| Dear Umbra, Sorry to crowd your inbox, but I just want to thank you for answering my question about paint disposal ... it was very helpful (as always). I'm SO glad you're back from being kidnapped. Umbra Fisk |

Ask Umbra |
| Hi Umbra, I'm surprised that in your column on Christmas trees, you didn't mention the option of living trees, although I know they cannot be subjected to our warm indoor temperatures for very long. Can you discuss the option of living trees, how to treat them indoors, and what to do with them after the holidays? Thanks, Christina Gallegos Treeplanter and Naturalist Seattle, Wash. Editor's Note: Oh, how Umbra would love to answer ... |

Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, We really enjoy the community aspect of trick-or-treating but we don't want to give out candy to the little ones, or toxic plastic Chinese toys. Two hundred kids come to our house every Halloween. How do we keep it green, safe, and economical? Jodi McMillian Charleston, W.Va. Dearest Jodi, Two hundred children? How did you keep it economical last year? Let's see, if you were to buy a bag of mini Snickers with 70 in the bag, a ... |

Everything Auld is New Again On New Year's resolutions |

03 Jan 2007 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dearest Readers, Happy New Year! Welcome to 2007. Who knows what it will hold for us all. I hope you have a few parts of your year planned and have resolved to leave the rest up to chance, fate, and short-term impulses. As has become my tradition, I shall start the year with a few resolutions of my own. I just revisited my 2006 Grist resolution, which -- as part of a strange condom-related commentary on reduci ... |

Wrapper's Delight On wrapping creatively |
Umbra Fisk |
18 Dec 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Due to my procrastinating nature, I once again find myself in the position of having to wrap what seems like hundreds of gifts in wasteful wrapping paper, only to have it torn apart and thrown away the very next day. I'm a proponent of the "reduce, reuse, recycle" philosophy, but during the holidays, wrapping my gifts in the Sunday comics doesn't say "mindful conservationist" so much as it says &q ... |

Presents of Mind On holiday gifts for young folk |
Umbra Fisk |
13 Dec 2006 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, I've read Grist's gift guide, but I didn't see very many ideas for youths and young children. On the other hand, I did like the idea of giving The Lorax, which was mentioned in one of your other responses. Do you have any other eco-friendly gift suggestions for my nieces and nephews for this Christmas? I want to encourage them to appreciate our natural environment, and besides, I figured it couldn't hurt if t ... |

Moving Light Along On LED holiday lights |
Umbra Fisk |
07 Dec 2005 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Suppose I replace all my many old, tangled, not-so-efficient holiday lights with the newer LED lights. These are supposed to be better for the environment. What is the best way to dispose of my old lights? R-M Ottawa, Canada Dearest R-M, The LED lights are indeed better for the environment, and, since I'm frankly running out of winter holiday-related questions (see my previous work on Christmas trees, gift wrap, cand ... |

Wrapture On wrapping paper |
Umbra Fisk |
10 Dec 2002 |
Ask Umbra |
| Dear Umbra, Any suggestions on where to find recycled wrapping paper? I know the real environmental choice is to reuse stuff I have around the house, but sometimes newspaper, etc., just doesn't have the right look. Any ideas where I can find recycled/tree-free wrapping paper for the holiday season? I've been looking around (both online and off) but all I can find is rolls of brown packing paper. I want something a little more festive. Thanks, ... |
