| He Shoots Horses, Doesn't He? Trophy-hunting enthusiast appointed to head Fish and Wildlife Service Nothing gives one an appreciation for the challenges facing endangered species like, uh, hunting and killing said species. With that verity in mind, the Bush administration has appointed Matthew Hogan as interim head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Director Steve Williams resigned earlier this month) ... |

PETA and getting your message Out There

| I was going to leave this as a comment on Katharine's post, but I run this joint, so why not take advantage? I used to completely agree with Katharine (and commenter Mike) that tactics like PETA's are counter-productive. In fact, I once wrote a post on it. Why do they always make the most extreme statement (wearing fur is like being a Nazi) and champion the most obscure causes (fish have feelings)? Don't they have enough legitimate, mainstream issues -- lik ... |

| Not long ago, PETA launched a 'Fish Empathy' project. Which I'll do my very best to treat seriously here ... just for the halibut. Citing research that shows fish communicate, feel pain, store memories, and even tend gardens, PETA is trying to convince anglers to quit. In January, after former President Carter chatted on the Tonight Show about hooking himself in the face, PETA wrote him a note: now you know how a fish feels. More recently, the organization asked Mai ... |

If you're planning to carve one up for tomorrow's Thanksgiving meal, you're riding the latest wave of eco-chic. Organic turkey sales at Whole Foods Market have doubled this year, the upscale natural-foods chain reports. And that's building on i ... |

| Do you ever feel a slight twinge of guilt when digging into a plate of baked salmon, envisioning the poor fish frolicking with its family and thinking deep thoughts? Yeah, me neither. But PETA hopes to change that. Their 'Fishing Empathy' (seriously) campaign kicked off yesterday. It's built around convincing folks that fish are more intelligent than we thought (based on several recent studies). 'No one would ever put a hook through a dog's or cat's mouth. Once pe ... |

Oh, the Humanity
|
|
04 Jun 2003 |
Daily Grist |
| Oh, the Humanity Before they can be put on the market, pesticides are usually tested for safety on animals. Government regulators then establish an exposure level for humans that is 10 times more conservative than the safety level for animals. In an effort to abolish the tenfold safety net, pesticide companies frequently sponsor clinical tests on volunteers to try to prove that their products are as ... |

Terror Alert Level: Green

14 Feb 2003 |
Daily Grist |
| Terror Alert Level: Green New York City is on high terrorist alert. The entire nation is on tenterhooks. And at California State University at Fresno, security was heavy -- for an academic environmental conference. The reason? The conference addressed "revolutionary environmentalism" and participants included former members of militant environmental and animal-rights organizations that have been link ... |

Blair Switch Project

24 May 2002 |
Daily Grist |
| Blair Switch Project In what some observers saw as a thinly-veiled attack on environmentalists and animal-rights activists, British Prime Minister Tony Blair warned that his nation risked being overtaken by other countries if it let public sentiment and vocal protesters stand in the way of scientific progress. Speaking yesterday to the Royal Society in London, Blair said Great Britain's economic future was jeopardized ... |

| Stranger in a Familiar Land If politics makes for strange bedfellows, sometimes it makes for strange enemies as well: Tensions are brewing between environmentalists and animal-rights activists over federal efforts to establish the health effects of industrial chemicals and pesticides by testing them on laboratory animals. Under pressure from environmentalists, who were concerned ... |

Furious George

Daily Grist |
| Furious George A two-and-a-half year escalation of acts of so-called eco-terrorism began to slow down last summer -- but inquiries into the acts have sped up, as federal lawmakers have used Sept. 11 as a reason to go after eco-terrorists with unprecedented energy. Last month, you could have been forgiven for confusing a congressional hearing on eco-terrorism with one on Al Qaeda. Speaking of organizations like the Ani ... |

According to the FBI, the two organizations have perpetrated a total of 600 attacks since 1996 costing $43 million in damage. The bureau acknowledged, however, that no one ... |

McChicken Run Consumers have the power to fight factory farms |
Donella H. Meadows |

Global Citizen |
| According to the rules of the World Trade Organization, governments cannot block the import of a product on the basis of how it is produced. So what if a rainforest has been cut down or a stream polluted or an animal tortured or workers paid pitiful wages? That's the concern of the producing country, not the consuming one. Consumers should care only that they get what they want as cheaply as possible. ... |
