| Cape Wind claims to have cleared another hurdle today. From their press release: Today's Department of Defense (DOD) report is good news for Cape Wind. The report clearly finds Cape Wind to be outside of the wind-turbine offset zone being proposed for PAVE PAWS radar systems. Now the DOD has reached the same determination as the U.S. Air Force -- that Cape Wind will not negatively impact the Air Force PAVE PAWS radar system. This report puts to rest in a final for ... |

| Or They Could Stop Waging War Report says U.S. military needs to wean itself from oil A report commissioned by the Pentagon says the U.S. military needs to break its oil addiction. The country used an average of 16 gallons of fuel per soldier per day in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2006, compared to four per soldier per day in the Persian Gulf War and one per soldier per day during World War II. The increase is attributed to cut ... |

Agent Orange is a defoliant that contains TCDD, the most dangerous form of dioxin, which causes cancer, immune system malfunction, and birth defects. The U.S. sprayed millions of gallo ... |

| United States military forces bombed the Amazon rainforest today, Pentagon officials said. The predawn assault targeted key habitats of several crucial wildlife species, thought to have been dug in for many years. "Parrots hate freedom," President Bush said in a press conference shortly after the first squadron of B-2s left a base in San Paolo. "We will locate those evildoers a ... |

| Anti-air Force? In yet another environmental compromise made in the wake of last month's terrorist attacks, the U.S. EPA has backed off from pressuring the Air Force to eliminate the use of the gas Halon in its fighter planes. Although Halon is banned for most purposes because it breaks down the ozone layer, the Air Force continues to use it in F-16s, the most popular planes in its arsenal and the biggest emitters of the gas. | I was in New York City on Sept. 11, so recently I've seen a lot of things go up in smoke. First there were the airplanes, careening nose-first into the World Trade Center towers and -- it seemed almost uncanny at the time -- failing to emerge on the other side. Then there were the buildings themselves, billowing abruptly into oblivion. Less spectacularly visible, bu ... |

| Talk about unimaginative. After the radically unconventional attacks on Sept. 11, the United States government strikes back in the most predictable way possible, by bombing Afghanistan from the air. Instead of studying an obsolete military playbook to plan the U.S. response, we might turn to the steady principles of ecology: After all, organisms have been living with eac ... |

| Green Camouflage The Pentagon spends about $5 billion a year on its "environmental security program," trying to reduce the environmental impact of the armed services. But many greenies think that's not enough, and up until the terrorist attacks, the military was facing growing pressure to take the environment more seriously. A proposal in Congress would require the mi ... |
