Update on House energy bill sausage making Mixed news |
David Roberts |

Gristmill |
| Now that the energy bill has gotten through the Senate, the fight has moved to the House. Here's an update, from my rapidly dwindling free-trial-period subscription to CongressNow: An expected push by House Democratic lawmakers to raise federal fuel economy standards and create new renewable electricity mandates will likely be deferred until the full House debates comprehensive energy legislation later this year, environmentalists and industry officials said today. ... |

Cleaning house The House of Reps leads the way to a greener capitol |

Gristmill |
| The Hill's alive with the sound of greening. Or at least, it should be, as soon as our representatives start following through with their 'Green the Capitol' initiative, the final report on which was released yesterday in Washington, D.C. The report is the result of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's call for an energy audit of the Capitol complex four months ago, right after she first assumed her new post. Yesterday's report presents the findings of the audi ... |

Has 'carbon tax' entered the world of the possible? Dingell floats it; Boucher knocks it down |
David Roberts |
21 Jun 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Hmm? What's all this now? John Dingell is floating the possibility of a carbon tax? From CongressNow (sub. rqd.): Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Va.), who will play a key role in crafting the House version of comprehensive climate change legislation, on Wednesday night downplayed speculation that the House bill could include some form of a tax on carbon dioxide emissions. Boucher, who chairs the House Energy and Commerce energy and air quality subcommittee, last night said ... |

Dingell and Boucher back off worst elements of Energy Committee proposal Chalk up a win for Pelosi |
David Roberts |
18 Jun 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Well hey, look at that! No sooner do I write a post on the horrible legislative proposal out of Dingell's Energy Committee than I find out that Pelosi has more or less beat it back. A memo Dingell sent to the committee today (PDF) says that he and Boucher are removing most of the controversial elements: the CTL subsidies, the weak fuel-economy standards, and perhaps most significantly, the preemption of state (read: California) tailpipe air quality standards. The me ... |

| Hi! I'm back. And -- if you'll indulge me in a little whining -- I'm sick as a dog, woefully behind on the news, buried under work, and just generally frazzled and bedraggled and haggard. And what's with time zones? They're stupid. Woe is me, I tell you. I wanted to do a quick post about my D.C. trip, though, which was a blast. Of course the party was great. Somebody (me?) will probably do a separate post about that later. But aside from that, I ran around town meet ... |

They send letters
|
David Roberts |
21 May 2007 |

| Recently, 15 House committee chairs sent a letter to the president to tell him to stop trying to water down the G8 statement on climate change. Meanwhile, chair Brad Miller from the House Science Committee sent a letter to Exxon to tell it to stop funding climate denialists. You can read both letters here. As both the president and Exxon have proven themselves open to rational persuasion, the problems should be cleared up now. Next! |

| No More Dicking Around House approves long-delayed Wild Sky Wilderness bill After five years of delay, the House has passed a bill creating a 167-square-mile Wild Sky Wilderness area in northern Washington state. The bill had been approved by the Senate three times in recent years, but stalled out each time in the Republican-led House, with former California Rep. Richard P ... |

House creates global warming committee Vote passes easily |
David Roberts |
08 Mar 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Today the House of Representatives voted to create the much-discussed committee on global warming: The U.S. House of Representatives Thursday passed a rule to create a committee that will focus on climate change. On a vote of 228-195, the House approved creation of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) has been pushing for the committee as a way to raise public and lawmaker awareness of climate ... |

Dingell meets Gore Gore to testify to Congress |
David Roberts |
03 Feb 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Here's a handy political rule of thumb: don't front on John Dingell. In recent weeks, House Speaker Pelosi moved to create a special committee on global warming chaired by Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.). It won't have subpoena powers, but it will call hearings. It was a shot across Dingell's bow, letting him know he better take global warming seriously. Well, Dingell has just booked Al Gore as the sole testimony before a March 21 joint hearing of his Energy and Commerce ... |

| Chris Mooney has a good catch today: Senators Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and Harry Reid (D-Nev.) have asked the GAO, the investigative arm of Congress, to determine whether recently-resigned Bush administration official Philip Cooney violated federal statutes against obstruction of Congress and false statements. Cooney, as you may recall, is the former oil industry lobbyist, turned chief of staff of the White House Council on Environmental Quality who edited research rep ... |

Is That a Lawmaker in Your Pocket, or ... ? A breakdown of the Senate vote to end debate on the energy bill |
|
21 Nov 2003 |
Muckraker |
| A massive energy bill backed by the Bush administration stalled out in the Senate this morning, when its supporters failed to garner the necessary 60 votes to end debate on the legislation. Only 57 senators voted to halt debate; 40 voted to keep it going. Those in favor of the bill, which has already been passed by the House, say it would increase and diversify energy sources a ... |

Is That a Lawmaker in Your Pocket, or ... ? A breakdown of the Arctic Refuge vote in the Senate |
|
18 Apr 2002 |
Muckraker |
| The Senate today effectively voted down Amendment 3132, which would have allowed oil and gas drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. "Effectively," because the issue never actually came up for debate: The Democrats filibustered, and drilling advocates fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed to break the blocking tactic and force passage of the measure. All but five Dem ... |

| Despite a stern tongue lashing from the New York Times editorial page on Monday, the Senate version of the Interior appropriations bill continues to provide a comfy roosting spot for a handful of anti-environmental riders. Some of the offending items got sliced off when the Senate reinstated Rule 16, the sensible old regulation requiring that senators refrain from attaching non-germane legislative items to must-pass spending bills. (Perish the thou ... |
