... |

A profit without honor ExxonMobil rakes in record cash, spends only 1 percent on alternative energy |

31 Jul 2008 |
Gristmill |
| ExxonMobil broke its own record for the highest quarterly earnings in U.S. history, reporting $11.7 billion in profits for the second quarter. And as ABC reports, the company spent only 1 percent of its profits last year on alternative energy sources. 'They're probably spending more on the advertising than they're actually spending on the actual [alternative-energy] research,' says Bernard Picchi, an economist with Wall Street Access. Shale We Dance? Bush admin proposes low royalty rates in push for U.S. oil-shale development |
|
23 Jul 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 7:43 AM on 23 Jul 2008 The Bush administration proposed rules [PDF] for U.S. oil shale development Tuesday that include charging lower royalty rates for oil-shale production on public lands than it does for other oil and gas drilling. The lower royalties are meant to encourage oil-shale production since, as it turns out, the energy- and pollution-intensive process of cooking rocks before pumpi ... |

Gas at $12-15? Not so fast But soon we will be mad for $6-7 gas |
Joseph Romm |
23 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Normally, I would listen to Robert Hirsch and the legendary Charlie Maxwell, over CNBC's 'Mad' Jim Cramer. But Hirsch and Maxwell are making headlines for saying $12-15 gasoline is around the corner, based on Maxwell's projection of oil 'reaching $180 a barrel in 2015 and $300 a barrel in 2020.' Sorry, guys -- every extra $40 barrel is another dollar a gallon or so at the pump. Don't quite know how they did the math, but they did it wrong. When Mad Money's Jim Cramer ... |

Five bucks a gallon? Goldman says oil 'likely' to hit $150-$200 by 2010 |
Joseph Romm |
08 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Goldman Sachs' Arjun N. Murti said this in a May 5 report: The possibility of $150-$200 per barrel seems increasingly likely over the next 6-24 months, though predicting the ultimate peak in oil prices as well as the remaining duration of the upcycle remains a major uncertainty. That would mean gasoline prices of $5 to $6 a gallon. Unless, of course, we permanently suspend the gasoline tax, in which case gasoline prices would only be $5 to $6 a gallon. Why sho ... |

Straight as a circle Big Oil's crooked talk on profits |

| Has the oil industry borrowed the (laughable) tagline of presidential candidate John McCain? As Fox Business reported last Friday: The American Petroleum Institute took out a full-page ad in USA Today, and other major media were tapped this week to provide 'straight talk on earnings.' The earnings that need 'straight talk': ExxonMobil's $11 billion quarterly profit, and Chevron's $5.2 billion quarterly profit. (Note to Big Oil: When Fox doesn't give your spin fav ... |

When $10.9 billion is just not enough ExxonMobil's profits huge; shares fall anyway |
Josh Dorner |
02 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| You know we're living in strange and perverse times when ExxonMobil can post a $10.9 billion quarterly profit and still fall short of expectations. This past quarter marked the second most profitable quarter ever for the most profitable company in the history of the world -- a 17 percent increase in year-on profits. And like its competitors at BP and Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon managed to increase its profits despite no increase in production. (Funny what happens when ... |

BP-powered no more

| Remember that new environmental blog at The New Republic that was "powered by BP"? Apparently it is no longer thus powered. As gratifying as it is, in a schadenfreudey sort of way, to see that other small media operations can be as dysfunctional as, er, some small media operations I'm familiar with. I'm glad this got settled quickly -- I really do think it will be a blog worth reading. (This post brought to you by Wal-Mart.) |

| I have a new article in Salon on perhaps the most misunderstood subject in energy: peak oil. Here is the short version: We are at or near the peak of cheap conventional oil production. There is no realistic prospect that the conventional oil supply can keep up with current projected demand for much longer, if the industrialized countries don't take strong action to sharply reduce consumption, and if China and India don't take strong action to sharply reduce cons ... |

Survey says ... environment and economy not mutually exclusive! Americans favor conservation and see economically sound opportunities in protection |

| Standard survey questions often uphold (or manufacture) false dichotomies. Case in point: the perpetual practice of pitting the environment against the economy. Nonetheless, these questions can reveal interesting trends over time. And every now and then, the numbers show that the public sees right through 'either/or' questions that just don't add up -- like recent research that shows Americans link economic opportunity to environmental protection. First, recent trends ... |

Crude oil at $130 this year? And $150 next year? Rising cost of oil pushes value of the dollar down |
