| Posted at 12:53 PM on 24 Jul 2008 The Western Climate Initiative has unveiled a draft proposal for a regional cap-and-trade program that would kick off in 2012. The 11 states and provinces involved -- Arizona, British Columbia, California, Manitoba, Montana, New Mexico, Ontario, Oregon, Quebec, Utah, and Washington -- would impose an as-yet-determined greenhouse-gas emissions limit on industries and utilities, then allow laggards ... |

A prophetic approach to energy efficiency Taking a three-day weekend for the planet |
Eric de Place |

| From the Beehive State, a gratifying way to reduce energy use (and carbon emissions): Taking Fridays off. And it's mandatory. In part to deal with rising gas prices, Utah's republican governor John Huntsman introduced the measure for state employees. The move, of course, instantly reduces commutes by 20 percent. The remaining four work days get longer -- state offices will now stay open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. -- so that the total number of hours worked remains t ... |

News |
| Posted at 3:16 PM on 07 Jul 2008 Starting in August, thousands of Utahns will begin enjoying mandatory three-day weekends. Some 17,000 government employees will switch to a compressed workweek -- four days a week, 10 hours a day -- as the state undergoes a yearlong experiment aimed at reducing energy and fuel costs as well as greenhouse-gas emissions. While employees of various U.S. counties and cities mandate a shortened week, ... |

| Mining accidents and deaths cause a flurry of press coverage and then fade into our collective memory. But for a moment, let's think back to those horrific weeks last year as we waited to find out the fate of the trapped miners in Crandall Canyon ... only to be bitterly disappointed. Now look: The general manager and possibly other senior staff at the Crandall Canyon Mine near Huntington, Utah, where 9 miners died in August 2007, hid information from federal mini ... |

Neva-duh Cheaper to power Nevada with renewables than coal, says consultancy |
|
26 Nov 2007 |
News |
| Posted at 2:57 PM on 26 Nov 2007 Nevada will end up with costlier power if it goes ahead with plans to build three new coal plants instead of relying on renewables, says a study from an independent economic consultancy. Higher construction costs and an inevitable tax on emissions will drive up costs of the black rock in the not-so-long run, according to ECONorthwest. The conclusions will surely get the thumbs up from d ... |

EPA to Supreme Court: Take a hike! EPA gives permit to new Utah coal plant; Waxman cries foul |
Brian Beutler |
19 Sep 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Given the opportunity last month to adhere to the Supreme Court's findings in the case of Massachusetts vs. EPA, the EPA chose instead to completely ignore the ruling and proceed as if the case had never been heard. It issued a permit to Deseret Power to construct a 110-megawatt coal-fired power unit at an existing power plant in Uintah County, Utah. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, today sent a letter t ... |

Catching up Experts to Utah: Climate change is real |

| If this happened any place else but Utah, it might not be worth noting, but in that state I believe it's progress: A state blue ribbon task force on climate change stated emphatically Monday that humans are to blame for global warming and offered a slate of recommendations on ways Utah can fight the changes. Glad that's settled! This is somewhat surprising: But one much-discussed option, developing nuclear power, was only on the B list of recommendations by ... |

| Rocky Anderson is in the news again, reminding us why we all love him. Now he's taking on idling autos, calling for city-owned vehicles and personal vehicles on city business to limit their idling to five minutes, except in emergency situations. Fifty percent of air pollution in Utah comes from cars and trucks, and Rocky wants the city to do their part in cutting down on the smog-creating emissions. His environmental adviser, Jordan Gates, says this latest executi ... |

| It's no secret that we have something of a organization-wide crush on crusading Salt Lake City mayor Rocky Anderson. As he mentioned in our interview, his plan has been to leave politics and move into advocacy behind environmental and human rights causes. But it looks like he might be reconsidering. You see, the slate of candidates for Salt Lake mayor is pretty grim. The one truly progressive candidate, the one Rocky endorsed, may not advance beyond the primary. If h ... |
