Whereof They Speak On trusting scientists |
Umbra Fisk |

Ask Umbra |
| Hi Umbra, We've had some bizarre weather in New England, and more and more people are wondering if it's due to global warming. On NBC News, they had a 30-year veteran of NOAA state flatly that it's not global warming, it's El Niņo. As a greenie/leftie I got angry, thinking here goes the MSM denying reality again. Isn't the fact that we are seeing the effects of yet another El Niņo indicative of a warming trend? Aren't the weeks ... |

Honeysuckle Prose On burning yard waste |
Umbra Fisk |
24 Jan 2007 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Your recent column seemed to be discussing mostly the burning of trash. What about yard waste? Each year I pull out tons of non-native and invasive honeysuckle. There is far too much to take to a landfill, and it would take years to rot down if left in some kind of compost pile. I know the burn gives off some CO2, but I honestly don't know what else I can do. Does your "prohibition" extend equally to this kin ... |

The Problem of the Root On tree planting |
Umbra Fisk |
22 Jan 2007 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, My wife recently heard a program on NPR where an expert on global warming said that planting trees in the Northern Hemisphere plays a negligible role in fighting global warming, while playing a significant role in the Southern Hemisphere. Do you have any light to shed on this? Randy Cunningham, Confused Tree-Hugger Cleveland, Ohio Dearest Randy, Tree hugging has no proven deleterious effect on climate change. What yo ... |

Logging On On which wood to burn |
Umbra Fisk |
17 Jan 2007 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, I live in Maine, land of many loggers. My home is heated by an oil furnace, and I try to keep the temps down with thermostat timers to use as little oil as possible. I supplement my heat with a wood stove, as many Mainers do, and in my travels I have noticed a big variation in how much smoke is coming through chimneys and stovepipes. Is there a better type of seasoned wood to burn as far as reducing pollutants? Wendy H. Free ... |

10 Jan 2007 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, You mentioned in "Kid Commando" that the "disposable vs. reusable diaper fight is in a stalemate for the foreseeable future." Is the same true for sanitary napkins? Clara Yuan Ithaca, N.Y. Dearest Clara, I haven't heard tell of the debate, frankly. I certainly get several "which is better" diaper questions a month, but yours is the first on sanitary napkins in quite a while. Pe ... |

Matching Wits On burning trash |
Umbra Fisk |
08 Jan 2007 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, We recycle and compost as best we can, but we are still left every week with some trash. Up to this point we've dutifully hauled it to the local dump, which then trucks it away to some landfill. My husband has recently discovered that, since we live outside of city limits, we are able to burn our trash. Thus my question -- between a landfill and burning, which is the lesser of two evils? Everything Auld is New Again On New Year's resolutions |
Umbra Fisk |
03 Jan 2007 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dearest Readers, Happy New Year! Welcome to 2007. Who knows what it will hold for us all. I hope you have a few parts of your year planned and have resolved to leave the rest up to chance, fate, and short-term impulses. As has become my tradition, I shall start the year with a few resolutions of my own. I just revisited my 2006 Grist resolution, which -- as part of a strange condom-related commentary on reduci ... |

A Different Angle On eco-choices |
Umbra Fisk |
20 Dec 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, While I usually love your column, I have to take issue with encouraging people to eat sushi. This is the second "green" site I have seen that proposes the solution to overfishing is to eat different fish. Saying "of course you can continue to eat at sushi restaurants without feeling guilty" amounts to pandering to people who are concerned about environmental problems but are not willing to make meaningful ... |

Wrapper's Delight On wrapping creatively |
Umbra Fisk |
18 Dec 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Due to my procrastinating nature, I once again find myself in the position of having to wrap what seems like hundreds of gifts in wasteful wrapping paper, only to have it torn apart and thrown away the very next day. I'm a proponent of the "reduce, reuse, recycle" philosophy, but during the holidays, wrapping my gifts in the Sunday comics doesn't say "mindful conservationist" so much as it says &q ... |

Presents of Mind On holiday gifts for young folk |

13 Dec 2006 |

| Dear Umbra, I've read Grist's gift guide, but I didn't see very many ideas for youths and young children. On the other hand, I did like the idea of giving The Lorax, which was mentioned in one of your other responses. Tanks for Nothing On the promise of ethanol |
Umbra Fisk |
06 Dec 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Lately I've been struggling with the idea of ethanol as a green fuel. It seems to be getting a lot of attention in the government and media, and it is being touted as the answer to this country's petroleum woes (see GM's "Live Green, Go Yellow" campaign). But from what I've read, ethanol production has and will likely continue to have a negative energy balance and its carbon dioxide emissions are comparab ... |

Wake Up, Little Sushi On sustainable sushi |

| Dear Umbra, My wife and I love sushi, but we're increasingly concerned about sustainable harvesting. Although we treat ourselves to sushi only once or twice a month, it adds up, and we can't help but wonder about the impact. | Dear Umbra, I live in New Hampshire, and I am getting ready for the long, cold winter. I try to eat locally, but with no year-round growing season here and such a dense population, most of the food comes from elsewhere. Chilly Screens of Winter On inefficient windows |
Umbra Fisk |
08 Nov 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, I am lucky enough to have a home I really love and food to feed my family and my pets. However, the home has one major energy flaw: it is older and has huge, single-pane window/walls with aluminum frames, in two adjoining rooms. We currently are not able to replace them, and they lose heat rapidly. With this winter being a bit colder, is there anything that you can suggest we do, other than the window upgrades ... |
