| Adam Ravetch gets up close and personal with his subject. Photo: Arctic Bear Productions After the surprise success of March of the Penguins in 2005 -- a film about, well, penguins ... marching -- it's pretty clear that people like movies about cute animals in cold places. So it's no surprise that National Geographic Films, the company behind Penguins, is back this summer with a new movie documenting the ... |

| PETA has announced this year's winners of their annual 'Sexiest Vegetarian' contest. This year's hottest plant-eaters? Tonight Show band leader Kevin Eubanks and American Idol-crooner-turned Grammy-winner Carrie Underwood (who won in 2005 as well, but dropped to runner-up last year). This year's runners up include our favorite babe teenage sleuth Kristen Bell (who knocked Underwood from the top spot last year), Spider-Man 3's Bryce Dallas Howard, the studly Joaqui ... |

| Let's Balk About Sex Eastern Pacific gray whales, tired and hungry, are breeding less Researchers say the gray whales of the eastern Pacific are in deep trouble, and their fate could be an indicator of ocean health. According to Earthwatch, whales migrating from their feeding grounds north of Seattle to breeding grounds off the Mexican coast are arriving scrawny, malnourished, exhausted, and -- how to ... |

This short, simple, balanced article from MSNBC is a timely rehash of this annual controversy. Because sustainability is ostensibly the main goal of environmentalism, it's difficult to criticize the Canadian seal harvest, because it appears to be a classic case of a sustainably harvested natural resource ... |

Is humane meat better for the environment?

Jason D Scorse |
26 Mar 2007 |
Gristmill |
| According to this NYT article, one of the country's biggest restaurant moguls has decided that he will only sell humanely treated animals in all of his restaurants. This is, in one sense, a great victory. But I fear that there may be unintended consequences. Humane meat is likely to be nearly as environmentally intensive and inefficient as factory-farm raised meat (requiring much more water, energy, and producing much more CO2 than plant food) so by convincing the ... |

| Hunting is, as this article demonstrates. There will always be tensions between hunters and environmentalists (not that they can't collaborate), but hopefully, the major groups can agree that ending sport hunting of polar bears is something we should do ASAP. |

| The Times reports on cruelty-free fashion today. Not that any of us can afford this stuff. But still. Just saying. It's there. And we're glad of it. But could this bring eco-fashion to the fashion-conscious masses? And could it signal the end of Summer Rayne Oakes' unchallenged hegemony in the sphere of eco-fashion? |

Notice that WWF talks about protecting wild animals independently of whether the ... |

Economics 101: Don't kill whales No demand for Iceland's whale meat |

| Two weeks ago, Iceland announced it would defy the 20-year-old worldwide whaling ban and resume its commercial whale hunt. They sure didn't waste any time! Two whales have already been caught, leaving 37 more kills to go. Iceland claims this decision is all about business, so let's take a look at the business side of what they actually are doing. For those of you who slept through this lesson in high school, I'd like to tell you about a little thing I like to call ... |

Jason D Scorse |

Gristmill |
| Over the past couple of weeks, I have tried to make what is essentially a straightforward case that environmentalism at its core is about respecting life and that separating this from our behavior towards individual living beings doesn't make much sense. Since many environmentalists reject this notion and insist that environmentalism only includes preserving biodiversity and promoting resource sustainability, this suggests that one of the defining elements of environm ... |

| I hope everyone's been following the discussion on animal rights and environmentalism. I continue to be impressed with the decency and thoughtfulness of the community that's gathered here. Frogfish said most of what needed to be said. The unit of analysis for conservationism is population; for animal rights it is the individual. If you ask me, animal rights is morally bankrupt in the absence of environmentalism -- not the other way around. But we should all remem ... |

| Under a previous post on whaling, a commenter pointed out the hypocrisy of those in the environmental movement who oppose whaling while tacitly supporting other forms of animal slaughter no less morally offensive. The commenter made the point that as long as an animal species is being managed sustainably, there is nothing inherently wrong with using that animal, no matter how sentient, in whatever ways we desire. This contention gets at a key weakness in the envir ... |

| I'm an environmentalist, not an animal-rights activist. Sometimes the two labels go hand-in-hand; sometimes they clash. Personally, I place a priority on healthy ecosystems (including the survival of whole species in their native habitat) over an individual animal's right to exist no matter where it may find itself. So from that vantage point, the fracas over Canada's annual seal hunt doesn't seem to me to be an 'environmental' issue, if we're pigeonholing. Seals, as I ... |
